He was a tyrant. He wanted to unify his kingdom so he suppressed Jews and their practices, removed Yochanan from the Beit Hamikdash, and replaced him with a Hellenist. Antiochus killed Jews; burned Torah scrolls; and forbade Shabbat rest, circumcision, and keeping kashrut. Rabbi Eliezer (one of the respected elders at the time) was forced to eat pork to influence others to do the same, but he refused and was killed.

The henchmen of Antiochus came to Mattityahu (an old priest), erected in alter in the marketplace of his village, and demanded he make an offering to the Greek gods. Mattityahu refused. A hellenistic Jew tried to make the offering in his place, to which Mattityahu took up a sword and killed the man. Mattityahu's sons joined him and killed the Syrian officers.

Mattityahu and his following fled the scene to the hills of Judea. They knew the Antiochus would be angry, so they decided to wage war with the Syrians.

Mattityahu was an old man. On his death bed, he asked his sons to follow the counsel of their brother Shimon the Wise and the leadership of Judah the Strong. Judah was called "Maccabee," a word composed of the initial letters of the four Hebrew words Mi Kamocha Ba’eilim Hashem, "Who is like You, O G‑d."

The Maccabim returned to Jerusalem after winning the war. They cleared the Temple of idols and vandalism. Judah and his following built a new alter and dedicated it on 25 Kislev 3622 (139 BCE).

The golden menorah had been stolen by the Syrians, so the Maccabim made one out of cheap metal. Most of the oil had been defiled, but they were able to find one pure cruise with the stamp of the High Priest Yochanan. Miraculously, the menorah lasted for 8 days.
