Based on what you have learned so far in class and/or from your own life experiences, what do you think it means to be a Treaty person here in Canada? What do you think are some of our responsibilities as Treaty people?

I think being a treaty person simply means to know that we signed and honored an official contract to own our portion of land in what is now called Canada and we should remember this land simply isn't given to us for free and that its a privilege to be standing anywhere we are right now on this land. I think some of our responsibilities as treaty people are to respect and honor the land we live on, know about the 4 different types of treaties (Modern, Numbered, Peace and Friendship, Douglas and Historic) and to understand handshake deals AKA contracts are an important part in order for peace to be done and have a fair agreement and commitment on both sides in order for exciting and important stuff such as living on Canada to happen.

For me, knowledge is the most important step towards becoming a Treaty person. It would be impossible to understand and know your role without learning the truth in the past. I think that my role changes now that I have all these information, understood and acknowledge the truth. I can help in my own simple way by educating my family and others and spreading awareness about Indigenous peoples. This knowledge must be shared as we walk towards truth and reconciliation. - Everett

As an international student from India in Canada, being a Treaty person means recognizing and respecting the treaties and Indigenous rights. Responsibilities include cultural sensitivity, education, support for Indigenous initiatives, advocacy for Indigenous rights, being an ally against discrimination, and contributing to reconciliation and environmental stewardship. It's a way to show respect and solidarity with the Indigenous peoples of the land you're living in. As I mentioned in my some assignments, as an international student, I got a lot from this country, but in return, it is my obligation to pay that off.

Living in Canada as a Non-Indigenous person, I think it is essential for citizens to have knowledge on the land they live on. My family settled on this land roughly 50 years ago, and we never have had conversations of the Indigenous people and Canada's history. I think when living in a country you must know if there are treaties and agreements between people. We have a responsibility to live on this land according to the treaty, it's a law. While it's a legal obligation it is also a human obligation to be respectful to those before us and living with us right now. There should be mandatory Indigenous education for those settling in Canada, whether that be through the news or in other ways. All in all we need to have knowledge on the Treaty land we live on. -Gursimrans

In my opinion, learning about Indigenous traditions and actively engaging in the process of reconciliation in order to contribute to a future that is more inclusive and harmonious that aligns with the fundamental tenets of these earlier treaties.

- Daniella Nuevos

In this case, we have the obligation and responsibility to maintain good relations with the indigenous peoples and respect their sovereignty and culture. Of course, we can also take the initiative to understand their culture and participate in relevant events. This can help the other party understand our thoughts better than verbal words.

The freedom to live in a nation where Indigenous and non-Indigenous people coexist while respecting one another's cultures, customs, and rights is a privilege and a responsibility that comes with being a Treaty person in Canada. The past agreements made it possible for me to live in a peaceful and welcoming community where everyone can grow and make use of the abundant riches this land has to offer. Being a Treaty person is not just about enjoying freedoms and rights, but it also means that a Treaty person like me has a shared responsibility for the preservation of culture, the health of the environment, and the development of a more diverse and peaceful society. I have the responsibility to preserve and take care of the environment in order to make sure that it continues to be a source of inspiration and food for future generations. In addition, becoming a Treaty person includes actively addressing historical injustices and supporting efforts towards reconciliation. As a start, I have to learn and understand the history of this land so that I can help and support the reconciliation process.

- Mercedes Palomo
