The giving tree is about a tree and a little boy who form a close friendship. They love each other very much, and the tree would do anything to make sure he was happy. As the boy begins to get older he spends less time with the tree, that is until he needs something. The tree gets sad and lonely and in order to keep the little boy from staying away forever she gives him whatever he asks for. By the end of the story the tree is nothing more than a stump, after giving everything she had to the boy. At the end the tree finally gets what she truly desires- which is for the boy to spend time with her again.

The main theme expressed throughout the story is selflessness vs selfishness, and self-sacrifice vs. greed. Throughout the story the boy asks for everything he could ever want and does not stop to think about the consequences. The tree on the other hand give the boy everything he asks for even though the only things she can give him is parts of herself. She does this to make the boy happy even though he does seem to be able to gain true happiness until the very end of the story. Throughout the story the boy does not realize what he is doing to the tree by asking for so much and does not stop to think about what he is doing to her, instead he keeps coming back to ask for more, and while the tree does not have much she still gives him everything.

Lessons in the Giving Tree

The main lesson found throughout the story is that you should never take advantage of someone else, nor should you let yourself be used. The tree had an unconditional type of love for the boy, and this made her blind to that pain. The tree was giving the boy everything she had until she was nothing and did not realize she was unhappy because she was making the boy happy. The boy wanted something, and took without realizing that he was hurting the one thing that loved him the most. Overall I believe the story was trying to tell you that it is important to make sure that your actions are not taking advantage of someone else, just because you want something does not mean that you should always take it when being offered. It is also important to make sure you are taking care of yourself and that you are not letting yourself be used by someone that is giving nothing in return.
