Katniss Everdeen

Katniss Everdeen is a fictional character who embodies the principle of self-reliance. Throughout the "Hunger Games" series, Everdeen constantly displays characteristics of independence, continuously making decisions that she believes to be correct without influence from others. Her survival of the Hunger Games can ultimately be attributed to her self-reliant nature. Everdeen most closely represents the quote, "Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members", as the society Everdeen lives in quite literally conspires against members of her society. Despite the many attempts against Everdeen that are used to result in her downfall, Everdeen ultimately prevails due to her own self-reliant traits.

I'm Still Standing - Elton John

"I'm Still Standing", written by Elton John in 1983, is the embodiment of self-reliance. In "Self-Reliance", Ralph Waldo Emerson states that "There is a time in every man's education that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion...". The song "I'm Still Standing" parallels this quote as Elton John states, "And if you need to know while I'm still standin'
You just fade away." These two quotes are parallels because Elton John discusses his strength due to his implied antagonist fading away- in short, no longer affecting him. Ralph Waldo Emerson's quote is similar in that it discusses the importance of admonishing feelings such as envy, imitation, etc. He implies the importance of not allowing others to have such an extreme effect on one's personhood.

Van Gogh was another great thinker who was misunderstood. Van Gogh spent most of his final years in a mental hospital, and supposedly died due to suicide. During his time as a painter, his artwork was not appreciated on a large scale, and he tended to sell his artworks for cheap. It wasn't until after he had died and his sister in-law published his works that he began to receive recognition for his artistic innovation and ability.

The yellow umbrella stands out from the black umbrellas, creating a metaphor that connects to the idea of nonconformity, an important ideology to live by according to Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Since Chris is by himself and has no one else to rely on, he must focus on his own abilities. Chris commonly succeeded in being self-reliant, as he survived several tumultuous escapades before eventually succumbing to the harsh conditions of the Alaskan mountains.
