The society surrounding Max greatly induces the plot of the novel. In the beginning of the story, a Berg (big ship) comes with darts filled with a contagious virus and starts to inject the survivors of the sun flares. Turns out, the virus killed the first person instantly, then the next one within one second, and so on. Eventually, it took a couple months for someone to get executed from the deadly virus. After they escaped the infected neighborhood, Alec and Mark got captured trying to explore and spy on the tribe that was making a lot of noise. Not so long after, a wildfire started, and Alec stubbornly ran through it, and Mark did the same, When they escaped, they discovered that their friends, Trina, Lana, and Deedee, weren't there, either. Shortly after that, Alec and Mark followed a Berg into an underground bunker. There, they heard a man named Bruce talk about how to fix the virus, like a cure, which they now named, "the Flare". Suddenly, Bruce heard Mark and Alec spying on them and told his men to attack them. Then, after they ran away but were still being chased, Ale jumped into a Berg and started to lift off, while Mark fought off everyone who was jumping onto the ship. After a lot of fighting, Alec and Mark looked for their friends. Eventually, Alec spotted them in a rusty, burnt neighborhood that was crawling with infected people, now called "Cranks". The adventurers grabbed their Transvices, which is a heavy gun that could dissolve people into thin air, and set off to look for their friends. After the first few houses, they met a few Cranks who weren't that friendly, but that's when they found Lana. She was beaten up with hair pulled out, blood everywhere, and bruised head to toe. Suddenly, someone stabbed her with a knife, so Mark tackled him, took the knife, and ended his life. Sadly, they had to put Lana out of her misery and dissolve her. Next is when they found Lana and Deedee, also covered in bruises like spots on a cheetah. After a long fight and a lot of dissolving, they got their friends out of the dreadful place, only to find that Trina lost her memory. The conflict is resolved when the group drops off Deedee at the Flat Trans, which is a portal to the PFC. Mark gave her a note telling the people who find her that she is immune to the Flare and to use her.

The internal conflict happening within Max's brain also impacts the plot with much value. Every night, he has flashbacks of how the sun flares started, which paralyzed him whenever he thought about it. He would wake up constantly throughout the whole night, filled with anxiety. One time when he just got out of a forest fire, him and Alec returned to their camping grounds, only to find that Trina, Lana, and Deedee were missing. When Alec finally found a trail, it was a leaf that had been stepped on, it had blood on it. That's when Max starts to freak out and get worried. His mind kept bringing him down throughout the whole story, freaking out and feeling anxious. The most severe part of the whole internal conflict is when Trina loses her memory. Mark's heart shatters into a billion little pieces when she says the words, "Who are you?" He keeps stressing throughout the whole rest of the plot, until she finally gets her memory back at the very end of the story.

"We've got friends in this house," Mark added, "And we're not leaving without them" (Dashner 268). I think this quote is sufficient because it shows how much Mark changed throughout the story. From being a scared wimpy kid, to a strong, independent individual, and he would do anything for his friends.

I think the lesson Mark learned is to never give up on friends, no matter the circumstances. This is proven when Mark says the quote I exemplified and when Alec said to just rest, Mark didn't want to. He wanted to go out and find his friends.

I can relate to Mark in this story because I once lost my mom in a CVS store and I would do anything to find her. Just as he was willing to ask anybody for help, I would go and ask the managers if they had seen my mom. Just as he would look everywhere, I would too.

Mark, who is a teenager that wants everything to go his way and he is also in love with Trina, wanted to see who kept torturing them with darts filled with a deadly virus and wiping out the population like little ants. As they were pursuing, they faced many conflicts on their treacherous journey, such as running into people infected with the virus, capturing Mark and Alec, but their friends, Trina, Lana and Deedee, were also kidnapped in the process. After a long month or so, Mark and Alec found Lana, only to discover that she was all beaten up, hair pulled out, covered in blood, and bruises head to toe. Suddenly, an infected person, also called Cranks, impaled her with a knife, so Alec had to put her out of her misery. Not long after, they found Trina and Deedee surrounded by Cranks who had lost their mind. Unfortunately, Trina was sick and had lost her memory. Deedee was also in a bad condition, but Mark and Alec rescued them after a long battle with the Cranks. Sadly, after they left, Alec got the virus, known as the Flare, but he was able to keep control for a while. Finally, they dropped off Deedee at a portal called the Flat Trans, and left a note in her hand saying that she's immune to the Flare and to use her.

I think that shackles represent the Kill Order well because of the hardships the main character, Mark, has to face throughout the plot. He has to face getting captured, losing his friends, going into an underground bunker to try to find them, and finding them in a village swarming with Cranks.
