Jess, it's great you made this bulletin. I know many people who are ashamed of themselves because of all the misconceptions surrounding OCD. I, for one, am not afraid to admit that I struggle with this disorder but haven't publicly came out until now, honestly. Like many others, I've had the disorder for a good number of years. The main thing I want others with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder to know is that you don't have to be afraid to tell people.

My name is Allison and I'm from Fulton, MS.

When talking about OCD, this is a topic that is actually very personal to me. All during high school, I struggled with many different issues. I started feeling depressed about things. Then while attending a football game, I had an anxiety attack. I could never really figure out where all of these problems came from. It wasn't like me to feel this way. I went to doctors who automatically assumed that I needed to be put on anti-depression medication. However, these meds never seemed to make things any better. My depression was different. After a few months of taking medications, I would just stop taking them because they didn't work. I got tired of feeling this way. Finally, I had enough with not feeling "normal". I went to a doctor who actually listened to my problems and decided to examine me instead of just putting me on anti-depressants like every other doctor. My doctor finally realized that I wasn't dealing with depression, instead I was struggling with OCD. She put me on medication that made me feel normal again.

My OCD is a tad bit different than what most people conceive of to be. Whenever I would deal with something small, I would make it into a bigger deal. I would think of all the negative things that could happen, and then dwell on in. I also realized that I had a tendency to plan out my day. If things did not go the way I had planned for them to go, I would have a mental breakdown.

People should be more aware of OCD. Many people around us are struggling with this disorder. This disorder controls your life and makes people miserable!

I want to personally thank you for raising awareness to this condition. Great job!

October 12th - What are some things you wish everyone knew about OCD?

I wish that people knew how awful OCD is. I want then to know how much it sucks to not be able to do simple things that everyone else can do because of this annoying ball of anxiety in your head. I want everyone to know how embarrassing it is to not be able to open a doorknob because ‘it’s wrong and dirty and you’ll die.’ I want everyone to know how much internal panic you go through if you forget to count in even numbers or if you step on a crack in the sidewalk. I want people to know how terrifying it is when your brain to convinces you that you’re not real, and you’re being controlled by people in the sky. I want people to know the agony of praying for 30 minutes before going to bed, and then spending another 30 minutes trying to remember if you forgot anything in your prayers. If you did, you’ll have to start all over again because “If anyone dies it will be your fault, your fault, your fault.” I want people to know about the sleepless nights you spend obsessing about how dirty you are and feeling like you need to wash again and again and again. I want people to know how humiliating it is to be told that your fears aren’t valid, and that you need to get over it. I want everyone to know how alone you feel when you get made fun of for compulsions you can’t control.
I want everyone to know that OCD isn’t a joke. Every day is a small victory for me. I want those with OCD to know that it will get better. I believe in you. I’m here for you.

A very common misconception about OCD is that just because someone likes things a certain way, they think they have OCD, which is not the case at all. It really gets annoying because if people just did a small bit of research (we have google, it isn't hard), this misconception would not be so widely held by the general public.

^ While still a funny picture, I would have to argue that this is based off of a stereotype. People with OCD don't necessarily obsess over simple items being "perfect."

I'm still going to keep it here because this could potentially be something that someone with OCD could have a few obsessive thoughts about. I just don't think they would be very severe, If that makes any sense.
