Conrad was interrogating Alex and was asking what he was here for and who he was and Alex was saying that he is innocent so, a machine started and Alex found out he was in a sugar factory and so there was a machine that was trying to kill Alex. Finally Alex cracked but Conrad still tried to kill him but was knocked out by someone and that someone is the Russian general. Using the word chandelier adds a positive and sophisticated mood to this section of the story.
The author used the phrase fancy chandelier so we can learn how Esperanza's great-grandfather views her great-grandmother. We learn that he loved her and really wanted to marry her. He values her and sees her as a delicate, elegant, desirable woman. The message would have been significantly different if the author said, “As if she were a sack of potatoes.”
