However, I am concerned we will continue with business as usual where we identify student problems and/or create solutions without student input. Without student input we could identify problems that aren’t really problems for students or create solutions that won’t work for them. 

For example, in the last All Staff meeting someone asked why we didn’t have dorms on our campuses since housing was an issue and the room seemed to be  in agreement. However, if we’re going to be truly student-centered we need to find out what are the underlying housing issues for students. Is it affordability, proximity to campus, access to reliable and convenient public transportation, a combination of things, or something else? Once we truly understand the issue, we can then create various solutions and bring them to students to determine if students feel the solutions would work. Using the dorm example again, we could build dorms and then students don’t use them for a variety of reasons we didn’t consider without student input—they don’t want to live on campus, the dorms are too small for their families, or something else. I just want to make sure we don’t forget the students when we try to solve issues that create barriers for student success.
