Hola Griff! I really appreciate the artifacts you selected to share. I like the emphasis you put on the diversity of the school and the risks of gentrification currently occurring. I can definitely see the differences between my school community and yours in regards to access to food choices for example as well as the buildings. I enjoyed seeing the neighborhood your school is at and love your map by the way!

Very interesting, Cassie! I didn't realize what a big school district was up there. I'm at David Douglas, and it's gigantic, but seems very different from Vancouver area. I wonder how students see themselves in terms of their local identity. I've heard that teaching in Washington is much better as a teacher (more resources).

Gaby it's interesting how our schools have some things in common but the neighborhoods are very different. Yours has so many restaurants and is close to so much, while David Douglas is not very walkable, has little public transportation (one good bus line, #4), and no New Seasons. But my neighborhood like yours makes me more conscious of students who are doing without a lot (one thing I read called it the "invisible backpack" of trauma).

This was a really interesting read. I am always curious about what students do when their school is surrounded by a whole lot of nothing. I'm curious what they do for lunch, do they drive somewhere? Go home? Bring lunch? Cafeteria? It might be an interesting question for your students. And maybe if they do bring a lunch you can have like a fun lunch club with them! I wonder if they have felt the change you spoke about in the area, or if they are unaware of how it has developed so recently. Anyway! Great read!

Hi Griff,
I really enjoyed your slide show presentation! I think it is important that you too recognize the gentrification in the Cesar Chavez community- do students ever bring it up in the classroom? Because the area seems to be in a desirable location, I wonder how much will change in the coming years (unfortunately). I loved seeing the BLM and LGBTQ support flags in people's lawns, it is awesome that surrounding neighbors are proud supporters and reflect positivity and acceptance. Well done!

I think your inclusion of artistic, black and white photos was quite nice. Open School's neighborhood and student population really couldn't be more different than the neighborhood/population served by Jackson Middle School. It is interesting to note that while the needs and backgrounds of our students are so different, the approach we take as educators remains the same in terms of the importance of providing culturally relevant and sustaining lessons as well as making kids feel seen, valued, and respected.

Hey Gaby, I lived a few blocks from there for many years and loved raising my kids around the stark contrasts of poverty and prosperity - it really gave them a sense of the injustices that they were mainly shielded from simply from their birth circumstances. I used to run on the Lincoln track early in the morning; I was so pleased it was open to the public and that helped shape my view that schools should be more than learning centers for children.

After spending time in the area surrounding MHS and talking with some of my students, I feel I better understand the school I am working at. It is easy to feel disconnected in a new place during distance learning, but I am thankful to have more insight, especially from the students. If I were to describe Mountainside in five words, I would use developing, welcoming, collaborative, innovative, and fortunate. The school is still developing its sense of community, and the area itself is in a bit of transition from a farming community to a suburban one. The students and staff have been incredibly welcoming to me; it feels good to be wanted and accepted during this time. The students expressed an emphasis in collaborative experiences really impacting their high school experience; specifically in clubs or extracurricular activities. I think this is common, but because the school is so massive, those niche communities in the large student body are SO important. The school reflects innovation in that they have really cool resources: Podcasting equipment, any sports field you could imagine, classes and programs to support student learning, wide varieties of clubs, and so much room to grow. The community is fortunate in two ways as I see it. First, the space where the high school provides lots of opportunity to morph over time and will change as the student body changes. Second, the students and staff seem to share a wonderful relationship. I can see how much the staff cares for its students, and the students expressed how important it was to have a staff that respected them. The students in the interviews admitted the school has room to grow and become more inclusive, but I believe it is on the right path.

Despite the fact that it is already my second year working at Cesar Chavez, I think it was important to take time to walk around the area, as well as the neighborhood that surrounds it. Not to mention the fact that we work from home now, and it is easy to forget certain details. Chavez is a wonderful school, and has a lot of great potential for the utilization of its outdoor space. In fact, some colleagues of mine are already thinking about how they can transform part of the parking lot into a garden, or perhaps an outdoor classroom which would be amazing. I would say there wasn't much that surprised me because of the amount of time that I have already lived in the area, but it was really nice getting to do some interviews and see what others thought about the pandemic and how the neighborhood has changed over time. That was probably my favorite part of the experience! It's a shame to see how gentrification is taking over, and I'm wondering what the city of Portland might be doing to take action against rising housing costs.

I appreciate doing this assignment as it makes us realize the importance of knowing the place we work and how the community has such an important role. I was looking around the areas of the school through different eyes, in particular talking to the people that actually live there was a great way to reflect on the school and the neighborhood. It was interesting to learn how the pandemic has affected the businesses around the neighborhood while others are so fortunate to not have their lives as disrupted. I could tell how much the community misses the freedom to move around downtown, the independence that the public transportation offers as well as the variety of places to eat or things to do. These are things that we all take for granted, it was definitely sad to hear they miss the sense of getting together for games for example. I definitely find this valuable and makes me try harder to come up with activities that enhance our sense of community in the classroom.

We are in the middle of a pandemic and we look for new ways of keeping our teaching practices alive. We struggle with the circumstances; however your attitude of exploring to learn and serve your students in this cycle makes the idea of serving students systematically possible.
