Many of his childhood friends who were drafted to fight in Vietnam lost their lives, and that has been very difficult for him to live through even 50 years later. On November 5, 2009, the construction company my dad worked at at the time was working on a building at the military base in Fort Hood, Texas. My dad was at the military base that day. As he was driving home that afternoon, he learned of the news that a mass shooting that killed 13 innocent people had taken place shortly after he had left.
