As an RSP K-2nd teacher, my students struggle with writing. Therefore, I came up with an emoji journal for everyone to write on the same page on the same day. Each day, they will draw on how they feel instead of writing. They may write if they choose to, but this is a time for them to reflect on how they feel and however they feel, share it in the way they feel most comfortable. Then we discuss why they are feeling that way. The kids love this and if I forget about it, they'll remind me at the beginning of the class. I have been doing this for 2 months now and they have really found it as a great resource to see their fellow classmates all feel differently each day and that is okay. I also have a list of youtube stories that talk about the various SEL emotions and has been a great resource. We will watch a video and then have a discussion about tit. Some will have worksheets with them, if not I will create an activity to go with it.

In short, preparing them to become good adults.
Currently, my school implements two curricula (activities and PDs) to help with teaching students some of the concepts under SEL.

I feel that is one of the most important components in a student's learning journey. Students need to have a stable social and emotional state in order to start learning. I believe that creating a safe learning environment for a student requires to support their social and emotional well being. I appreciate that our school encourages teachers to provide social and emotional support to our students. In addition, checking on our students' social and emotional state helps create those relationships/connections between student and teacher. These relationships/connections make a difference when it comes to dealing with students' behaviors.

This means that a student can recognize the emotion they are feeling. Once a student can recognize their emotion, then we can teach students how to regulate their emotions with a variety of strategies. For some of my students, when they are feeling bad we talk about the challenging feeling they feel. We also reflect on what happened and good things that have happened throughout the day.

Here is a link to a valuable resource of SEL activities. https://www.understood.org/articles/en/social-emotional-activities-for-children?_sp=2bb908ba-1d0c-49ba-8ce5-416bc186b245.1647907544980

Having students discuss a wide range of emotions other than angry or happy is crucial to the development of the student holistically. I currently have a feelings journal. I have my students practice journal writing because it is a healthy skill to develop. In addition we have DIS counselors at our school that work with students who struggle navigating their emotions.

When I think of social emotional learning I think of a curriculum that is culturally aware, of a class room that is open, calming and welcoming. Not with student work EVERYWHERE, but celebrated throughout. When I think of social emotional learning I (as a student) can close my eyes and enter a space at any given time that allows me to reference a soothing voice from my classmates , teacher or administrators helping me not only understand myself better but understand others when I am my most angry (a thousand miles in their shoes). Social emotional learning to me as a teacher makes me think of practicing the constant reminder of forgiveness. I can’t expect what I don’t give. I see a classroom where restorative justice is the word of EVERYDAY! Where not just posters of “You can do it!” are up, but a positive expectation of success is commanded by all. Where I am not the only counselor with wisdom in the room. (Out of the mouths of babes) A space where all are welcome to share, give and take leaving positively reinforced to face their days ahead. But that is just the space. The culturally aware curriculum helps them understand themselves by understanding others and realizing they are not alone. We are not alone.

Natalie Neimann~when I think of SEL in the classroom it brings me back to when the pandemic first started. It became quite evident, literally overnight, how important it was to teach this skill to our students. For me, SEL is about self-management. How can I teach my students to check in with themselves, express what they are feeling, and finally manage their feeling(s). It is also important to cultivate a classroom environment where appropriately expressing ones feelings is not only encouraged but fostered in the classroom. In my classroom, we do daily check-ins, my students go to groups with our site counsellor, and I collaborate with staff for SEL lessons. One of my mentor teachers told me that teaching SEL to students is just as important than math and ELA because it gives our students tools for the rest of their life. I only wish that I had SEL taught to me and encouraged when I was a student as I feel it would have helped with my anxiety. I appreciate the importance educators and administrators are shedding on SEL instruction in the classroom. This is a positive direction for education.

It will help with sympathy and empathy for others, which helps to maintain healthy and positive relationship. This also, helps with the process of learning life skills and it helps with dealing with oneself, others and relationships. The way I use it in my class is by playing some soothing music and having my students breath in an out. The other way I support them is by having a brain break in between lessons.

Hopefully, SEL will encourage students to make positive choices and build healthy relationships. It is also important in helping students learn the skills they need to be productive and successful humans. Providing students with the necessary coping mechanisms through social emotional learning may help reduce anxiety and allow students to be in a good head (and heart) space and be ready to learn.

I LOVE that there are teachers who are considering this aspect of their students, and I think it has a lot to do with new teachers are of a generation that is very aware of mental health and putting more into that aspect of our lives than previous generations. In my classroom, I have Wellness Wednesdays where my students come into class, only half the lights are on, they scan a QR code to a mental health check in on google forms, and we listen to some calming music before we get into the class material. During the chill time, I read the surveys as they are submitted and make note of any students I want to check in with based off of their answers before the period is over.

Social emotional learning is a strategy that helps students be aware of their emotions. By being aware of their emotions, students are able to react better and also understand the things that can trigger them. I believe social emotional learning is something that all students will benefit from, but especially high school students. As teens, high school learners are experiencing both physical and emotional changes, sometimes these changes can be too much and cause students to react impulsively and or destructively. As a 9th grade RSP teacher, I have witness a handful of students react negatively because they don't know how to direct their emotions. I have made it a priority to check-in with my students during my prep period. During these check-ins we talk about things that are going good both at school and in their personal lives. We also talk about any concerns that they may have, and how I can help navigate those issues. Some students struggle with sharing verbally, but are welcome to write something down. I believe these check-ins help built relationships with students and allows them to feel comfortable with sharing their emotions/feelings.

I think it is important that students also know the importance of being able to express their emotions and actually feel things. I think there was such a strong stigma around being 'weak' if you showed emotions, but teaching students the importance of it is vital-especially after the pandemic. I truly love being able to check in with my students, or let them express how the feel about things whether its through discussions, drawings, or any other activities they like to do.

Social Emotional Learning means taking the time to reflect on emotions and social situations. It involves learning how to maintain positive relationships and how to manage our emotions. With my students, I teach them SEL skills. I give them examples of situations and we have conversations about how they would respond. I also ask them to try and empathize with the person in the situation. I use this strategy when a student is upset with another student. I have seen that it really helps the students involved feel heard. It also helps decrease the behavior.

SEL is a crucial component of school. If students social-emotional needs aren't being met, they will not be able to learn. All children need guidance and support in developing their social-emotional understanding and skills, but this is especially important for students with disabilities.

At my school, many of my students have counseling services and I regularly touch base with their counselors about how they're doing, issues I see arise that I want the counselor aware of, and strategies we can utilize with a student. We also have a Tier 2 SEL team who create resources and activities for classroom teachers and do individual check-ins or small social groups for students. I have an SEL curriculum and binders of social stories I can use for students as needed. Because I work with K-4, I keep the same students for years and get to develop strong relationships with them. This allows me to step in when I see them having a tough time, or look for resources to help them navigate a new social or emotional experience. My classroom has a sensory/calm down space with weighted blankets, soft lighting, and comfortable pillows. I also have a wall filled with the zones of regulation, breathing techniques, and visuals of calm down strategies for students to use with or without support as needed. That said, I would like to have more proactive and systematic activities or materials to use with my students in a small group setting.
