Leadership skills are something that all of us possess or can learn, but not all of us can access these skills in an effective way to become great leaders. John J. Pershing was and is considered a great leader and is thought to be the greatest general in World War I. The accomplishments and failures of a great leader can help influence the way future leaders conduct themselves. World War II generals such as George C. Marshalls, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar Bradley and George S. Patton cite John J. Pershing as a mentor, which goes to show you the power of his influence (National WWI Museum and Memorial, n.d.). Great leaders give hope to future generations and allows them to use their knowledge to accomplish great feats of their own. General John J. Pershing left a legacy behind by being given the highest rank in the United States Army at the time and rightfully so as his efforts helped turn the tide in battle. Being a leader in the United States Army is no simple task, but General John J. Pershing succeeded at taking nothing and turning it into something.

General John J. Pershing was appointed the commander of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF), which helped him receive the title "General of the Armies" and it was well deserved. General Pershing made the nearly impossible possible by transforming millions of ill prepared, inexperienced soldiers into a well trained military fighting force (History.com Editors, 2009). Pershing's American Expeditionary Force was so good under his leadership that their presence on the battlefield made an immediate impact. It took General Pershing around 18 months to whip his men into shape and prepare them for the great accomplishments that they eventually had. During this time the success of the American Expeditionary Force was being recognized which caused the French and British to want an integration of their forces, but of course General Pershing opposed this (Adhikari, 2021). General Pershing went on to crush the German resistance and win many battles, but he eventually integrated his single unit into the Allied forces which helped them win the war.

Analysis: Why studying the leader is important today?

Studying General Pershing is important today because he helps military leaders understand the emphasis he put on readiness. This man took millions of ill prepared troops and turned them into a tide changing battle force that is still spoken about to this day. Having properly manned, fully equipped, and well-trained units is the foundation of readiness, which emphasizes the sustainment ideals Pershing followed (Piggee, 2017). Preparedness in times of war are vital because war is unpredictable and a lack of resources can really hinder someone's forces. Sending ill prepared soldiers into battle is just like sending them to their deaths. Pershing successfully turned millions of men into well trained soldiers within months. The United States Army continues to build readiness by sustainment training, fighting without contracted support, improving material management, finding game changing innovation, preparing the total force and ensuring the the right force structure (Piggee, 2017).

General John J. Pershing is a great commander and leader that show future American military leaders the importance of preparedness and readiness. Although it took him around 18 months to whip his ill prepared troops into shape the outcome was truly worth it in the end. He took his time to successfully prepare them for the tough battles to come. During that time he made tough calls to handle battle situation in the best way he could. Today's military leaders such as Lt. Gen. Aundre F. Piggee have expressed their admiration for the ideals of Pershing and what he brought to the table.
