Survivor guilt is similar to PTSD; it is basically the feelings of guilt that those who have survived a deadly or traumatic event experience. From this resource: "Survivor’s guilt, commonly associated with PTSD, is when a person feels guilty because they survived a life-threatening event that others did not survive. When misfortune strikes us, and we remain unscathed, we may be grateful. However, we also may feel a sense of guilt, questioning, “Why not me?” The individual feels as if their survival is due to them doing something wrong and that somehow they should have prevented the tragedy from occurring. Plane crashes or deaths among military personnel while deployed are common triggers for survivor’s guilt, but it can also be experienced as a result of other less apparent occurrences" (Fort Behavioral Health).

While I was reading Frankenstein, I associated Victor's feelings of guilt that he experienced throughout the book to the feelings of two very important men in my life. Both my grandfather and my father have experienced feelings of survivor guilt that affect them every single day.

In 1970, my grandfather was a cartographer during the Vietnam War. Many of his childhood friends who were drafted to fight in Vietnam lost their lives, and that has been very difficult for him to live through even 50 years later. On November 5, 2009, the construction company my dad worked at at the time was working on a building at the military base in Fort Hood, Texas. My dad was at the military base that day. As he was driving home that afternoon, he learned of the news that a mass shooting that killed 13 innocent people had taken place shortly after he had left. These two men are two of the most important people in my life, and the feelings they felt after these events have definitely shaped their lives.
