Class blogs as a teaching tool to promote writing and student interaction.

Blogs are a useful teaching tool for improving student writing and increasing class interaction. However, most studies have looked at individual blogs rather than blogs maintained by a whole class. We introduced assignments involving participation in class blogs to four science communication classes with enrolments of between 15 and 36 students. We administered paper-based surveys to obtain student perceptions of the value of the blogging assignment. Based on feedback in semester one, we increased commenting requirements and spent more time integrating the blog with coursework in semester two. In semester two, students had significantly improved perceptions of the blog assignments. The most commonly cited benefit by students in both semesters was that the blog helped to improve their writing. Most enjoyed the opportunity to have increased intellectual exchange with other students and the majority agreed that knowing other students read the blog motivated them to write better. Students disliked being forced to comment and they felt that they benefited just from reading other students' posts. However, we recommend that weekly commenting should be mandatory, as this increased involvement and perceived value of the assignment.

In the last decade, there has been a significant increase in the range of social media tools that have become available. Despite reports of successful adoption in the higher education classroom, there have been relatively few empirical studies that have explored whether the use of blogs in teaching and learning leads to an increase in perceived learning by students. This research study adopts a post positivist research approach and a quantitative research design that uses PLS-SEM. It was found that students do perceive higher degrees of learning from using blogs, but the recognised benefits of using blogs is influenced by the students’ attitudes towards the use of technology in teaching and learning, their perceived usefulness of blogs, and the extent to which they have used blogs previously. The findings have implications for both teachers and students, as they can be used as a framework to help ensure the successful use of pedagogic blogs.

Social media in second and foreign language teaching and learning: Blogs, wikis, and social networking

This review surveys and synthesizes the findings of 87 focal pieces, published primarily since 2009 and mid 2018, on the formal and informal use of social media—blogs, wikis, and social networking—for second and foreign language teaching and learning (L2TL), including studies on the use of educational sites like Livemocha and Busuu and vernacular sites like Facebook and Twitter. The article frames the review in the development of social media and the history of social computer-assisted language learning (CALL) research. Synthesis identifies common findings, including that social media can afford the development of intercultural, sociopragmatic, and audience awareness, language learner and user identities, and particular literacies. Presentation of the focal pieces and common findings is intertwined with discussion of problematic issues, and each section concludes with a summary and implications for future research and practice.

This study implies that blogs have become increasingly popular among higher educational students because they promote learning. The study suggests that a connectivist learning model was created and has been developed to consider the implications of how the use of blogs may change the manner in which teaching occurs. During the research process many case studies were used and they found that connectivism does provide a theoretical model for the way in which teaching and learning may change as a result of the use of blogs by learners.

These first-hand retellings of everyday classroom life offer a unique critique of educational policy from the teachers’ perspective. Reporting on the analysis of 14 public-facing blogs written by New York City public school teachers, this paper highlights the possibilities held in these digital narratives by painting a picture of how teachers respond to the implementation of new educational policies.
