Right after all the students arrived at the cafe, Prof asked us to take a walk around the KICT compound, specifically at the roundabout. There, he explains to us the introduction to Sustainable Development. He explains to us the definition of Sustainable Development. He mentions that Sustainable development is a concept that refers to the idea of meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This involves balancing economic, social, and environmental considerations in order to ensure that development is not only economically viable but also socially and environmentally sustainable. He also asks us if we can think of any development for benefit of IIUM in the future. It totally open my eyes as there are actually a lot of things than can be developed in IIUM. plus, Prof also stated that the concept of sustainability is closely related to sustainable development, and refers to the idea of maintaining or preserving the natural systems and resources that support life on earth. This includes things like clean air, water, and soil, as well as biodiversity and ecosystem services. To be sustainable, a system or resource must be able to function indefinitely without being depleted or degraded.

Later on, before the class ended, we were introduced to the SDG project which is The M Kitchen. It is built to help those in need by giving food to them according to a schedule. I totally agree with this project as it is totally beneficial to those in need of food supply. We take some pictures together before the class ended and it was a great moment.

The program began at 8.30 a.m. and ended at 1.00 p.m. at IIUM's Senate Hall. Prof Suhami asked us to attend only one hour of the talk, beginning at 10 a.m. and ending at 11 a.m.

We were all set to a like of parliamentary meeting-setting during the discussion. It was my first time in the hall, and seeing a parliamentary debate look-alike with my own eyes piqued my interest. After each session, they gave everyone a Kahoot Quiz to answer based on the topics covered, such as the importance of taking Takaful, saving for post-retirement life, and how Takaful protects us. Winners will receive e-wallets as prizes. However, before we left, we were given door gifts and breakfast provided by EPF.

Then, we listen to a recorded lecture provided by Prof for the remaining one hour to meet the class hours. It was about Islam and Sustainable Development.  It intrigued me how closely related these two aspects are. For example, Islam teaches the importance of conserving natural resources and using them wisely and efficiently. This includes things like water, which is a scarce resource in many parts of the world and is considered a gift from God in Islam. Islam also emphasizes the importance of preserving the natural environment and protecting it from pollution and degradation. all of this is aligned with Sustainable Development.

Both the maqasid al-shari'ah and the SDGs seek to address the challenges facing humanity and the planet and to find ways to address these challenges in a way that is consistent with core values and principles.


For example, It can be seen that both the maqasid al-shari'ah and the SDGs recognize the importance of preserving the natural order and protecting the environment. This is reflected in the maqasid al-shari'ah principle of preserving the natural order, as well as in several of the SDGs, including SDG 13 (climate action), SDG 14 (life below water), and SDG 15 (life on land).


In addition, both the maqasid al-shari'ah and the SDGs place a strong emphasis on social justice and the promotion of equitable and inclusive societies. This is reflected in the maqasid al-shari'ah principles of preserving religion, life, family, property, reason, and human dignity, as well as in several of the SDGs, including SDG 1 (no poverty), SDG 2 (zero hunger), and SDG 10 (reduced inequalities).


Overall, the relationship between the maqasid al-shari'ah and the SDGs can be seen in the shared commitment to creating a more just, equitable, and sustainable world for all people and the planet.

According to g to the lecture, one of the key international frameworks for sustainable development is the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015. This agenda consists of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure peace and prosperity for all. The SDGs cover a wide range of issues related to sustainable development, including poverty, inequality, health, education, gender equality, climate change, and environmental degradation.


In addition to the SDGs, there are several other important international frameworks for sustainable development, including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). These agreements set out specific targets and commitments to address specific environmental and development challenges, and are designed to be integrated with and complementary to the SDGs.

This includes not only economic prosperity, but also social and environmental well-being, and requires a balance between economic, social, and environmental considerations.

In addition, this topic mentions there are many perspectives regarding the concept of Sejahtera and we as responsible citizens should respect every perspective without downgrading other opinions. All in all, we can apply this Sejahtera concept in daily life. As centers of learning and research, universities have the ability to generate new knowledge and educate and train the next generation of leaders. By conducting research, educating and training the next generation, and engaging with the community, universities can make a significant contribution to creating a more sustainable and equitable future for all.      

Plus, from this topic, we know that universities play an important role to overcome crises. Furthermore, these challenges are separated into three aspects which are Social, Economic, and Environment aspect. For me, it is very interesting new things like this as it can open our minds to the condition of our environment.

Challenges that can be seen from the Social aspect are poverty and inequality, which can undermine social and economic stability and hinder progress toward sustainable development. On the other hand, from an Economic aspect it can be seen that in some parts of the world, access to resources such as water, land, and energy is limited, which can pose a challenge to sustainable development. This can be especially true in areas that are prone to drought, conflict, or other forms of disruption. Lastly, from the Environment aspect, we can see that environmental degradation, including issues like deforestation, soil erosion, and pollution, can also pose a major challenge to sustainable development. In regard to the Sustainable Development Goals, the roles were classified into three institutions which are Global & National Institutions, Local Institutions, and Groups and Individuals. 


Some of the specific roles that global and national institutions can play in achieving the SDGs include:

  1. Setting policies and standards: Setting policies and standards that support the achievement of the SDGs. This can include things like setting targets and goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and protecting the environment from pollution and degradation.
  2. Providing funding and resources: Providing funding and resources to support the achievement of the SDGs. This can include things like providing financial support to countries and organizations working to achieve the SDGs.


Some of the specific roles that local institutions can play in achieving the SDGs include:

  1. Implementing policies and programs: Implementing policies and programs that support the achievement of the SDGs. This can include things like developing and implementing local sustainability plans, supporting the transition to renewable energy sources, and promoting sustainable consumption and production practices.
  2. Engaging with the community: Engaging with the community on issues related to the SDGs. This can involve things like organizing public meetings, workshops, and other events to raise awareness.

Social sciences: The social sciences, including fields such as economics, sociology, and political science, can contribute to sustainable development through research on topics such as poverty, inequality, and social justice.
