Pinky Pie Padlet by

My classroom library is a central tool for supporting writing instruction. By offering a wide variety of genres, voices, and cultural perspectives, these books serve as mentor texts that model rich vocabulary, strong narrative structure, and effective use of literary techniques. Students draw inspiration from these texts to improve their own writing, whether they are crafting descriptive scenes, persuasive arguments, or personal narratives. Through read-alouds, book discussions, and connected writing activities, the library encourages critical thinking, sparks creativity, and provides authentic examples of how great writers develop ideas, build characters, and convey emotion.

Written by Anna Dewdney

Llama Llama Red Pajama supports my writing instruction by modeling strong rhythm, rhyme, and clear sequencing of events. All these skills are essential for early writers. The story’s simple but very expressive language demonstrates how words can convey big feelings, which will help students understand how to add emotion and voice to their own writing. Its predictable pattern also provides a platform for young writers to imitate when planning their own stories. I would have my students write about whether they think Baby Llama should have been more patient, giving reasons for their opinion.

Written by Louis Sachar

Holes supports my writing instruction by providing rich examples of character development, layered plot structure, and effective use of flashbacks. The novel’s multiple timelines and storylines help students analyze how authors build suspense and connect past and present, skills they can apply in their own narrative . The book’s themes of justice, friendship, and perseverance also give students meaningful topics to explore in reflective or argumentative pieces. My students could write a series of diary entries from the perspective of a chosen character, practicing voice and point of view.

Written by J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone supports writing instruction by showcasing vivid world building, descriptive language, and clear story structure. J.K. Rowling’s use of dialogue and detailed settings provides strong mentor text examples for teaching students how to create believable characters and immersive scenes. The novel’s themes of friendship, courage, and identity invite both creative and analytical writing. A good writing activity could be having the students compare Harry’s growth in this book to a personal experience of facing a challenge, emphasizing narrative structure and reflection.

Illustrated by Denise Brunkus

This book supports writing instructions by providing an example of narrative structure, voice, and character development. There is humorous and expressive storytelling in this story. This helps the students understand how an author uses first person narration, descriptive language, and dialogue to make a story engaging. The story also models how to show emotions and personality through writing, which students can apply to their own narrative and opinion pieces. The different writing activities I would use for this story are personally narrative writing, character perspective writing, or letter writing. These are all fun and expressive ways to connect to the story.
