Puritans happened between the time of Elizabeth and Charles II and it refers to the movement for reform within the Church of England. Based off of John Calvin ideas, they tried to remove any type of catholic traditions from the church. When Queen Elizabeth died, Charles II dissolved parliament which stopped any connections between state and church. Anyone who didn't support the new Anglican Church would be killed. This causes the puritans to leave for the new world in 1620, established the Massachusetts colony. This is the main cause of the beginning of the crucible.

Calvinism was created by John Calvin. They wanted to rid the church of any Catholic beliefs. The four main theological beliefs the puritans adopted was total depravity, Predestination, grace and Limited atonement. The puritan community was a theocracy government. That means they mixed state and church. These beliefs cause the witch hunts in Salem to go on because the government and church weren't separate so because of the fear of satan they allowed it.

The first to be effect was Betty Parris. She became strangely ill, her symptoms was she was dashing about, diving under furniture, contorted in pain, and ha a fever. When eleven-year-old Ann Putnam, seventeen-year-old Mercy Lewis, and Mary Walcott began to exhibit the same symptoms the talk of witchcraft began. When the doctor checked them out there was nothing actually wrong with them and suggested it might be supernatural origin. This was extremely convincing because it was more common for witches to target children. It seems very odd that the doctor didn't have a actual diagnoses for now a days is so know because its common for people to have it, so he suggested something that doesn't involve medical.
