Learning to Live On My Own

Over the summer I had a wrestling tournament in Fargo, North Dakota. I trained every day with my team to prepare for this tournament, but it wasn’t just the wrestling aspect that I had to worry about.
There were three wrestlers per weight class in each state and my teammates were from all over Ct. I got assigned three other roommates to live in a hotel for 10 days. This was very nerve racking for me because I had to get my own groceries, cook my own meals and make sure I was keeping my body healthy to wrestle.
We arrived at the hotel in Fargo at around 1:00 p.m. and the coach called us into the meeting room to go over our tasks for the day. “Team CT! We will be heading over to Walmart in just a few minutes to go get groceries for the week. Remember to choose healthy foods because you guys have plenty of matches ahead.”
I was quite worried since usually my mom does the shopping, let alone the cooking.
“Hey guys, let's make a list so that we don’t forget anything” I said.
“Owen why are you stressing? We will be fine.” My roommate, Dylan seemed to have it under control and wasn’t too worried about a thing I said.
Once we got to Walmart my roommates and I all divided and got the essentials we needed. “Aethan you do the meat, Owen you’re on the snacks, Donell drinks and I’ll get fruits and veggies.” Dylan seemed to know what he was doing so I began to trust the process.
Once we arrived back at the hotel, all of our stomach’s were grumbling, so Aethan fired up the stove and threw on some salmon. I watched Aethan closely because I wanted to learn how to cook salmon as well. Aethan taught me how to properly season it, how to know when it’s ready and the temperature I should be using. I was extremely appreciative that Aethan took his time to explain everything to me.
My roommates and I were able to communicate very well with keeping the room clean, who was cooking the meals and making sure everyone had the resources they needed. I continued to have my goals for the tournament in the back of my mind with every single task that I did. The nerves were going through my body for quite some time leading up to the tournament, but once everything was under control I had a great time.
Throughout the next 9 days, Aethan, Donell, Dylan and I had each other's back in any way possible, showing what teamwork truly is.

Wrestling In Pennsylvania With a New Team

Earlier this year, me and 2 other of my wrestling teammates were asked if we wanted to go wrestle in a dual meet with a different club team from up state CT. I had never gone to a tournament without my team, so I was a little bit nervous about what to expect. We were wrestling at Penn State college in the middle of nowhere and it was quite cool seeing almost a completely different world. Miles of fields, woods and Amish people commuting around in their wagons was a new one for me.
We were staying at a small two room house deep in the woods. Once we arrived at the house some of the team was already there and I immediately introduced myself and got to know them. The house had 6 bunk beds in one room and although I was not too excited about that, I really enjoyed it because the team was all bonding really well. Our coach went out and picked up some food while the team sat outside by the fire and talked about our goals as a team for tomorrow.
The next morning I woke up at sunrise and got ready to wrestle. I was really nervous because there were people from all around the country wrestling, so I did not know what to expect. We wrestled 8 matches including a team from Ohio, Maryland, and Virginia. The duel turned out to be a great success.
Not only did I have a great time wrestling at the tournament, I also made some new friends from the team I wrestled with. Now when I see these kids at other tournaments, I always hang out and talk with them.

Having Freedom at Cedar Point

Roller coasters are a passion of mine, so last summer my friend David and I took a trip up to Ohio and we went to Cedar Point amusement park. We were there for 3 days and our goal was to go on as many coasters as possible and have a great time.
When we arrived at the park in the morning, David and I sprinted to the ticket line waiting to get in. Once we got into the park, we zoomed over to our favorite coaster before the line got too long. I hadn’t gone on a roller coaster in a couple of months so when that first 200ft hill came my stomach dropped. The harsh turns, upside down loops, and everyone screaming at the top of their lungs made the ride much more adventurous. Once we got off the ride, David and I glanced at each other and smiled while our hair was sticking up like Einstein's. “Well that woke me up!” I said to David.
“David, you see the roller coaster at the end of the park called Millennium Force? I saw a video on it and it hangs you over the top of the massive hill for like 10 seconds.”
“So what's the wait?” David shouted.
While I was hanging over the top of the hill, I couldn’t help but notice the astonishing view. To your left you could see the calming view of Lake Erie and on your right you could see the entire park. After taking a quick look across the park I was forcefully pulled down a 300 ft hill at over 90mph and boy was my heart racing.
After this ride David’s dad and my dad approached us and let us know that they were going back to the hotel to relax. “Okay!” David shouts and without even saying goodbye to our dads, he sprints over to the next rollercoaster.
“You're just gonna leave us alone in a massive amusement park? Are you gonna come check on us in a bit?” I was a little bit worried since I didn’t know my way around the park, but my dad assured me that I would be fine.
I soon realized that David and I would be just fine and I was actually really glad that they gave us the freedom of going around the park on our own, because we wouldn’t have to keep checking in with them after each ride.
Throughout the next two days, our dads hung out at the pool while David and I managed to go on over 40 rides, eat lots of delicious food and have a great time. It was really cool of our parents to allow us to explore the entire park by ourselves.
After we got home from the park, I could not stop talking about it with friends and family for weeks. Still to this day, almost every time David and I hang out, I feel like our trip to cedar is brought up multiple times. Cedar Point was a Blast!
