However, I think that if the narrator was Ratika I would get to relate to the book a little better because me and Ratika are both straight females who are still fighting for gay rights. What do we learn?- The author used the phrase fancy chandelier so we can learn how Esperanza's great-grandfather views her great-grandmother. We learn that he loved her and really wanted to marry her. He values her and sees her as a delicate, elegant, desirable woman. The message would have been significantly different if the author said, “As if she were a sack of potatoes.”
