2. Invisible Cities

After reading the extract detailing the city of Valdrada, my team and myself decided on a few details that is seen in the extract and will be seen on the drawing. The first would be a city reflected onto the water which would show how two cities would be erected on land and water. Second would be the lake and how it would be in the middle of everything with a city on the left and it’s other part on the right side both reflecting into the water. We also would add the detail where the narrator would say “Thus the travel, arriving,” and have the view of everything from a tall cliff. I believe this would make a sort of cinematic vision to show the traveler viewing the city and a large lake in front of them.

After finishing the sketching, I decided to use a watercolor. I also decided to use slightly wet watercolour to paint darker patches of grass, and the road stretching along the coast of the water. To show the mirror like effect of the water onto the city, I went with two dimensional shapes as homes. I also made sure to include details of the homes onto the reflections to have a bit of realism.

This project has been a learning experience, for me as I've been able to enhance my skills by creating detailed artwork inspired by nature. Although there’s room for improvement in how I portray homes and their reflections in the lake I view these areas of weakness as opportunities for growth. The simplicity in depicting homes resembling animated cartoons helps me identify areas where I can refine my abilities. My goal is to explore designs that will enhance the visual appeal of the homes. Additionally I'm determined to master techniques for capturing deep reflections in the lake. All this project has served as a stepping stone towards self discovery and improvement offering important lessons that will contribute to my ongoing development, as an artist.

This drawing shows a wine glass, a wine bottle, a mason jar and the tray that sits below them. I used a combination of 6b, 2b and hb for this drawing. I occasionally used the lighter pencils to draw most of the objects and also used them to create lighter outlines that aren't very visible. The bolder 6b was used to create a sort of smudging effect on the wine glass. I think this helped show the darkest part of the wine glass slowly fade to where the light is shining on. In all, I think this drawing had all of the 5 drawing techniques that was required.

In this this section of Rembrandt’s “The Angel Appearing to the Shepherds”, it is seen that the entirety of the image is made up of cross hatching, hatching or a form of scumbling.

I used mostly 2b or 4b to create a path for my work with the pen. Starting out, I was using the 6b pencil for the bottom right section as I saw that there was a lot of dark sections but I switched over to using lighter tones as I would want to leave some space for the pen work instead of just graphite.

In all I felt like there was a lot of attention needed to be paid to certain details which were shapes or the strokes of the pen to create flows. And certain parts of the section should be darker than others or lighter than others.

Yuseong's Padlet - Value Drawing:

I really liked the textures of the objects in your drawing. I noticed how the feather had a really light tone but I was able to see it and it really helped reinforce the lightness of the feather. I also liked that the skull had a circular line on the side when the other parts of the skull had been drawn using hatching. I also think the background and the pages of the book was flawlessly completed as it really showed how the bold graphite slowly faded down to nothingness or the other way around. In all, I think this was great and really shows all of the five shading techniques.

Huy's Padlet: I liked how you gave the plant's leaves a lighter tone in contrast to the background. This definitely shows the shape of the leaves in the dark background. I also noticed how you used different flows of shading throughout the image like you built a lego set with legos from different sets. A thing that I saw which could have improved the background of the image slightly would be making the background blend together as I can distinguish where the lines of the grid you used were before and continuing shading on the borders between the squares would have had made it have a better flow.

James' Padlet: Howdy James, I'd agree with you about the loops looking out of shape. Besides that, I liked how you used the rings to make the man in the middle the center of attention. I also noticed how you made his legs longer so it would look like he was leaning into the tunnel or walking into it. I also liked how you depicted the end of the tunnel as an endless void. Instead of having rings, i think it would be better drawn on paper and have the rings attached onto the paper itself.

I started out by tracing the illusion on a translucent piece of paper after I had use an online tool to brighten the image so I was able to clearly see the darker illusion in contrast to the light nature background on the paper. I did this so that I would have a clear view of where my illusion moves through different elements and bold colors in the mountainscape. Then, I used a grid to map out and keep track of certain points in the image such as the focal point of the image, the mountains on the side, and the trees and clouds on the top or bottom to connect the illusion. To add onto the layers of my drawing, I used a clear film and a dark marker to help map out the path of the spiral. As without the film, I think it was harder to see the spiral in the colours. And this was necessary to have due to the original image had dark green colours next to grey rock and it may be hard to distinguish between illusion and non-illusion. I used dark green acrylic paint to show the bolder parts of the forest which would be the path of my spiral illusion.

As for colors, the roof of the golf cart and the dark grass are complementary colors as they are opposite of each other on the color wheel. Another example of complementary colors I saw was the contrast between red and green in the flower bushes. I would suggest considering the large pink mass on the right side of the image as I have not figured out what it may be.

I'm excited to share my progress on this art project, which began with a black and white mountain range collage. It lacked much of the color schemes, so I decided to inject some quirkiness and zestiness!

I added a man with his headset and a woman in a meditation pose, creating a fun juxtaposition. I used a grid system to map out the background and human figures, ensuring accurate proportions. While acrylic paint dominated the piece, I had small touches of colored pencil, charcoal, and graphite to add depth and texture.

Needless to say, there are a few things that need to be fixed. Nearing the end, I noticed that the acrylic paint started to make my drawing look a lot like an abstract painting. Another small thing I noticed was that the area behind the mountains was a sunset but failed to recreate a realistic sunset which would be from blue to orange and finally end with red.
