      <description>An electric car, battery electric car, or all-electric car is an automobile that is propelled by one or
more electric motors, using only energy stored in batteries. Compared to internal combustion
engine (ICE) vehicles, electric cars are quieter, have no exhaust emissions, and lower
emissions overall. In the United States and the European Union, as of 2020, the total cost of
ownership of recent electric vehicles is cheaper than that of equivalent ICE cars, due to lower
fueling and maintenance costs. Charging an electric car can be done at a variety of charging
stations; these charging stations can be installed in both houses and public areas.</description>

Higher Purchase Price<br></sub></strong><sub>Another factor contributing to electric cars’ higher price is the cost of rare earth minerals (lithium, cobalt, manganese, nickel, and graphite) used to manufacture EV batteries, most of which come from outside of the United States. Cobalt is perhaps less essential to EV batteries than the other minerals, and the U.S. government aims to eliminate cobalt from electric car batteries by 2030. Some car manufacturers are </sub><a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/11/17/samsung-panasonic-and-tesla-embracing-cobalt-free-batteries-.html"><sub>embracing cobalt-free batteries</sub></a><sub>, which could eventually bring down the cost of electric vehicles. Until electric vehicles become more popular, expect a little sticker shock when comparing their prices to traditional vehicles.<br><br></sub><strong><sub>2. Registration Fees</sub></strong><sub><br>Gas taxes, applied at the pump in some states when filling up a gas-powered vehicle, are used to help pay for road repairs. As electric vehicles don’t use gas, states apply an additional registration fee of around $50 to $200 to EVs. Currently, Georgia has some of the highest EV fees, but check this </sub><a href="https://www.myev.com/research/interesting-finds/states-that-charge-extra-fees-to-own-an-electric-vehicle"><sub>full list of states and electric car registration fees</sub></a><sub> for more info.<br><br>3. </sub><strong><sub>Insurance Premiums<br></sub></strong><sub>Most car insurance companies charge higher rates for electric cars because they’re more expensive to repair and replace, and fewer repair shops have EV-trained staff. Because of this, expect to pay 5 to 20 percent more for electric car insurance than you would for a gas-powered car.<br><br></sub><strong><sub>4. Road Charging</sub></strong><sub><br>While there’s no doubt that the cost to charge an electric car is cheaper than paying for gas, your actual savings will be considerably lower if you charge on the road as opposed to at home. Public charging facilities differ markedly in pricing, with some demanding payment for minutes spent charging and others going by the kWh of electricity used. While DC fast chargers can add 100 miles of range in 10 minutes, they are also the most expensive public charging option. However, convenience and the time spent charging a vehicle are factors to consider, too.<br><br></sub><strong><sub>5. Home Charging</sub></strong><sub><br>Although it’s the cheapest charging method by far, charging an electric car at home also has its drawbacks. It’s probably cheaper to charge an EV with a Level 1 charger using a standard 120-volt outlet, but this option isn’t practical if you drive your car daily since this type of charging can take 24 to 36 hours (or longer in cold climates). This means daily commuters need to have a more expensive Level 2 </sub><a href="https://www.bobvila.com/articles/best-ev-charger-installers/"><sub>electric car charger professionally installed</sub></a><sub> for convenient overnight charging.<br><br></sub><strong><sub>6.</sub></strong><sub> </sub><strong><sub>Battery Replacement<br></sub></strong><sub>Unlike a standard car battery, an electric vehicle battery is not cheap. They’re good for 100,000 miles but come with a hefty price tag of $10,000 to $20,000, so expect to reinvest some of your gas savings into purchasing a new battery down the line. EV battery technology is anticipated to improve over the next few years—and their prices will likely come down—but if you intend to rack up the miles, it’s worth factoring in how you’ll pay for a new battery.<br><br>Some conditions can cause faster electric car battery degradation. For example, using super-fast DC charging degrades battery life. Manufacturer </sub><a href="https://www.kia.com/dm/discover-kia/ask/how-to-extend-ev-battery-life.html"><sub>Kia</sub></a><sub> notes that fast charging causes 10 percent in battery life degradation over a period of eight years.<br><br></sub><strong><sub>7. Some vehicles use motor generators that perform both the drive and regeneration functions.<br><br></div><div><strong>Onboard charger:</strong> Takes the incoming AC electricity supplied via the charge port and converts it to DC power for charging the traction battery.          <description><![CDATA[<blockquote><strong>MALAYSIA </strong>targets to have 100,000 electric vehicles (EVs) on the road by 2030, with a significant portion being commercial EVs such as buses and trucks. <br><br>However, the question remains as to whether Malaysia is ready for the adoption of commercial EVs. <br><br>According to fleet expert Nazirul Aiman Munir from the Malaysia Bus Trucker Mobility Movement, the country has a conducive environment for EVs. <br><br>“With the abundance of renewable energy sources and favourable government policies, we believe that Malaysia is ready to adopt commercial EVs,” he said to <em>The Malaysian Reserve (TMR)</em>.&nbsp;<br><br>Moreover, he said Malaysia has a strong local automotive industry that could play a vital role in supporting the development and adoption of commercial EVs.&nbsp;<br><br>“Malaysia has the capability to develop an EV ecosystem with its existing automotive industry.&nbsp;<br><br>“We have the talent and expertise to produce electric buses, trucks and other commercial EVs that are customised to suit our local needs,” he added.&nbsp;<br><br>Despite its readiness, Malaysia is still facing several challenges in the adoption of commercial EVs, especially in terms of infrastructure.&nbsp;</blockquote><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li><strong><sub>Insufficient Charging Stations, Other Related Infrastructure</sub></strong></li></ul><div><br></div><div><sub>The lack of charging stations for large vehicles and other related infrastructures remain a significant hurdle to the widespread adoption of EVs, particularly in rural areas.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div><div><sub>Kolej Poly-Tech Mara Bangi vehicle technology lecturer Dr Sulaiman Mohd said the EV infrastructure the country currently has is still not enough to cater to the growing demand for EVs.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div><div><sub>To address this issue, the government has taken several initiatives to promote the development of EV infrastructure in the country.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div><div><sub>This includes offering tax incentives for companies that invest in EV charging stations and has set a target to install 125,000 charging stations nationwide by 2030.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div><div><sub>In addition to infrastructure, the cost of EVs and the limited awareness of the benefits of EVs among Malaysians are other challenges that need to be addressed.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div><div><sub>“We need to educate businesses on the benefits of EVs, such as lower operating costs and environmental benefits.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div><div><sub>“We also need to make EVs more affordable and accessible to everyone,” said Sulaiman.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div><div><sub>Nevertheless, despite the challenges, Malaysia is making progress in the adoption of commercial EVs.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div><div><sub>Technology consulting company Arthur D Little Singapore engagement manager Akshay Prasad shared insights on Malaysia’s readiness and plans for EV charging infrastructure.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div><div><sub>“As of January 2023, Malaysia has approximately 900 charging points, catering to around 10,000 registered EVs,” he said, adding that Malaysia is expected to provide up to 4,000 EV charging points this year.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div><div><sub>However, he noted that the majority of these charging points are alternating current (AC) chargers, which have limited charging speed.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div><div><sub>This poses a challenge for commercial EVs that travel long distances, even interstate, on tight schedules.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div><div><sub>Of the 4,000 target charging points, Akshay said around 10% will be dedicated to direct current charging, which is faster with a power of at least 50 kilowatts, while the remaining 90% will be AC chargers.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div><div><sub>“These plans are part of Malaysia’s effort to transition towards cleaner and greener transportation options,” he said.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div><div><sub>However, Akshay also highlighted that the country has a long way to go in terms of providing sufficient charging infrastructure to support the growing EV market.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li><strong><sub>Potential Solutions to EV Woes</sub></strong></li></ul><div><br></div><div><sub>In addition to traditional charging stations, battery swapping is another potential solution.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div><div><sub>Battery swapping involves recharging the EV by providing the EV owner with a new battery each time they visit a battery swapping station.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div><div><sub>This method has its advantages and disadvantages, but one significant advantage is that it can bring down the cost of purchasing an EV since the battery is removed from the purchase cost.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div><div><sub>Malaysia’s low cost of electricity also makes it attractive for battery-swapping station operators to consider this opportunity.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div><div><sub>However, purchasing EVs can be expensive and may not be accessible for fleet operators, despite the government’s efforts to promote EV adoption in Malaysia.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div><div><sub>One potential solution is to consider EV conversion services, which convert an existing internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle into an EV by removing the powertrain and replacing it with a battery, motor, controller and battery management system.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div><div><sub>Such EV conversion services can provide a “converted EV” for half the price of a new EV purchase.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div><div><sub>Various reputable vendors are available globally, regionally and locally, with Bosch being one of the most prominent.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div><div><sub>While concerns exist about the overall quality of the “converted vehicle”, governments can play a more proactive role in setting minimum quality standards for power, range and warranty, among others.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div><div><sub>“EV conversion services are still not allowed in Malaysia, but policymakers and thought leaders are open to having an open discussion on the matter and possibly implementing it in the future.&nbsp;<br></sub><br></div><div><sub>“In countries like the US, France and India, EV conversion services are already being used.
