Sheila Johansson (production assistant)

Sheila Johansson is 26 years old and she lives in New York City. She is originally from Sweden but has moved to the US at the age of two, because of her parents jobs. Originally we thought with Jen(dialect coach) that she could have an exaggerated swedish accent but as I was rehearsing for the play I did not think it suited the style of play and made the already energetic character seem illegitimate. She is an only child and comes from a seemingly wealthy family, which is why she is not noticeably stressed with the direction of her career and although she is good at her job, she likes to take things chill and let the other members of her work team worry about issues in the company. This gives her the freedom to enjoy relationships and gossiping.

initial ideas of sheila's costume and aesthetic from the 70s to the 2000s

For her style I originally thought she might be someone clumsy and quirky, who runs around the office with her stack of papers, crooked glasses and coffee mug with the liquid spilled on her shirt. As I got more familiar with her and the way she spoke and her role in the work space, I did not feel that that was her character. She is more calm and confident yet giggly energetic and unapologetic at the same time.

my sketch for Sheilas costume

This was my sketch for Sheilas costume before seeing what Hugo (in charge of costumes) had planned for me. I saw her in something feminine, youthful yet somewhat seductive for the century. I still wanted her to have the "nerdy" quirky element with the big glasses. Although she seems like a feminine young woman she knows how to take charge and have her voice be heard if needed.

When I saw what Hugo had planned for me to wear playing Sheila, I was shocked at the similarities to my original idea. She is all covered up because of the decade and professionalism but shows her silhouette to seduce her love interests in the office. I thought it was a perfect costume for her. Also I did give the idea of the glasses as I really wanted to include them and thought they matched her character and aesthetic perfectly. Sheila can swap between characters whether she has the glasses on or off and it was fun to imrpovisingly play with that idea during the performance.
