Sometimes people say that an entity can be classified as both. When you google the definition of golem its modern definition is a robot. It is important to remember that an entity can be both. However in order to be both, the entity must be considered golem-like, as you must abandon its literal definition in Jewish folklore. Questions like: is it made from inanimate matter? Was a built to carry out a specific purpose? Is it controlled by its creator lacking free will? All these questions can pertain to both similar worlds. The main difference in the two is the supernatural element behind it. But when the supernatural element isn't made clear, who can make the distinction? - Paulo Gouveia

Golems are rooted in Jewish folklore and have been used in various ways to explore themes of creation, power, and responsibility. Robots, on the other hand, are a modern invention that emerged out of the technological advancements of the 20th century, and they have been used in science fiction and popular culture to explore themes of automation, artificial intelligence, and the relationship between humans and machines.

These themes can be explored side by side in golem like creatures that were expounded upon earlier.

Generally speaking, while both golems and robots are artificial creations designed to carry out specific tasks, they differ in their origin, purpose, and cultural context. - Paulo Gouveia

Both usually play the technology or protector that goes awry and whose creation has unintended and drastic consequences. This can be seen in robots in the film, 2001: A Space Odyssey, when the character HAL kills the  crew members of the Discovery, as their living is deemed an obstacle to the mission in his programming. Rather than aiding the crew, it was preferable to kill in order to achieve its programmed goal. The Golem of Prague is a similar story using the jewish mythological creature rather than a robot. The Golem of Prague’s purpose was originally to protect Prague’s Jewish population. The Golem not only did not protect the Jewish people, but actively attacked the Jewish community, leading to its “Deactivation” by a Rabbi. Both tropes of the robot and the golem share the idea of being good ideas that have unforeseen consequences.

They are both beings made to follow what they are made to do, but the ways in which their tasks are carried out and how they are ordered is what differentiates the two. 

For example, the robot is programmed with code and given certain rules to follow from their programming. They are also made out of material that is different from the organic material the golem is made out of. The golem as well is given its purpose from their own words and names that are given to them.
