I wanted to do a drawing with a shading technique I learned from last week's Visual Arts class, so I chose my floppy disk coaster on my desk. I used cross-hatching for this since I thought it would look good as a shadow. Super simple, but I think it worked out in the end. I think I should've put more time into this though.

Like the floppy disk coaster on my table, I have used again objects from my table as reference. For this one, I used a knock-off stanley water jug. I tried using sighting for this but I think I was way off since it looks like it is slanting. I'm new to the sighting technique so it's confusing at first but at least it's a start. Also, I think the drawing is too small and the parts of the jug are not sized properly.

This is a super quick drawing of a tree I can spot from my window and decided to use as a reference. Initially, I wanted to go into in detail drawing it. However, I thought I should still focus on basic shapes and line work before putting all my effort into a drawing. I plan to gradually get more detailed into drawing trees since I can use the trees outside my window as reference. It is a start, but (hopefully) these fast drawings will get better.

I brought some of my art supplies when going to a beach in Batangas, and I stopped over at a Starbucks to have breakfast and create this quick drawing of a tree I saw near the entrance. Again, I'm just experimenting with curvy lines to attempt to make it look like leaves. Still trying to draw more in detailed even with a timer on.

8/20/25 Statue of "Pasasalamat" by Ferdinand R. Cacnio, 2006

I've always passed by this sculpture but it was only when I was heading home from school that I was wondering who made this and what's the point of it anyway. So when I arrived home, I did some research on it and found out it was a commissioned art piece meant to convey thankfulness as the title of the work would suggest. The two fishermen are looking up in a sort of surrendering position to show their thankfulness to God for their fishing. Another thing I learned when I was reading about it was that up close, the two figures have a rough texture and apparently that's supposed to be a symbol of human flaws. I just thought this sculpture is interesting because I initially thought it's just a random statue there for decorative purposes but it actually has some meaning and relevance to it that people like me tend to overlook since I see it often.

This is another overlooked artwork I saw on the way home from school after passing by "Pasasalamat" by Ferdinand R. Cacino that I wanted to know about. After doing some digging about it, the title is a reference to the early filipino settlers' (the Malays') boat named Balanghai. It is also a reference to the word barangay which was what the Malay called communities in pre-colonial times. The sculpture is a reflection of the creation of a new community (baranggay) which is BGC since at the time the city was just forming. I think it's cool that there's some historical background/inspiration about it and I should probably start looking into other artwork I mistook for decorative stuff.

It's calming to draw it in fact, but I have no idea what kind of trees or flowers it is. I drew this by doing fast strokes of lines to get the leaves (?) right instead of doodling its shape like the others.

I started a new personal art project today. It is a remake of my 2022 and 2019 fanart of the Beatles I made. Realism takes too much time so I opted for cartoonish renditions of them in the late 60s. The symbols below them represents them. This took 2 days since I focused heavily on drawing the large font. It is a reference to their 1967 album, Magical Mystery Tour. One of my favorites. I plan to draw their most famous songs in this artwork. For example, I'll draw the Yellow Submarine for the song of the same title. I will draw a strawberry for the song Strawberry Fields Forever. So basically, it will have a lot of song references in here. I had much fun designing the colorful font. I will try to update about this weekly.

Based on what I learned, I cannot find the artist but I believe it is inspired by "Eden" by Louis Joseph Fuchs (1861) which is a panoramic wallpaper that was manufactured by Jules Desfossé using engraved wood blocks (like how a stamp works, I think).

Similarly, this painting at the Manila Peninsula Hotel reminded me of the album cover of Masayoshi Takanaka's jazz fusion album, The Rainbow Goblins. Both have the same vibe in the sense they are detailed artworks of nature. I just thought to add that since I just found the connection interesting lol.

9/6/25 Tokyo Hotel Sketch by Kei Endo excerpt

Nearly forgot to post this lol.

After a recent trip to Japan, my mother got this design book for me called Tokyo Hotel Sketch by Kei Endo. The premise is that this is a collection of watercolor sketches that Endo made during her stay at several hotels. Surprisingly, it is extremely detailed as in she [Endo] records the floor plans and measurements of each room as well as the furniture/objects in said room. What is even more interesting is that minor things like a towel or something as little as a door knob is drawn.

I read more about her and she actually graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts with a degree in architecture, which now makes sense why she really got the proportions and details of the hotel rooms right. Personally, I really love her art style and how in-depth this book takes me (despite my nonexistent understanding of Japanese). Her artwork is peaceful and it is like I can explore the room in the book.

Of course, I had to make some Beatles fanart. This one is heavily based off the coverart of the compilation album The Beatles Ballads. This is more of a cartoony take on them that I included with lots of references. Their look in this is supposed to be what they looked like towards the breakup of the band, which is exactly why John Lennon here is stomping on a bust of Paul McCartney who has bootmarks on his shirt to represent the tension between Paul and John. I drew John holding up a platter with a ball of his wife, Yoko Ono, on it to show how he prioritized or "held up" Yoko than the rest of the Beatles (the Japanese text is also a reference to Yoko). Other references like Ringo and George's heads are supposed to show how they are finally "growing" after the band's split and going their seperate ways. The apple is also to show how their friendships have deteriorated and how their multimedia company (Apple Corps) is also in financial troubles.

I thought I'd like to focus on John Lennon only for an artwork than the other Beatles. This era of John I'm drawing is during 1968. I think I got the texture of his fur coat right and also his hair. The close-up of his face is alright but I think I can do better with the realism. I made this artwork as a kind of profile of who he is as a person. I plan to add objects like his guitar, piano or a cassette to symbolize him as he used those quite often. Maybe even draw some food like bread since he was known to bake in the '70s.

Like what I did with John, I'm focusing on Paul McCartney this time. I plan to draw portraits of all the Beatles actually (though I'm not done with John's portrait or this one lol, which I probably should focus on one). I haven't done a close-up of his eyes yet nor did I write any quotes related to him. The hair feels flat and the turtleneck feels boring and very un-turtleneck-y. As said in the title, I might redo this because it feels off and I know I could do better. Realistically, I'm gonna go back to finishing up on John then I'll redo this so at least I got something done.

First time using acrylic paint so I just watched a tutorial of how to paint an autumn forest, but I put my own spin to it which is that a based it more on what I remembered in my trip to Nami Island in Korea. Looking at the YouTube video, my version feels more abstract. But that is probably because I lowkey half listened to the video and instead did my own thing for fun. It was a cool brand new experience using paint, since I am accustomed to just using pencils.

If you asked me if there's a meaning to it, I would say a bit since I wanted it to seem like a foggy memory because of its abstract and medium degree of iconicity. It's nothing deep, just me experiementing with paint and having fun. I'll try painting more often for sure.

I was having lunch at the Rockwell Powerplant mall when I passed by this art exhibit on the way to Zara. So, I decided to take some time absorbing the art there and I was suprised to see that some artists I know are being showcased there like glass sculptor Ramon Orlina. I had went to his museum (Museo Orlina) in Tagaytay and learned that even his children are sculptors. I remember that he had been making sculptures out of glass and stones for nearly 50+ years now and I was just surprised to see that he made more this year (because I thought he had taken a hiatus since most of his sculptures are from 90s-00s). Among all the sculptures I saw in Museo Orlina I enjoyed Lost in Shrooms (2023) by Michael Orlina (his son) which is a trio of mushrooms that actually have texture.

As for the Au Féminin exhibit itself, I liked Orlina's sculpture as well as Sunshine by Marge Organo, a glass figure of a balloon dog. Other than that, I liked the colorful paintings of flowers presented there. In fact, I plan to compile all the pictures I have taken in exhibits like these into a single google drive since only 1 picture per upload is allowed here on this website.

I went to a book fair in Alabang recently and one of the books I purchased there was John & Yoko: Imagine which is a sort of biographical account of the recording of John Lennon's album Imagine. Skimming it, I realized it is also a photography book from the people who contributed to its recording like photographer and bassist Klaus Voormann. I chose this page of the book because I really like how raw and candid these were framed (and also since it is film photography). These are the kind of pictures I personally like to take, and wish I could get more into film photography and understand the process of how it is developed, etc.

Before I started reading John & Yoko: Imagine, I finished reading this book. Like Imagine, this is a biography but more on the life of ex-Beatle George Harrison, told through pictures beginning with his upbringing in post-WWII England. For the same reason as Imagine, I like this book since it is not only just iconic pictures of the Beatles but also George Harrison's personal life and his work with them in the studio. Like the pictures shown here, it is them in their natural habitat of a recording studio making the Abbey Road album. It may seem insignificant but (for me) it is as if I am in the room with them seeing them work. I really like that about photography that its like a memory eternally captured and that you can imagine yourself in it.

10/18/25 Letters of Vincent van Gogh

So enough with the photography books and stuff, here is something different. For me, I like jumping from book to book so that I don't get too bored from reading 1 only.

van Gogh is one of my favorite artists not because he is popular but because I like how he paints and that he has many underrated artworks like Skeleton with a Burning Cigarette (1886) or A crab on its back (1888). To know more about him, I got this book and started reading it. Basically, it's also kinda biographical as in his life is told thru letters between him and mostly his brother which is very intimate and deep to read. In a a way, its both wholesome and sad because it talks about the challenges van Gogh went thru in his personal life like loneliness but then it talks about how Theo (his brother) was like his #1 supporter and encouraged him to paint.

There's a lot of sides to it that I have yet to read more about, so I cannot fully create a review of it just yet. But this is just my first impressions of the book.

As I was walking to One Bonifacio High Street to eat dinner at a restaurant there, I came across this artwork at BGC Arts Center. Fortunately, the lighting was dim so I couldn't really appreciate the artwork as it was intended.

Because of that, I just looked it up online and see for myself what it would have looked like in the daytime. So, this artwork has a dual meaning apparently. The first is that it is like the triumph of the filipino spirit and second it is the development of BGC itself. You can say there's also a 3rd meaning which is that it's a respectful homage to the filipino construction workers who built the city.

One of the things I like about art other than creating it is always finding out the context of each piece and the process that allowed them to create it. There's always some history tied into each artwork and I think that's cool and how it still speaks to people years after it was made.

Here's a new one, I made an inlay for my cassette mixtape. I've wanted to make a playlist on cassette for a while now but I don't like how plain the normal inlay is, so I designed one myself.

I went to pinterest first and picked out a picture of the band Red Hot Chili Peppers first and also their logo, then I went to canva and edited it to a square size (I used the instagram post format). After that, I searched online for a way to make the inlay layout (like how to make the size of it fit perfectly into the cassette case) and I found a website that does exactly that:(https://unixispower.gitlab.io/jcard-template/). So, I just typed in the tracklisting of the songs I wanted, picked out the background color, edited the font size and boom I've designed a cover.

For the cassette label itself, I used sticker paper and measured the dimensions of the cassette so that it can fit exactly. Then, I used a cutter to cut out the curved middle part so that the tape can be seen. The only thing left was to write the side number and the songs on it, so I did that with a dual-tip Sharpie (the one that has a thin tip).

Honestly, it didn't turn out too bad. My handwriting and the homemade vibe adds a personal touch to it. The picture and the background color (I think) complement each other. I'll be doing this again for sure, if I still have any blank cassettes.

I found a short article about architecture photography and one of the pictures was a monochrome of looming buildings (Architecture : Mihai Florea). I thought that's simple I could do that. And here, I tried to do that, and since the sky was grey it seemed like an interesting opportunity to try it out since I wanted to make the tall office buildings look scary. One thing I'd try differently next time is color grade or like edit the picture to look better or be black and white like from the article I was inspired by.

One of the first serious portraits I have done in a long time. Initially, I did the sculptural drawing method by simplifying David Bowie into shapes and dividing him into parts. I started off drawing the nose (trying to apply one of the methods I was told to try) as it is the midpoint. and then I did the eyes next as well as the lips. It was difficulty to draw the lips since his mouth is a tiny bit open. The eyes were easier though because his makeup is dark and his eyes are wide open which for me is easier to draw than it being a bit closed. The last parts I did was the lightning bolt, hair, and neckbones. The hair I would say I still need work on since the highlights I drew shouldn't be that bright compared to the reference. To make the portrait interesting, I did some calligraphy by drawing his logo, just freehanded it though.

After drawing David Bowie, I still had some energy left in me to draw so I continued one of the drawings I did last month. The only thing I changed from the original was the eyes section of John since I noticed his nose isn't that high up on his face so I removed a nostril. The new things I added was some sketches of his belongings that he would have had like a vinyl, his guitar, and a cassette tape. I intend to add more stuff to fill up the entire paper like other references such as his piano and the bread he baked during his 5 year hiatus. After adding the references and laying them out, I'll go in with the details.

On the way to a restaurant, I came across this intersection. I decided why not try my hand again at city life photography on my phone naman. My vision was that the 2 buildings are like curtains and in the middle shows an opening to the sky while the sun peeps around the corner of the building. I must say that this was as I had imagined it in my head albeit with some adjustments that I should have made such as that I wished that my camera was more on dead center than a side angle.

For the editing, I literally searched up photo editing websites and came across this: https://pixlr.com/express/. I just experimented with the features like there's filters and whatnot. Originally, the picture was slanted but I used the crop feature to rotate it and remove some parts of it. Then, I used a retro-like filter on it but turned it down as I did not want the colors to be exaggerated. I will search for better photo editing software as this website is (at first impressions) not the best.

In the restaurant, I liked the details of the walls and layout of it as it reminded me of '70s-ish ballroom with the stage and disco ball. I tried capturing the walls accompanying the fancy tables and food (which is in the next entry). After doing so, I used the same website as the previous entry to edit it and bring out the blue hue of the walls using a retro film-like filter (but not to the max of course as it will make the picture look tacky).

Here is something different that isn't architectural photography. In the previous days, I was browsing my Tokyo Hotel Sketch by Kei Endo art book. I was thinking why not try do this in photography, use it as a reference, and then draw that picture as Kei Endo did among the hotels she stayed and dined at. So, that is exactly what I did. Using the portrait setting of my camera on my phone, I snapped a shot of my desert to get a close up shot of the ice cream and the design of the bowl/plate. Also, edited the picture with the website I've used in the past 2 entries and boom this is the output. Next would be trying to use it as a reference and draw it in a sculptural/chiaroscuro method (as I had done with the Apple in VA).

This will be part 1 of 2 in a month-long build (which I will probably finish during the Christmas break).

I have made a Japanese style pagoda base in my Minecraft world. In a nutshell, I had to grind a lot for materials as this is a large house I am making. It just started off with chopping down some trees and going mining for hours to get the spruce wood and dark deepslate bricks I needed for the walls and roof of my house. It felt rather empty so I added a hedge maze surrounding it using leaf blocks to give it some mysteriousness. That wasn't enough though as I think I wanted to make it like an emperor temple kind of thing so I started making a giant wall out of white wool, deepslate bricks, and wood. It takes much time to complete this so I will finish the wall and some details of it to achieve the Meiji reign period of Japan I am looking for.

After all the art books I have read, it was about time that I actually apply some of it or at least study it. So, here comes a bunch of studies on different parts of a human like hair, nose, mouth, eyes, and hands.

For the majority of this, I used Tom Selleck, George Harrison, and Farrah Fawcett as references (I really need to save the pictures I used) as they have wonderful & neat hair. Other than that, I tried to remember how I did Princess Diana's hair for the recent activity we did in VA class. Here, I just sectioned off Fawcett's hair into sections to make it manageable and also so I know how to see it in different/seperate parts. I also studied the movement and direction of hair like in braids and curls. I need to get used to drawing it softly instead of etching it in too sharply.

The highlight here was that I tried different methods of making a sketch for the nose, as in using triangles and circles to simplify it or using prisms and rectangles to see which fits me best. I came to the conclusion that the prior allowed me to get the shape better since it accounted for the circularness of the nostrils compared to the prism style which made the noses too sharp and boxy.

Unfortunately, I could not make this in detail as much as I wanted to since this was an even more complicated anatomy part that I had to study so I am considering to make this a 2-parter. This is just the basics of the hand to condense it down into boxy and cylindrical portions while sectioning it out as I have done with the hair to make it into manageable parts and allow me to focus more on details on the individual fingers. I also tried to follow the joints of the hand so it didn't look weird or limp or dislocated. Not bad for the first time in a long while since I have drawn a hand (because I tend to avoid drawing it since it is confusing and hard to do before).

I've also found this in the storage, along with the Minecraft magazine that gave me inspiration. I just had to admire these pages of my Batman '66 comic since it is so colorful and the character designs are great. My idea is that I should do a reinterpretation or rendition of a famous artwork in this art style combining mine when I have come around to mastering coloring materials like watercolor paint and acrylic or even colored pencils and pens. Right now, I am eyeing American Gothic (1930) by Grant Wood to turn into a Batman comic style artwork. Maybe, I could make the subjects into Batman and the Joker standing in front of a skyline or something like that.

Just as I did with the RHCP mixtape, I have finally found the time to record my Led Zeppelin playist from last year and make it into a cassette mixtape. The main difference here is that I used a bigger font and decided not to include the tracklisting on the cassette tape itself and instead put it on the case. This did not turn out as I planned since it looks too smushed in with the bigger fonts, which makes it difficult to read. For now, I will stick to the original font size I have used in the RHCP mixtape and use a different font color that isn't as dark as the background like in this one.
