Because of North Korea's isolation from the rest of the world, it is extremely underdeveloped, economically and developmentally. North Korea would not be relevant today if it weren't because of their military (the fourth-largest standing military in the world) and their possession of nuclear and chemical weapons. Because of their nuclear power they are still considered equals to other nations. North Korea is still very isolated leaving their people very impoverished, but now hopefully things will start to improve.

Once this peninsula was divided, the Soviet Union and the United States each occupied a portion making the boundary along the 38th parallel. In 1950 the Korean War happened. North Korea invaded and attacked South Korea in hopes of being able to unify again and rule it under communism. The United States backed up South Korea in order to help contain communism. Technically, there were no "winners" in this war, but Korea never unified again.

The U.S has backed up South Korea since the Korean War and will probably continue to be a helping hand in the future considering we still have U.S troops in South Korea.

North Korea has been isolated from everyone for so long that the only way to fix things is to find a leader that will benefit not only them but also be beneficial when it comes to getting help from other countries. North Korea is far behind developmentally, but I'm sure when they enter an international system I think they will grow and things will change for the better. Things with North Korea are already starting to change, for example, President Trump was the FIRST U.S President to meet a North Korean leader and be able to walk on their soil.
