To better understand the changing media landscape, I spoke to both Harlow and Spehar.

On misinformation

Harlow: Misinformation is not something that is unique to social media. Social media absolutely amplified it. We see misinformation on traditional mainstream media as well.

Holding people who are doing journalism on social media to different standards than traditional journalists is a bad habit. All it's going to do is create deeper divides between journalists and influencers.

Yes, we have this huge problem with disinformation and misinformation, that's why I talk about the importance of media literacy. We need to really make sure that consumers can understand how to verify information and not just believe something because it fits within what they already believe to be reality.

Il faut déjà se focaliser sur UN ASPECT des réseaux.

Puis, trouver une problématique.

Ton document peut en fait t'aider (article de Time magazine) car l'article parle de comment les jeunes s’organisent collectivement et s’entraident (il faudra donc donner des exemples) face aux effets négatifs des réseaux sociaux.

Cet aspect est intéressant, ça pourrait t'amener vers la formulation d'une problématique plus précise (si ça t'intéresse bien sûr).

Mais attention 2022 c'était il y a 4 ans déjà, les réseaux changent tellement vite que des documents plus récents sontnécessaires en complément. On a besoin d'un sujet d'ACTUALITE. Pose-toi la question : de quoi parle t'on en ce moment par rapport aux réseaux. Regarde ce qui se passe dans la presse récemment, tu trouveras.

Reformuler : on en a discuté, parler des armes à feu aux USA est un sujet trop vaste : tu te concentres donc sur firearms in US SCHOOLS.

Reformuler: je crois qu'on avait discuté de " Are American students ever safe in a country full of guns?"

...mais, avec le recul, je me rends compte que c'est un peu trop engagé (la réponse est trop attendue : "non"). Or, on cherche à apporter des éléments de réponse plus nuancés. "How does gun violence impact school life in the United States?" ou "Why is gun violence in American schools still a major issue today?" sont des options peut-être plus ouvertes.

Pour le choix des docs, ce n'est pas encore conclusif...

Ne te précipite pas: la première étape est déjà de lire le maximum d'articles et de vidéos sur le sujet : tu pourras identifier les enjeux clés qui reviennent souvent.

Par exemple: la question d'armer les profs, ou de la sécurité, ou des fusillades récentes, la question de la loi, les réactions politiques à l'ère Trump...

Si tu cherches dans les news via mots clés (guns, gun control, guns at school, school shooting... ) tu trouveras!!

Conseils :

En plus des articles de presse, un dessin de presse (political cartoon) sur le sujet pourrait être utile par exemple.

Il y a aussi beaucoup d'humouristes (stand up comedians) qui traitent du sujet et apportent un point de vue critique (tu ne peux pas inclure de vidéos, mais tu peux très bien choisir une citation tirée d'une vidéo !)

Une fois que tu as identifié les idées principales/enjeux : identifier 2 grandes parties qui regroupent les 2 idées majeures.

Attention (j'anticipe), est-ce que tu es sure que tu ne dépasseras pas 5 minutes ? (gestion du temps) : j'ai l'impression que tu as plein de choses à dire, mais tu ne pourras pas TOUT dire en 5 minutes : choisis des ressources percutantes pour démontrer que tu as saisis les ENJEUX PRINCIPAUX

Attention à ne pas faire un exposé sur le fentanyl (toutes tes recherches apportent des connaissances solides pour la partie questions, mais pendant ton oral tu dois surtout montrer ce que cette crise révèle (enjeux). Problématiser le sujet, en somme.

Ne pas oublier que ton oral doit se baser sur tes docs, ils doivent donc amener un apport critique. (Ne pas juste nous expliquer ce qu'est le fentanyl et d'où cela vient : ce serait un 20/20 si c'était un exposé certes, mais attention c'est un oral qui doit explorer les problématiques sociétales).

Tu peux très bien rester focalisé sur la mobilisation par les jeunes eux mêmes, mais dans ce cas tes 2 autres docs doivent nous apporter des infos sur ce même aspect et se concentrer sur les différents types d'actions de la part de la jeunesse .

I chose this topic because I recently read La Fête à Venise, which explores the relationship between culture, luxury, and elite society. It made me reflect on the contemporary art world, especially in the United States, where art is increasingly connected to money, prestige, and financial power.

To explore this question, I selected three documents.

The first document is a newspaper article from The New York Times entitled “In a $2.2 Billion Week, the Art Market Finds Its Footing”, published in 2025. It focuses on record-breaking art auctions in New York.

The second document is an abridged academic article about Jeff Koons entitled “A More Public Arena: Jeff Koons’ Reinvention in the Midst of Reaganism”, published in the journal Art History in 2020. It analyzes the relationship between contemporary art, luxury, and capitalism.

The third document is an official press release from Sotheby’s, titled “Sotheby’s 2019 Auctions Achieve $4.8 Billion Worldwide”, which presents the results of global art auctions and illustrates the scale of the contemporary art market.

These documents raise the following question:

To what extent has capitalism transformed art from a cultural expression into a financial commodity in the United States?

First, I will explain how contemporary art became part of a financial and luxury market. Then, I will show how capitalism influences artists and artistic creation today. Finally, I will discuss whether art can still preserve its cultural value.

I. Contemporary art as a financial and luxury market

First of all, the New York Times article illustrates the extreme financialization of the contemporary art market today.

According to the article, art auctions in New York generated billions of dollars in only one week, and some artworks were sold for hundreds of millions of dollars.

This demonstrates that art is increasingly treated as an investment asset rather than only a cultural object.

Wealthy collectors often buy artworks not only for artistic reasons, but also for prestige, speculation, and financial profit.

Moreover, the Sotheby’s press release reinforces this idea. It states that Sotheby’s achieved approximately $4.8 billion in global sales in 2019, showing the massive scale of the international art market and its integration into global capitalism.

Therefore, art has progressively become part of a global luxury market dominated by wealthy elites.

II. The influence of capitalism on artists and artistic creation

However, capitalism does not only influence the price of art: it also influences artistic creation itself.

The second document about Jeff Koons perfectly illustrates this phenomenon.

According to the article, Koons became a symbol of the commercialization and commodification of contemporary art.

His artworks are inspired by consumer culture and luxury objects, and they are often sold for extremely high prices.

For example, his famous sculpture Balloon Dog became one of the most expensive artworks ever sold by a living artist.

The article also explains that some critics believe Koons fully operates within and benefits from the capitalist art market rather than criticizing it.

Therefore, contemporary art often exists in a contradiction between artistic creativity and commercial logic.

III. Can art still preserve its cultural value?

Nevertheless, art cannot simply be reduced to money and business.

Many contemporary artists still use art as a form of political expression or social criticism.

Museums, public exhibitions, and alternative forms of art continue to make culture accessible to a wider audience.

Moreover, some artists still try to defend artistic freedom and creativity against excessive commercialization.

Therefore, despite financialization and commercialization, art still remains an important form of creativity, emotion, and cultural expression.

Conclusion

To conclude, capitalism has deeply transformed the contemporary American art world.

Today, art is increasingly connected to luxury, speculation, media visibility, and financial profit, as shown by the New York Times article and the Sotheby’s press release.

Moreover, the example of Jeff Koons demonstrates that capitalism now influences not only the art market but also artistic creation itself.

However, art still remains a powerful form of cultural expression and social criticism.

In my opinion, the main challenge today is to preserve the cultural value of art in a society increasingly dominated by money and commercialization.

Music is more than just art; it is a mean of protest. Since the 1960s, protest songs have helped people fight for their rights and change society.

We wonder: how do protest songs still have the power to create change today with social media?

First, I will talk about the history of protest music. Next, I would talk about the modern impact of celebrities and the internet.

Partie 1 :

To begin with, music has a long history as a political movement. According to the first document, Freedom songs played an essential role during the Civil Rights Movement in the United States.

These songs were used to strengthen courage and create a sense of belonging. As we can see in the second document, music has a social power. It transforms individuals into a community. In the past, when people were marching in the streets, singing together was a way to communicate a message without confrontation.

Even today, historical anthems are still used. For example, Kendrick Lamar’s song Alright has become a modern anthem for the Black Lives Matter movement, showing that the tradition of protest music is still alive.

PART 2:

Next, I would like to talk about how celebrities and the Internet have changed everything.

Today, music spreads much faster. In the third document, we see that a star like Beyoncé can use the Super Bowl to send a political message to millions of people. Thanks to social media, a performance or a song can go viral in a few seconds.

The Internet allows protest songs to reach a wider and younger audience. As mentioned in the documents, music makes political causes emotionally engaging. Even if you are not in the street, you can participate in the movement by sharing the song on social media. Celebrities use their star power to challenge social norms and influence public opinion.

Conclusion:

To conclude, I believe that protest songs are still very powerful.

In the history of protest, music was a way to unite people. Now, with celebrities and the Internet, the message becomes global. Social media is an important tool to start political debates and inspire the next generation.
