Jamaica is known for its beautiful nature and wildlife. It is the land of wood and water, a natural wonder of rolling green hills and stunning views. Currently 195 animals are being tracked in Jamaica but more are being found every day. The national bird of Jamaica is The red-billed streamertail. It is a beautiful, multi-colored creature found among flowering plants in closed forests. It’s noted for a long, curved, slender beak. Other noticeable animals in Jamaica are the manatee which is a type of sea lion, the patoo or the barn owl which is a type of bird, sea turtles, crocodiles and mongoose.  Some of the most common plants in Jamaica are “ flame of the woods” which is a red flower, the mango tree, aloe Vera, upland cotton and Chinese hibiscus which is also a flower.

The biggest environmental issues in Jamaica are that costal waters have been polluted by sewage, oil spills, and industrial wastes. Another environmental problem for Jamaica is land erosion and deforestation.

The first Jamaicans were the Taino Indians who settled in Jamaica around 600 AD. They were stone–age peoples who had migrated to Jamaica from the northern coast of South America. Jamaica became a British colony from 1707 and a Crown colony in 1866. The Colony was primarily used for sugarcane production, and experienced many slave rebellions over the course of British rule. Jamaica was granted independence in 1962.
