Shopping used to be such a hassle! But now you can buy anything online with a few clicks. One of the most popular online shopping platforms in the Philippines is Lazada. As one of the country's pioneering online marketplaces, Lazada revolutionized Philippine e-commerce. It launched in 2012 and is the number-one online shopping and selling destination in Southeast Asia - present in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Before Lazada, online shopping was new and had problems such as consumers not trusting payments, slow deliveries, and bad internet. Lazada used advanced technology to make online shopping easy for everyone. To keep and get customers, Lazada offered safe payments, fast deliveries, and a diverse catalogue. Because of Lazada, online shopping was popularized in our country thus increasing competition among stores and making the industry more innovative. It also helped businesses like those that deliver things, handle payments, and do digital marketing. If Lazada never launched, the development of e-commerce in the Philippines would likely have been slower. According to BusinessWorld, technology played a crucial role in Lazada's successful launch. It had features such categories, search tools, a shopping cart, and safe payment methods. Lazada worked with different payment methods such as credit cards, debit cards, bank transfers, and digital wallets. By using tools to understand how customers behaved, what they liked, and what products were trending, the market continues to expand as more consumers are attached to the service it was offering. Lazada also used a technology called cloud computing. This is like renting a computer from someone else, but you can use it from anywhere. It helped Lazada grow quickly and handle more customers.

Lazada does not publicly disclose the exact number of customers it has in the Philippines or worldwide. However, Lazada Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) James Dong said in an interview that “Among countries, the Philippines is already one of the leading ones, market-size wise. It’s above average, for sure. We have a very large population base here. Gross domestic product per capita growth is also high. Internet penetration is still growing. I think the growth speed-wise, it is slightly above average in Southeast Asia, for sure"

So, the next time you hit that "check out" button or use your voucher, be thankful that Lazada was able to use such advanced technologies to grow a big e-commerce empire and offer you services that you can enjoy from the comfort of your home.

Information and Communication Technology, or ICT for short, deals with the use of various communication technologies that have evolved and contributed in many ways throughout the years. It's everywhere—Everyone uses it, even you. Whether it's chatting with friends, researching online, ICT has become necessary in our daily lives.

So, what does this have to do with

Typhoon Yolanda, also known as Typhoon Haiyan in 2013? As we all know, Typhoon Yolanda was one of the most powerful tropical cyclones to hit Southeast Asia. It brought upon great devastation to the Philippines. Houses were destroyed, roads were blocked, families grieved—the list goes on. Yolanda left millions of people in distress, the aftermath was shocking to all.

Typhoon Yolanda was broadcasted everywhere in the Philippines and internationally through television, radio, social media, and because of that many people were warned and were able to prepare. In addition, victims who were left stranded received aid and organizations were able to collaborate and communicate with ease. Evacuation centers were set up in advance. Donations from around the world were made possible because of how widespread the news was. The nation was prepared thanks to the use of various ICT channels. It ensured that no one was left behind.

Furthermore, relatives from afar were able to connect with their loved ones and ask of their well-being. Easing their worry and allowing to gain updates from them. ICT provided comfort and safety through allowing communication.

In the events of the typhoon the power of ICT in bringing people together through times of crisis was demonstrated. Everyone became united and were able to spread news through utilizing ICT. Technology is more than just for entertainment. It can be used in many ways, at the time of disaster ICT was a lifeline to the victims.

Looking back, many were lost but many were also saved because of the easy access of ICT. Since technology is always advancing it would create more ways to communicate and collaborate with people around the globe. It is important to realize and be aware of the abilities ICT is capable of for emergencies like Typhoon Yolanda. ICT isn't just limited to convenience but it is also for survival.

The NDRRMC and ICT's impact on it by Matthew Gener

Think of what it’s like to be able to know the weather before it shows; knowing when a storm is about to hit, even before the tell-tale signs emerge. This is what ICT (Information and Communication Technology) does and makes possible. And when it comes to the NDRRMC, it's one of the core things it uses. Specifically, the ICT4D which is ICT but for development. ICT tools help NDRRMC when it comes to analysing, gathering and processing the data of previous natural disasters. Things like historical disaster data, population, and geospatial data which are crucial things to take into account when it comes to planning on handling natural disasters.

It plays a crucial role in disaster mitigation, management and prediction. It informs everybody within the area of said predicted disaster. And ICT plays a part in this as it supports NDRRMC by creating dependable communication with emergency teams and government units to alert and support the people. And, when it comes to the public, ICT is used to broadcast information. Things like evacuation procedures, updates on the disaster’s situation and evacuation points. Social media platforms to mobile phone alerts are key parts in this, and they’re all done through ICT.

Prior to ICT becoming an integral part of NDRRMC, it was more of a challenge to face when it came to disasters. Although there were efforts, it was harder to obtain data, as they would have to manually collect data. Like: Seismic activity, weather patterns, and the impacts of disasters towards people and environment. This would lead to inaccuracies or delays. Not only that, but the information was disseminated mainly through traditional media (newspapers, television, and radios). As, ICT tools were not as integrated and advanced as they are today, coordination challenges were also an issue. Communication was mainly done through radio or phone, and said disasters could disrupt their signal, which lead to delays in responding. When time is detrimental in a time like that all delays are unpleasant.

Although it maybe underappreciated, as people mainly see ICT as a quality of life advancement— it’s a lifeline for in something like disaster management.

Have you heard about the atrocities occurring in the People's Republic of China, an enormous nation in its own province of Xinjiang? Terrifying things that seem more appropriate for the past than the present? Meet the Uyghurs, a Muslim-majority religious ethnic minority in China.

They have suffered terrible persecution as a result of the CCP's activities, and their narrative deserves the justice it merits for a society where everyone's rights are upheld and freedom reigns.

As part of its campaign against the Uyghurs, the Chinese government has implemented draconian measures meant to eradicate their identity as a cultural and religious group. There have been reports of widespread detentions in "re-education camps" where Uyghurs are subjected to torture, forced labor, and brainwashing.

The Uyghurs go through such maltreatment in the Communist country of China, not only are they being held accountable physically but also mentally. The current Chinese government has taken drastic measures against this ethnic minority especially when it comes to the use of advanced tools of technology that are completely unnecessary and unacceptable for human rights such as multiple tracking systems to keep a hold of them and collect data that are being used unethically against the Uyghur population.

It is devastating to hear that this particular group of individuals who have not only hopes and dreams but a future ahead of them are being crushed by an authoritarian government who does not favor their population for no good reason at all. Their voices and actions to strive for a free society have been heard all around the world by many, as the world is condemning China to this day for their cruel actions against the Uyghurs and they are taking the CCP as the responsible for these unethical practices that have led to the collapse of this Muslim-majority religion in their country.

A long journey may be ahead of us in order to achieve this path of securing justice for these people who are in need. There are many problems to tackle and overcome such as the examples being both diplomatic and geopolitical challenges that might delay such actions that are significant in the process of continuing this fight against the injustices that the Communist regime of China is doing. Our international sector must focus more in this field in order to take action against these violations of human rights against political considerations through a battle for peace.

For a moment in history, we can finally have the chance to expose and set an example of what we must do when it comes to a system that oppresses the less privileged in order to be the voice for the right and the free.

“The Contribution of ICT in search of Alice Guo” - Moira Malana

How evident does technology work for individuals? How useful it can be to determine whether it is worth the effort or inconsistent work? We can basically distinguish it, if we mean to apply the functions of ICT in daily lives or what makes us alive is by working, such as evoking proper justice system and law enforcements.

For an instance, another momentous event that happened in the Philippine politics is the hearing of the former mayor of Bamban, Tarlac, Alice Guo who bought suspicion in the senate due to her nationality, accusing her of spy from the country’s territorial opposition, China. On top of that, she is known for her alleged involvement in illegal activities at Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO) that involves human trafficking and unlicensed gambling. The role of ICT here became chronic and widespread, in order to receive incentives without going through valid procedures. While, the crime rate continuously increases.

We can say that technology could either be good or bad, it depends on how we use it merely to make our lives easier and efficient. Yet, in terms like this when danger approaches, our instinct is to rely and negotiate in technology for our well-being. Not to the point, where we could embark crime and let it flourish.

Lately, alarms then risen when authorities reported that Alice Guo has fled the Philippines illegally and the fact that she left for almost a month in July 28. With the help of Intelligence Sources, she arrived in Malaysia then travelled to Singapore by skipping borders. In this case, we could already visualize how authorities were able to track Alice Guo. It essentially means when it comes to searching wanted people, we would do anything to not let things pass without paying for it.

Basically, every action has consequences and without ICT, we wouldn’t realize how vast we could gather enough information, in order to find the solutions in our problems, such as its sharing of data bases, the work of AI, and surveillance systems.

"COVID-19: How Information Communication Technology Helped." - Jiann Lajom

After 4 years from the start of COVID-19, I believe we can finally look back on how it changed everything about our lives. How students and workers were forced to stay at home and had doctors work overtime to deal with COVID patients. And shutting society down to the barest of necessities for a year or so. So today, I would like to look into how COVID-19 and ICT affected each other specifically.

I think there are three demographics of people involved, The worker/student, the medical professional, and the everyday person. I’d start off with the worker/student. Of course, since they were unable to go to their workplace/schools because of the virus, they were forced to stay at home and resorted to conducting their business/education through the use of online meeting sites (i.e. Zoom, Google Meet, etc.), and education sites for students (i.e. Blackboard, Canva, etc.). While this made things difficult for these people, they were still able to finish their jobs and pursue their education when needed.

Secondly, we have medical professionals. Which is very broad, but can be split into two categories. For frontliners specifically, ICT was able to make the jobs of frontliners easier while they were strained with the treatment of COVID patients. Especially in communicating with their patients in quarantine, and their loved ones back home. While this is the same for practitioners who aren’t necessarily involved with COVID patients, but still need to see their patients but can’t because of the restrictions.

And lastly, we have the regular person, Who are forced to be in their homes because of restrictions. While not as affected as the aforementioned people, ICT was still able to help them by providing them with new things to do while locked down in their homes. And still, be able to fulfill the necessities they needed while doing so. ICT was able to give all of these people the real-time news of the situation happening with not just covid, but everything else happening at that time.

To conclude, I believe that ICT was one of the biggest coping mechanisms and crutches that people had during the pandemic and subsequent lockdown. And were it not to exist, I believe that the events of those two years would have played out differently, and for the worse.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought unexpected challenges during the year 2019 everywhere across the globe, including our country, the Philippines. With this, implementations of strict lockdown restrictions and social distancing were done in order for us people to be safe and the virus to be contained. The impact of these implementations has greatly affected the daily lives of us Filipinos, particularly in the fields of education and work. The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) helped pave its way for us to adapt into new realities and opportunities during the pandemic.

As schools started to close, the traditional face-to-face classes were no longer applicable. And so, this is where the role of ICT enters, enabling the students to switch to online distance learning (ODL), making the learning process to continue as it is for the learners. The Learning Management Systems (LMS) like Google Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams made it possible for the students to continue their learning process through the help of these applications. But, despite the availability of these platforms, the ODL is still limited to those students without the accessibility of internet and devices.

People in the business world were also affected by the pandemic, forcing their businesses to close their operations physically. To ensure the continuity of their operations, businesses in the Philippines had to quickly adapt the same way as the educational institutions had to in order for them to continue their operations through the role of ICT. Just like the educational institutions, businesses had to continue their work through online platforms such as Zoom and Google Meet as a way of their work–this eventually made other businesses have their way in how the work flows as a daily basis.

In addition to this, ICT played a crucial role in paving the way for the Philippines to gain more opportunities in the workforce. Many of us Filipinos took this as an opportunity to be creative and competitive in ways such as online selling, online shopping, and many more to which it became a way to eventually become part of our daily lives.

In conclusion, despite the pandemic's negative impact, this also made the Philippines embrace the digital world where ICT played a huge role in making these opportunities possible. As we face the pandemic, we also faced a lot of challenges that were eventually turned into opportunities. Although things were really challenging at first, these could not be done without the help of ICT.

How can ICT help us to stay safe during the ongoing Monkey-Pox outbreak? Now that the Department of Health announced that a new type of virus is now inside of our country. The question of the people is what kind of virus is Monkey-Pox virus, how can infectious is this disease, and how can we prevent this virus from spreading much further in our country.

Before technology is introduced to our world people only have few ways to get information to what is happening to our sorroundings. People can only get information by the use of Radio, Television, Newspaper, and information from one person to another. But now our world evolved from time to time we now have other ways to get information and news. We use Smartphones, Personal Computers, tablets, Smart T.V., etc. Because also of technology life became far more easier than the old times we get news just from scrolling thru social medias like Facebook. People including myself don't really watch news from Television but I'm still updated to what is happenings just because of many hours of scrolling from social media platform.

Because of our access to technology we now have a general knowledge on Monkey-Pox. We can now browse the web on where does this virus comes from, how can we protect ourselves to fight this infectious disease, and how can someone get this virus and pass this virus to the next person. Because of this information we can now not just help ourselves but also others by being educated about this infectious disease.

To conclude, ICT is very important to us because it makes our life easier because of the useful information we got online just by scrolling but we also must learn to fact check everything we see on the internet.

ICT to COVID pandemic (Christian Ace S. Matti)

The COVID 19 pandemic plunged civilizations across the world in a global health crisis like never before. During this time, information and communications technology (ICT) proved to be a tool that can help adapt to the situation while limiting how much consequences of the virus affect us. In this essay, I am going to discuss the involvement of Information and Communication Technology in response during COVID 19. A major contribution of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) appeared here during this pandemic in order to continue work, study. People and organizations really managed to safely go on with their regular activities regardless of lockdowns, social distancing actions only due to technologies! Businesses were able to function on remote work platforms with least disruption in their activities and productivity. Online learning platforms, for instance, was the saviour who continued to outreach millions of students even when educational institutions were forced to close down. ICT had a role in helping health sector to diagnose and treating and prevention of COVID 19. Through telemedicine platforms, patients and healthcare providers could conduct consultations without the risk of virus transmission while also removing barriers from access care to underserved regions. Owing to the emergence of ICT tools, further developments were observed in surveillance technology detecting virus trends together with hotspots and influencing health policy. ICT was also instrumental, and information on the virus were communicated via media platforms as well reminding them of how they can prevent getting infected with COVID 19CDATA.

Ecosia is a search engine that uses its profits to plant trees. It functions like other search engines but uses its ad revenue to fund tree planting projects around the world. When you use Ecosia for online searches, one search is equal to one planting of trees. Ecosia aims to provide a greener alternative to traditional search engines while contributing to global reforestation efforts.

Ecosia popularized in the Philippines back then in 2022 when global climate change threat was spread rapidly through the internet and stated that we only have 3 to 5 years to save the planet wherein people went on panic mode. To find a solution and contribution to mitigate climate change in the pandemic era, people in the Philippines started deleting unwanted emails and used Ecosia instead of Google.

On March 30 2021 before the popularization of the search engine in the Philippines, Ecosia started planting trees on the said date. Ecosia has teamed up with NTFP-EP Philippines, a group of NGOs and community organizations, along with Samahang Madalagnon na Nagkakaisa (SAMANA) to find places in Panipiason, Aklan where they can plant native trees and wild abaca that are naturally found in the local forest.

Sadly, this climate action trend only lasted for like only 2 months here in the Philippines. Due to the malfunction and errors of the search engine, along with the reason that it takes a lot of time to be able to plant a single tree, most citizens in the Philippines stopped using it.

Causing great disruption to all our educational institutions nationwide. Students, teachers, and facilities were under a great crisis for the meantime. Worrying how education could still progress amidst the ongoing pandemic.

ICT or Information and Communication Technology paved the way for our fellow countrymen to achieve and continue education during the COVID-19 outbreak. The sudden shift to purely online method of teaching and learning was a result of the lockdowns that were imposed by the Philippine government. Schools, teachers, and students were able to connect with each other through virtual interactions. Thus, introducing online classes.

Not only ICT enabled virtual learning, but also furnished online tools and applications which could help and serve as our learning materials.
"Congratulations Carlos Yulo! Digital Marketing in Virality" by Lanna Reyes

Ladies and gentlemen, we won gold! But what does that have to do with marketing? From the fantastic and groundbreaking win of our two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo, We have seen a resurgence of marketing in various corporations to ride the wave of the win. Using the momentum of this historic accomplishment to market their own companies with witty taglines related to the media discourse regarding the win and various viral occurrences related to the gymnast himself. We will explore virality's effect in digital marketing using this Olympic phenomenon.

In this age of the 21st century, we have developed a way of marketing called Digital Marketing. Using the evolution of the World Wide Web, digital marketing uses the social web to pander to the everyday use of technology today. Companies use algorithms, personal data, and current trending topics to decide what to show us on social media platforms. The most recent examples are the various brands that used Carlos Yulo's Olympic win and the viral discourse with his mom, Angelica Yulo, for free marketing. These companies are Mcdonalds, Jollibee, Pizza Hut, Angkas, Hygienix, Tough Mama, Milo, Colgate, etc. The advertisements were made to congratulate our Olympic gymnast and use his newfound fame to their advantage, hence "free marketing." By definition by the American Marketing Association (2017), marketing is the process of creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society. Using a target audience and viral topics increases the chance of widespread PR for the companies. The digital age allows widespread sharing for all who have social media to see, which makes marketing easier if they follow such momentum. The combination of trends, fads, virality, and actual good advertisement creates marketing opportunities, which is evident from the various companies that went viral online because of their advertising.

In conclusion, It is not uncommon for digital marketing to ride viral hits to pander to a target demographic of society. Each generation has fads, trends, and news that they deem groundbreaking and worthy of celebration. Virality will always co-exist with popularity. Therefore, the digital market must adapt to whatever may come and be flexible. The future of the market will rely on technology and how their advertisements will communicate with us as customers. It's up to us if we will allow ourselves to accept their pandering and if we can keep up with technology's ongoing evolution.

Back on May 9, 2010 the presidential election took place. This presidential election was very much anticipated by the people because it would be the first election to use poll automation. The automated election system (AES) was used for the first time countrywide in the Philippines for the 2010 national elections.

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) introduced the AES in an attempt to raise the electoral process's level of accuracy, openness, and effectiveness. With these automated machines, the Filipinos would have to say goodbye to their old-fashioned way of voting and calculating results. The ballots were read and counted by the AES using optical mark recognition (OMR) scanners. Voters' votes were processed fast and precisely using the OMR scanners, which also lessened the possibility of human error.

To sum it up, the 2010 Philippine national elections saw a successful usage of ICT. The elections were made more credible and fair with the assistance of the AES. Additionally, it enhanced public confidence in the political process. This was a huge impact to our history, specially to our people.

"MINE! ICTs’ impact on Filipino Entrepreneurs in the clothing industry" - Jilian Mariz Solis

“Bes, Mine 250!” “Mine Floral!” are some words most Filipinos are familiar with. With the pandemic hovering us all with such negativity; keeping us away from our loved ones, almost rotting in our own homes, and workers having no income at all — it was hell for all of us. With the Filipino's wit and desperation for great entertainment, people have come up with different trends and challenges for enjoyment. And with that, Pinoys had also come up with strategies and things to do to earn income whilst being in a lockdown. One of them is Online Selling.

Though online shopping in our country began way back in 2011, it was not until 2020 that it really took off. Over the past five years, the nation's e-commerce market has grown by about 400 percent, making it the second-fastest-growing e-commerce market worldwide. May it be food or clothing, ICTs or Information and Communication Technologies has brought a positive impact on our Filipino Entrepreneurs. With applications such as Adobe Illustrator, CapCut, and Canva, they can properly and creatively advertise their products. Creating visually appealing content such as videos, photos, and stories— showcasing each piece, while building their brand identity, and engaging with their target audiences.

Along with that, ICTs had help in marketing and brand visibility with different platform Advertisements and influencer marketing to promote their brands. These allow targeted advertising, enabling different entrepreneurs to reach specific consumers more effectively. It also allows Filipino entrepreneurs to reach global markets with ease. E-commerce platforms and digital payment systems have enabled businesses to sell products and services beyond their local boundaries, tapping into new customer bases worldwide.

ICTs have revolutionized the clothing industry for Filipino entrepreneurs, offering numerous opportunities for growth, efficiency, and market expansion. It was able to provide them with tools to enhance design, streamline production, optimize marketing, and reach global markets. Digital platforms have opened up new avenues for e-commerce, enabling businesses to connect directly with customers and grow their brands with minimal overhead costs. Though it can be a big risk, entrepreneurs who strategically use ICTs to balance these opportunities and challenges are more likely to succeed in the dynamic clothing market.

In 1942, the Japanese invaded the Philippines. In 1945, the Philippines was liberated. This time period was one of tragedy, suffering, and oppression. The Japanese committed many war crimes. One well-known event is the Bataan Death March, wherein 76,000 war prisoners were forced to march 66 miles. On the way, they were beaten, shot, starved, and some were even buried alive. Another is the sexual enslavement of over 1,000 Filipino women, many being underage, who were referred to as “comfort women” by the soldiers.

These were times when hope was in shorter supply than food. In an attempt to influence Filipino consciousness, the Japanese set up their own radio station, broadcasting their propaganda. To counter them, the resistance had their own radio stations like the Voice of Freedom, Voice of Juan dela Cruz, and KGEI. They gave reports on the progression of the war and assured the public that the guerillas will continue to fight back against the Japanese invaders.

Most of the stations were short-lived, with some lasting only a few months before the Japanese discovered and executed the announcers. The listeners weren’t spared, either. Anyone caught tuning in would be tortured or killed, yet many still accepted the risk. The stations offered something irreplaceable – hope. People were inspired to keep resisting and supported the resistance.

The Japanese won the Battle of Bataan, but they lost in the battle of propaganda. Though they tried to win over the Filipinos, their public image was damaged beyond repair because of their cruel treatment of the populace.

The Filipino guerrillas fought many disadvantageous battles but still managed to achieve victory, whittling down the military presence of the Japanese. Their efforts helped substantially when General MacArthur returned to the Philippines.

Radio broadcasting is one of the earliest forms of ICT. During wars, propaganda was a powerful tool to get the public’s support. Radios were the most commonly used medium in spreading propaganda. Some notable radio announcers are Tokyo Rose and Axis Sally, who spread defeatist propaganda, greatly diminishing the enemy soldiers’ morale. Technology is wondrous and back then, it even changed how wars were fought.

ICT's Impact in the Philippine People Power Revolution by Chanelle Arizala

In February 1986, the Philippines witnessed an important event that would leave a lasting impact: the People Power Revolution, more commonly referred to as the EDSA Revolution. In a remarkable turn of events, the peaceful uprising led to the removal of former President Ferdinand Marcos and the restoration of democratic rule. The success of this momentous occasion was significantly boosted by the utilization of ICT, with radio broadcasting playing an important role. During the People Power Revolution, radio broadcasts played an important role in bringing people together and energizing the masses.

Radio Veritas, a Catholic radio station, played a vital role in spreading information by delivering timely updates. The broadcasts, which quickly gained popularity and reached a wide audience, served as a powerful catalyst for people from diverse backgrounds to unite at the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Manila. Radio has been widely recognized for its remarkable effectiveness in spreading messages and facilitating coordination. Under Marcos' regime, traditional media channels were tightly controlled and any form of dissent was ruthlessly suppressed. Radio Veritas quickly became a crucial alternative source of information in this ever-changing landscape. The station's broadcasts played an important part in disseminating accurate information, uniting supporters, offering guidance, and uplifting the spirits of the protesters. The success of the People Power Revolution illuminated the tremendous influence of ICT in propelling political and social movements.

The incredible influence of Radio Veritas, despite government censorship, demonstrated the immense potential of technology in challenging dictatorships. In today's time, the revolution has brought to light the crucial role that media independence and freedom of speech play in fostering a healthy and vibrant democracy. Furthermore, the utilization of telephones and other communication tools played a vital role in effectively coordinating the logistical aspects of the protest. Part of our responsibilities involved coordinating transportation and prioritizing the well-being of all participants.

The power of ICT in empowering grassroots movements and fostering collective action was showcased by these technologies. The People Power Revolution is a compelling illustration of how ICT can have a profound impact on political landscapes. The experience highlights the remarkable influence technology can have on society, even in its most basic manifestations. This showcases the potential for individuals to take charge and drive impactful societal transformations. This is an important reminder of the importance of robust and autonomous communication channels in a democratic society. This piece also emphasizes the immense impact that technology can have in addressing social injustices and encouraging political engagement.

The significance of the lessons from the EDSA Revolution remains relevant even in today's digital age. In today's fast-paced society, it is more important than ever to utilize technology to foster transparency, rally individuals, and champion social justice causes. In the ever-changing landscape of technological progress, it is important to remember the enduring values of using ICT to promote democratic governance and social justice. The People Power Revolution exemplifies the immense impact of ICT in driving profound societal change.

In today’s technology savvy world, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) plays an important role. Between texting our peers, relaying information on the television, watching news and announcements, or even just posting pictures on social media to update the events of our life, our generation utilizes ICT.

What few people know, however, was the crucial role ICT played back in 1986. The world was surprised when millions of unarmed Filipinos managed to nonviolently overthrow dictator Ferdinand Marcos, who was then known as “the Hitler of Southeast Asia”. It was called EDSA 1, popularly known as “bloodless revolution” by the world. The revolution began with the assassination Benigno Aquino Jr., the opposition leader against Ferdinand Marcos. Benigno’s wife, Corazon Aquino needed Radio Veritas in order to start the democratic movement.

Information and Communication Technology paved the way as it was a mobile phone that was used to transmit a message from Corazon Aquino to millions of Filipinos, to inform the people of the political advancements and organizations for an unarmed and nonviolent protest. It served as a symbol that aroused the Filipino people to have a revolution.

E-commerce, or the exchange of goods and services over the internet, could arguably be the biggest change to the day-to-day lives of Filipino citizens so far. In recent years, the use of online shopping has greatly influenced consumer culture and shopping habits in the country. As we push forward in becoming a more digitally advanced community, online shopping is another thing in which Filipinos become continually engrossed in.

Applications like Shopee and Lazada have grown increasingly more popular in our current society. These shopping platforms serve as a way for Filipinos to access various goods and services, be it internationally or locally sourced- all from the convenience of their own home. The popularity of this mode of commerce has grown exponentially since the COVID-19 pandemic, granting another level of accessibility in a time where we were all confined within our houses.

These applications enable Filipinos struggling with employment, or those looking to start their own business, to easily establish their own source of income online. With some platforms even providing various webinars and modules on how sellers can cultivate and grow their online presence, and effectively boost their overall sales.

In conclusion, the growth of e-commerce has undoubtedly changed the business and shopping scene for Filipinos. As these online platforms change and evolve, so will technology, accessibility, and innovation.

"How foodpanda Revolutionized the Lives of Filipinos" by Samantha Dizon

Conveniences and efficiency have ceased to be a luxury but an utter need for human beings in modern times today. Foodpanda, an online food delivery platform, has been one of the game-changers in daily life here in the Philippines. It has enabled people to order their favorite food with just a few taps on their smartphones. Foodpanda has brought an impact to Filipino lives in terms of eating, working, and living in the Philippines. Instead of merely having food delivered by pizza chains and other restaurant delivery services, foodpanda opened so many new opportunities for users-from burger fast food up to fine dining restaurant meals. The user-friendly platform, added to the great selection of restaurants on its list, have helped people experience a variety of flavors and dishes within the comfort of their homes. It has soothed many busy professionals, parents, and students who don't have time or energy to cook for themselves after an exhausting day.

But perhaps the most meaningful impact brought about by foodpanda has been its ability to enable small and local businesses. Giving a chance for home-based entrepreneurs and small food stalls a chance to reach a bigger audience sans the actual physical restaurant, during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, many local restaurants were able to keep above water because of it. To many small businesses, entry to the platform is a matter of survival-a lifeline that allows them to continue operations despite lockdowns and restrictions. Foodpanda also opened thousands of jobs across the country. The fleet of riders of the platform, better known as "Ka-Panda" drivers, is an integral part of its success. Hundreds of Filipinos have found flexible jobs in Foodpanda either as full-time riders or as part-time delivery personnel. The flexibility, though, has afforded riders the opportunity to earn an income while balancing other responsibilities like education or family commitments.

The job opportunities are not limited to delivery personnel alone. With the growth of foodpanda, so have logistics personnel, customer service representatives, and even restaurant partnership personnel become more available. This kind of growth in jobs has assisted many families in this country. Foodpanda has also redefined the dining culture among Filipinos. For many years, dining out was reserved for special occasions or weekends at best. With that, people nowadays prefer high-quality restaurant food delivered at their doorsteps. This change in behaviour has, therefore, managed to make food delivery an important part of daily routine which many end up relying on, for regular meals or special occasions.

In fact, with the different promotions and discounts offered by foodpanda, dining has become much more affordable for most consumers, who can now try new cuisines or indulge in meals from their favorite restaurants without having to pay a great deal of money. It also enables various food cultures within the country because people have become more adventurous regarding the types of food they eat. No doubt, foodpanda changed the lives of many Filipinos by bringing convenience, jobs, supporting businesses, and paving the way for an active and dynamic culture of food. It has worked on economic participation and the lives of people in general; suffice it to say, this was much needed during specific challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. And as it further scales, it would likely continue to be one of the most important features of modern life in the Philippines and shape the way Filipinos eat, work, and live in the future.

The 2022 Philippine elections were a turning point for technology’s role in politics. With pandemic restrictions limiting in-person events, social media took center stage. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram became essential for candidates to reach voters, following the trail set by Rodrigo Duterte’s 2016 campaign.

While social media allowed candidates to connect widely and quickly, it also led to a surge in false information. Misinformation and fake news created confusion and distrust around the elections, making the need to address these issues to ensure a fair process.

Managing social media was a major challenge for the Commission on Elections (COMELEC). The rapid pace of online activity and the spread of false information made regulation difficult. Issues like targeted disinformation and data misuse further complicated the situation.

The 2022 elections revealed the urgent need for updated rules to handle the evolving landscape of social media. Future regulations must focus on preventing misinformation and ensuring that social media serves as a platform for honest and transparent communication.

People have engaged in commerce to exchange goods and services for transactional services throughout the ages. In those ages, there was a time when standard money didn't exist, utilizing different forms of payment. However, the evolution of technology has caused a change in the way people in the Philippines use financial services.

So, what does this have to do with Gcash? It is one of the revolutionizing digital payments in the Philippines. It is a mobile wallet and financial service platform developed by Globe Telecom. The utilization of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in mobile wallets has brought changes in Philippine monetary transactions.

In addition, have you heard the phrase, "I-GCash mo na ‘yan!”—this popular phrase among Filipinos highlights the rapid rise of GCash, especially during the pandemic from 2020 to 2022. According to Endo (2020), despite its inception in 2004, Gcash gained widespread popularity in the Philippines due to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas pushing for mobile transactions.

This drive improved the convenience and accessibility of financial transactions. It allows customers to make a variety of financial transactions using their mobile devices. Furthermore, they might be completed at any time and from any location with internet connectivity, making it convenient for beneficial reasons, particularly in confined regions or events. Nonetheless, the platform provides a full set of tools aimed at making financial transactions and management more convenient. These include mobile payments, money transfers, bill payments, online shopping, investment choices, and more, all of which are accessible through the mobile app.

In short, it demonstrated that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has emerged as a crucial actor in the Philippines' Gcash financial transaction. This move opens up opportunities for support and reduces the risk of handling in certain areas, an example physical money, both of which have contributed to the general expansion and modernization of the country's financial institutions.

"The Digitalization of the Pork Barrel Scam" by Julian Salvador

The infamous Pork Barrel Scam of 2013, which rocked the Philippines, was a complex web of corruption facilitated, in large part, by information and communications technology (ICT). The rapid advancement of digital technologies, including the internet, mobile phones, and sophisticated software, provided the tools necessary for perpetrators to execute their fraudulent schemes with relative ease and in secret.

The internet and social media platforms facilitated discreet communication and coordination among conspirators, enabling them to exchange sensitive information, arrange meetings, and devise strategies without leaving a physical trace. Online banking and electronic payment systems allowed for quick and efficient transfer of funds, making it difficult to track the movement of money. The use of offshore accounts and cryptocurrency further obscured the financial trail. Advanced software programs were used to manipulate financial records, create fake documents, and hide evidence of wrongdoing, making it challenging for investigators to uncover the truth. Additionally, the internet was used to spread misinformation and propaganda to deflect public scrutiny and maintain support for corrupt politicians. Social media platforms played a crucial role in shaping public opinion and influencing the narrative surrounding the scandal.

In conclusion, The Pork Barrel Scam highlighted the potential risks and vulnerabilities associated with the widespread use of ICT. While technology has undoubtedly brought many benefits to society, it can also be exploited for nefarious purposes. To prevent future scandals, it is essential to implement robust cybersecurity measures, strengthen transparency and accountability in government, and promote digital literacy among the public.

“Making Everyday Better with Grab” By John Cruz

Everyday nuisances, Food, Groceries, Packages, and Transportation; all of these are problematic for us at some point. Now with Grab, all of these are easily done within a click of a button. Grab is Southeast Asia's leading SuperApp. It provides everyday services like Deliveries, Mobility, Financial Services, and More. These services connect consumers from all walks of life with everyday entrepreneurs, providing delightful experiences and fulfilling the everyday needs of millions across 500 cities and 8 countries. In 2011, it was originally founded as a taxi-hailing app called MyTeksi. In 2013, it rebranded as GrabTaxi and introduced additional services like private car and motorbike bookings

Grab has become a necessity for many due to its features that it brings to people, many things such as its original feature, the ability to book a ride. Over the years it has added numerous features on top of its ability to book a ride anywhere, these include, GrabFood for Deliveries, GrabMart for Groceries, and GrabExpress for sending Packages, Documents, etc. These are the main features the app presents that made it into what people call, “The SuperApp of ASEAN”.

This is especially true during the quarantine era of the COVID-19 outbreak of 2020 in many countries, this includes the Philippines and many other countries in ASEAN. Due to the quarantine, many people never left their homes due to the outbreak. Grab became extremely detrimental in this situation as many people were possibly unprepared to the sudden quarantine and thus didn’t have groceries at hand. Luckily Grab had been already widely used in the Philippines and now even more so due to the outbreak. Another thing to add is their response to COVID-19 is with GrabProtect, a suite of safety and hygiene measures to minimize COVID-19 risk on their transport services.

A quick history about Grab, it all started in 2011 when the founders of Grab Holdings Inc., Anthony Tan and Tan Hooi Ling in Malaysia created MyTeksi, which was later rebranded into GrabTaxi. Soon after, it expanded to other countries, such as the Philippines in August 2013, and to Singapore and Thailand in October of the same year. Later on in 2014 it was fully rebranded into the name we all know and love, Grab.

The idea of Information Communication Technology (ICT) within the SuperApp Grab is written all over it. If we match the definition of ICT with Grab? We will find a splitting image of the same thing. Albeit a bit of a stretch, but nevertheless the same.

In summary, Grab is a great tool for many people as it provides the convenience of simply clicking a button to get what they want. From what started as a Taxi App turned into the SuperApp of ASEAN.

"Administrator Admin: ICT for Weather forecasts" by Jeoffrey Salonga

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) plays a crucial role in improving the accuracy, timeliness, and accessibility of weather forecasts. Weather forecasting involves the collection, analysis, and dissemination of a vast amount of data from various sources, and ICT tools enhance every step of this process. Here's why ICT is important in weather forecasts:

Data Collection and Observation: ICT tools enable the collection of data from various sources such as satellites, weather stations, buoys, and aircraft. These tools gather real-time data on temperature, humidity, wind speed, atmospheric pressure, and more. Remote sensing technologies like satellites provide a global view of the Earth's weather patterns.

Data Processing and Modeling: Complex weather models require enormous computational power to simulate atmospheric conditions accurately. High-performance computing (HPC) facilities, often involving clusters of powerful computers, are used to process massive datasets and run intricate simulations.

Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP): NWP models use mathematical equations to simulate the behavior of the atmosphere. These models rely on ICT infrastructure for running simulations, ingesting real-time data, and producing forecasts.

The global COVID-19 epidemic has presented never unseen obstacles to public health systems across the globe, including the Philippines. Information and communication technology (ICT) was crucial in enabling the effective and widespread distribution of vaccines during the 2021 COVID-19 vaccination deployment. ICT tools were crucial to the management of this huge public health endeavor, from appointment scheduling to real-time monitoring.

The immunization process was streamlined by the Philippine government by utilizing multiple digital platforms. The nation's digital platform for vaccination certificates, VaxCertPH, was introduced to make travel easier and to give quick access to immunization records. Through a web site, this method made it possible for people to immediately download and confirm their immunization status, which decreased paperwork and increased efficiency.

In order to handle the high number of appointments and prevent crowding at vaccination facilities, additional tools such as online registration systems and vaccination scheduling apps were deployed. By allowing residents to schedule their immunization appointments online, set up reminders, and monitor the progress of their appointments, these ICT tools improved collaboration across the board.

The distribution of correct information regarding the vaccines, including their availability, efficacy, and safety, was greatly aided by social media platforms. Campaigns on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter aided in the fight against false information and promoted vaccination. People were kept informed about vaccination locations and schedules thanks to the usage of mobile technologies for notifications and updates.

The 2021 vaccination campaign served as a prime example of how important ICT is to the management of significant public health programs. Incorporating digital tools increased accessibility and transparency while also increasing vaccination delivery efficiency.

OFWs are a big and important part of Filipino culture, with 2.3 million OFWs currently in different countries (Statista, 4/19/24). OFWs provide for their families by working in foreign countries around the world. Due to this long distance between family members, OFWs can rarely see or even talk to their loved ones.

However, in this day and age of technology, the constant developments and accessibility of technology in the world have made it possible for OFWs to experience being in the Philippines again. With the use of messaging apps, OFWs can easily contact their families wherever they are. They can speak to them via phone calls and even see their faces using video calls. Technology has made the burden of long distances easier to manage. OFWs can stay connected and be constantly informed of the latest news in the Philippines. Access to the internet allows them to stay updated through multiple news sources. Sending money to family back in the Philippines has also never been easier, with apps like GCash, PayMaya, and PayPal providing easy access for remittances.

Being an OFW is seen as a hard job because it is. Families are separated by long distances out of necessity. This not only reflects the current economic environment in the Philippines but also highlights the sacrifices OFWs make to provide for their families. With the internet and technology constantly being upgraded and optimized, these burdens become lighter for OFWs. Technology bridges connections between people around the world, and with its ongoing progress, it will continue to help not just OFWs but everyone. Technology is such a powerful innovation that the possibilities are still endless. Therefore, the internet and technology should be recognized as tools that drive our world toward the future.

Sources:

Information and communication technologies play a big role in developing our country. It serves as a way to communicate with our loved ones abroad, especially since there are a lot of Overseas Filipino Workers. ICT also played a big part in spreading information and awareness to all Filipinos across the country leading to political revolutions and unity among the people. It also helps secure our nation’s security and is overall a big help for all citizens.

ICT underwent major changes in the 1970s after World War II. But in 1994, a ComNet employee from a PLDT network facility in Makati, Benjie Tan, made the country’s first internet connection. Allowing our country to have access to the World Wide Web and emails.

On April 11, 1959, a radio broadcast called Radyo Veritas helped Filipinos become aware of the political situation during the end of the Marcos 22-year-long administration and helped unite Filipinos to fight for freedom. ICT in this historical event led to the success of the EDSA People Power Revolution. ICT also helped Filipinos to gain power against corruption in the Philippines by making countless protests like the EDSA Dos (or the Second EDSA Revolution) and the Million People March at Luneta.

ICT is also a big help whenever a national calamity arises. For example, after Super Typhoon Yolanda, ICT was used as a vital tool for people all over the world to communicate and track the situation of the victims and their relatives.

In conclusion, ICT is not only for communication with your loved ones from afar, but also for spreading awareness and information.

By: Daniella Hagnaya

Source: https://sciencesinc97.wordpress.com

"The creation of VANA blockchain for free data control" by Isabel Laqui

If you're unfamiliar with what a "blockchain" is, it is defined as a technology structure that stores transactional records of the public in several databases, known as the “chain,” in a network connected through peer-to-peer nodes. Blockchains are known for their cryptocurrency systems. In recent news, Filipino tech experts Art Abal and Anna Kazlauskas created the VANA blockchain for the public to be able to control their data. With artificial intelligence continuously advancing at this day and age, both of them realized that accessing data will be more challenging and possibly lead to tech giants in the future being in control of our own. Therefore, Abal and Kazlauskas created VANA to give Filipinos full control over their data and secure their digital futures.

Both of them had attended a class at the MIT Media Lab with the goal to uplift communities often neglected by AI advancements, so they launched TOCA initially. TOCA allowed people in low-income areas to label data with their phones and demonstrated the Philippines’ potential to bridge the AI divide. Eventually, Abal and Kazlauskas launched VANA to provide Filipinos with freedom create, share, and earn money from A.I. without interference from large corporations. The VANA blockchains has achieved global success by drawing over 140,000 participants from the Reddit Data DAO in a week. Accompanying the many features of VANA, their devs understood the the value of training data for A.I., therefore launching Data Liquidity Pools (DLP) to promote its development. It removes the need to provide sensitive and personal information for security reasons while still protecting digital assets.

This truly is a great step towards great technology advancements and protection of data for the future. VANA is very beneficial for Filipinos as it promotes data privacy and handles data without the need of a custodian. Technology advancements are inevitable and with the help of VANA blockchain Filipinos will be able to keep up with the emerging data economy. It is very valuable to have this much control with our own data as it can be scary at this day and age to just entrust it for A.I. to handle. Hopefully, this would encourage more people in the field of ICT to develop such programs to protect users and their data and craft technology for emerging markets.

In the 19th century, designers primarily relied on manual tools such as measuring tapes, rulers, and sometimes tailor's squares to measure the body for garment construction. Tailors and dressmakers took body measurements by hand, recording dimensions like bust, waist, hips, and inseam. These measurements were crucial for creating custom, well-fitted garments, as mass production techniques and advanced technologies like 3D body scanners did not yet exist. This process required skill and precision, often involving multiple fittings to ensure a perfect fit.

Over time, both computers and fashion have evolved, reflecting shifts in style, technology, and consumer preferences. Innovative computer technologies now play a critical role in the textile and fashion industries, helping manufacturers remain competitive. As fashion trends shift more rapidly and consumers seek clothing that reflects personal identity, designers are increasingly using their creativity to meet these demands. Tools like CAD systems and software for textile and fashion design, combined with 3D model visualization, have significantly sped up the creation of new collections, providing realistic representations of design concepts. This allows for a more precise analysis of how a garment fits different body types. Additionally, the precision of anthropometric measurements, essential for clothing construction, has been enhanced by modern 3D body scanning technology. This advancement supports a more personalized approach to fashion, enabling the creation of unique, made-to-measure garments or small collections tailored to individual needs.

By: Atasha Punzalan

References: https://hrcak.srce.hr/file/315136#:~:text=Role%20of%20ICT%20in%20fashion%20design%20education&text=Computer%2Daided%20design%20(CAD),%2Ddimensional%20(3D)%20objects.

https://www.starternoise.com/the-history-of-fashion-technology/

The 2016 Philippine Presidential Elections marked a pivotal shift in how Information and Communication Technology (ICT), especially social media, played a crucial role in shaping political campaigns. For the first time, platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter were extensively used to reach voters, with Rodrigo Duterte’s campaign leveraging these tools to create a direct connection with the electorate.

ICT enabled Duterte's team to bypass traditional media channels, using social media to spread targeted content and engage voters on a personal level. This approach helped build a large, active online community of supporters, significantly influencing voter sentiment and public discourse during the campaign.

The election highlighted global trends in the rise of digital campaigning, where social media became a dominant tool for political engagement. ICT democratized campaign efforts, allowing even less-funded candidates to reach mass audiences, while also exposing the growing risks of misinformation and fake news online.

The 2016 election showcased both the empowering and problematic aspects of ICT in politics. While it allowed for more inclusive political participation, it also demonstrated the need for digital literacy and ethical use of technology to prevent misinformation and manipulation, underscoring the importance of responsible ICT use in future elections.

Reference: https://www.rappler.com/philippines/elections/internet-propaganda-affected-2016-2019-philippine-elections-factsfirstph-study/

Role of ICT in EDSA (People Power Revolution)

The EDSA People Power Revolution was a three-day series of non-violent mass demonstrations due to the dictatorship of President Ferdinand Marcos. The nonviolent revolution led to the departure of President Ferdinand Marcos along with his totalitarian regime and the restoration of the democracy in the Philippines. The EDSA Revolution or Yellow revolution ran from February 22 to February 25 in the year 1986 was considered as the precursor of the nonviolent revolution around the world.

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) played the crucial role in EDSA People Power Revolution and in EDSA Dos wherein the mobile phone served as the symbol to provoke the Filipino people to have a revolution. February 25, 1986 marked a significant national event that has been engraved in the minds and hearts of the Filipino people.

In order to mobilize a popular democratic movement, Corazon Aquino needed Radio Veritas, a 24-hour AM radio station that is operated by the Roman Catholic Church, because it served as the primary communication platform for the democratic opposition. Corazon Aquino used Radio Veritas to inform the Filipino people for the political developments and to organize them for the nonviolent protests. Radio Veritas played a role in informing public about the events during the EDSA Revolution. It became the vehicle for the people to gather in EDSA in 1986, after Jaime Cardinal Sin made a public call for support through the radio station. Radio Veritas covered the events that the government-owned stations didn’t cover; a live long distance of Benigno Aquino during his US exile, his assassination, and funeral procession, and also the campaign of Corazon Aquino for the snap elections, the tally of elections, and the results of the tally elections.

In conclusion, ICT played a huge part in the EDSA People Power Revolution. They used a Roman Catholic-operated radio station to inform people to gather in EDSA, covered the events that the government didn't cover, and also covered the campaign of Corazon Aquino and the tally elections. Without the ICT, none of these things would've happened.

Resource: https://socialchange815.wordpress.com/2017/08/28/role-of-ict-in-edsa-people-power-revolution/

When Typhoon Yolanda (internationally known as Haiyan) struck the Philippines in November 2013, it was one of the strongest and most devastating tropical cyclones ever recorded. The catastrophe left a trail of destruction across the Visayas region, affecting millions of lives and overwhelming local infrastructure. Amidst this tragedy, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) emerged as a vital tool in the disaster response and recovery efforts, demonstrating the critical role that technology can play in crisis management.

One of the most significant contributions of ICT during Typhoon Yolanda was the ability to facilitate real-time communication and coordination among various response teams. With communication infrastructure severely damaged in the affected areas, satellite phones, social media, and other digital communication tools became lifelines for coordinating relief efforts. Organizations like the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) and international humanitarian agencies used these technologies to quickly disseminate information, request resources, and manage logistics.

ICT also played a crucial role in mapping and data collection. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing technologies were employed to assess the extent of the damage and identify the most affected areas. This data was vital for prioritizing relief efforts and directing resources where they were needed most. For instance, the Philippine government and various NGOs used satellite imagery to create detailed maps of the affected regions, which helped in planning the deployment of aid and the reconstruction of infrastructure.

Social media platforms and online crowdfunding websites provided a platform for crowd-sourced assistance. Filipinos and people around the world used these tools to organize fundraising campaigns, collect donations, and offer support. The global outpouring of aid was facilitated by online platforms, which allowed for the rapid mobilization of resources and volunteers. Social media also served as a tool for raising awareness and advocating for the needs of those affected by the typhoon.

reference:

https://blogs.adb.org/blog/yolanda-response-shows-power-virtual-citizen

The Role of ICT in the Success of the 1986 People Power Revolution in the Philippines De Guzman

https://sciencesinc97.wordpress.com/#:~:text=ICT%20was%20vital%20for%20the,year%20dictatorship%20and%20dictatorial%20rule.

The 1986 People Power Revolution, also known as the EDSA Revolution, stands as one of the most significant moments in Philippine history. It marked the end of Ferdinand Marcos' 20-year rule and restored democracy in the country. While much of the focus is on the unity and courage of the Filipino people, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) played a crucial role in making the revolution successful.

At the time, the World Wide Web as we know it today was not yet in place, but other forms of ICT, particularly radio and television, were pivotal in spreading information and mobilizing millions of Filipinos to join the peaceful protests. Radio station **Radyo Veritas**, a Catholic Church-run station, became a critical tool for disseminating accurate information about the growing resistance against the Marcos regime. Despite attempts by the government to shut it down, the station continued broadcasting, urging Filipinos to gather at EDSA to stand against dictatorship.

The ability to communicate instantly and widely via radio helped sustain the momentum of the revolution, as Filipinos from all walks of life came to support key figures like Corazon Aquino, Cardinal Sin, and the military defectors. Without this timely and effective communication, it is possible that the revolution would not have gained the massive public participation that made it peaceful and successful.

The EDSA Revolution illustrates the power of ICT in shaping historical events. Even in its simpler forms, ICT, through radio and television, provided a platform for free speech and mobilization in a critical time of political turmoil. The ability to communicate quickly and to large numbers of people was a game-changer. If such technology had been absent, the uprising might have been suppressed, and democracy may have taken longer to restore.

In today’s era, where the internet and social media dominate, the lessons from EDSA are more relevant than ever. ICT can serve as a double-edged sword—while it can foster unity and promote social justice, it can also spread misinformation. The EDSA Revolution showed how ICT, when used responsibly, can be a powerful tool for positive societal change.

The COVID-19 pandemic marked one of the most significant global challenges in recent history. In the Philippines, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) played a pivotal role in managing the health crisis, ensuring connectivity, and promoting public safety. One of the most notable contributions of ICT was the creation and management of StaySafe.ph, a contact tracing and health monitoring app developed by the national government.

The Impact of StaySafe.ph

StaySafe.ph became an essential tool for mitigating the spread of COVID-19. The app allowed individuals to self-report their health status, identify symptoms, and access real-time updates from local health authorities. This data was then aggregated and analyzed to provide the government with critical information regarding potential outbreak hotspots. It enabled swift contact tracing efforts, helping health workers identify people who may have been exposed to the virus, leading to early testing, isolation, and treatment.

Moreover, StaySafe.ph was integrated with the local government’s systems, allowing seamless coordination across different regions. It was also used in public places like malls, offices, and transportation hubs, where individuals were required to scan QR codes for contact tracing purposes. The app’s widespread adoption demonstrated how ICT can enhance government response efforts, especially during a crisis of this magnitude.

ICT’s Role in Public Communication and Awareness

Beyond contact tracing, ICT tools played a critical role in disseminating accurate information to the public. Social media platforms, government websites, and mobile networks were utilized to send timely updates regarding quarantine guidelines, health protocols, and vaccine rollouts. In a time of widespread misinformation, these platforms helped ensure that the public was informed with reliable and up-to-date information.

Government agencies, healthcare providers, and the private sector collaborated through online meetings and virtual forums, which enabled swift decision-making and resource allocation. ICT made it possible to maintain transparency and coordination during a very unpredictable situation.

Challenges and Lessons

While ICT greatly contributed to the success of the Philippines’ COVID-19 response, it was not without challenges. Data privacy concerns were raised, as the app collected sensitive health data. The government took measures to ensure data security, but the issue highlighted the need for clear data privacy policies in emergency situations. Additionally, the digital divide posed another challenge—many communities in remote areas had limited access to the internet or smartphones, limiting their ability to benefit from ICT-driven initiatives.

Conclusion

The role of ICT in the Philippines’ COVID-19 response underscored the importance of digital technology in crisis management. Platforms like StaySafe.ph showcased how digital solutions can improve public health outcomes by enhancing communication, data management, and real-time response efforts. However, the experience also highlighted the importance of addressing issues like digital access and data security to ensure a more inclusive and secure use of technology in future crises. https://www.trade.gov/country-commercial-guides/philippines-information-and-communications-technology#:~:text=Several%20ICT%20approaches%20emerged%20to,to%20cybersecurity%20and%20analytics%20solutions.

Among the most important events in Philippine history, where Information and Communication Technology (ICT) became a force for change, is the People Power Revolution of 1986. The bloodless revolution, ending with the ousting of President Ferdinand Marcos, relied extensively on media and communication technologies to push the movement.

In this respect, the time was one wherein radio stations, television networks, and print media were taken for information diffusion and mass mobilization of citizens almost always. Live updates from the streets along with images of protest and demonstration snapped about by various people made everyone accept and involve themselves in the transformations happening around them. Not to mention social networking sites which do not even exist at this time represent a certain preview of that 'information exchange speed' which became the hallmark of all modern revolutions.

By: Phoebe Fernando

Reference: https://www.docsity.com/en/one-momentous-event-in-philippine-history-wherein-ict-played-a-huge-role-in-making-it-a-success/7244131/

During the pandemic, getting valid government IDs was hard since our country was on lockdown. However, the government made a digital national ID program. Despite the odds during the pandemic, the PSA was successful on the digital ID program, wherein 50 million people registered in 2021, the same year it was launched. Mendoza says that the original timeline for the development of PhilSys was a “leisurely” five years. However, the PSA was forced to drastically reduce the project's schedule because to the immediate need to make social benefits more accessible during the pandemic.

The digital national ID during the pandemic was a good move by the government since it made it easy for Filipinos to get a valid ID from home without the hassle of going to the nearest PSA. Even though they had to cut the project's schedule, it still turned out successful, with almost half of the country's population registering when it launched.

Link: https://govinsider.asia/intl-en/article/how-the-philippines-tapped-on-open-source-to-implement-digital-identity-and-improve-services
