In 1500s Europeans started founding colonies for exploration, for conquest and as permanent colonies.
They encountered Indian peoples.
The explorers sought gold, goods for trade and commerce and sought better   trade routes.
The Spanish and Portuguese created a colonial empire in Latin America.
In the 17th century religious conflicts were so violent that many English people left England for America. In 1620 a ship called The Mayflower brought 102 English men, women and children to the east coast of the United States. They were puritans and they left England because of their religion.
The first winter was very cold. The pilgrims did not have enough food and over 50 of them died. In the spring, some Native Americans helped the pilgrims. They showed them how to plant corn. The pilgrims soon had enough food for the next winter. The pilgrims decided to have a feast of thanksgiving in October 1621.
The English who had first used their colonies as bases for conquest, then started planting crops and helped the colonies to become independent and to enjoy self-rule.

In 1800 the population  of the  USA was only 5.5 million

NATIVE AMERICANS AND EARLY  EUROPEAN IMMIGRANTS  

The original people  of America  were “Indians”.
Today we call these people “Native Americans”
From  1493 onwards explorers from Britain,France,Spain,Italy and Portugal started to” discover “ different parts of America .
America got its name  in 1507.
It was named  after the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci,who wrote  about his discoveries there.

MY MAN FRIDAY
I began to speak to him and he listened carefully and repeated the words. “Your name is Friday”, I said slowly. I chose this name because today was, in fact, “Friday” he repeated. I taught him to say “Yes” and “No” and to understand the meaning. I also taught him to call me “Master”.
VISITORS
When Friday looked at the man, he began to laugh and cry.
He  kissed the man and danced with joy.
“My father!” he cried.
Friday and I took care of his father for some days until he seemed well enough to travel. Then he took the boat that his enemies had left behind and set sail for home. 
“Are you sure you do not want to go with him?” I asked Friday.
“No, Master,”was his reply, “I promised I would serve you all my life and so I shall”.
