Parminder is a dynamic protagonist. In the beginning of the short story, she is heavily white-washed, enjoying typical caucasian food, clothing etc. We can see her detachment towards her heritage and ethnicity here:
"Parminder didn't like to admit it but she had a type. For as long as she could remember she had an aversion to Asian men. Years of her overbearing Daddyji and chachas had created a distaste for her Asian brotherhood". (paragraph 1)
"Parminder couldn't believe how little her mother knew her. From time to time food parcels were delivered, all based on the fact that she had loved Indian sweets as a child.(...) She didn't notice when the parcels stopped arriving." (paragraph 9).
But then she meets her high school competition, Aisling's, husband Gurpeet, with whom she finds her way back to her roots with. Forming a new and strong bond to her punjabi roots, embracing her ethnicity.

When Parminder is with David her life is polished and detached from her ethnicity. She enjoys the family she and David have created, and hosting fine dinner parties with cheese and wine for their friends - which made her feel sophisticated in contrary to her Punjabi family dinners
"Delicate little things, a world away from her mother's steel thalis and the heavily floral dinnerware that appeared on the rare occasions her parents invited someone to dine with them. Even then it wasn't a dinner party as such, but the feeding of men by a kitchen full of women and children, who would eat only after the men's appetites had been sated."

When Parminder reconciles with her heritage with Gurpreet she finds out she has missed the Punjabi food and clothing. She finds value in her ethnicity again.
