Judy Genshaft Honors College offers multiple study abroad options to Honors students that provide experiential learning in their major as well as other areas of interest. This website gives information about how to qualify, the fees, and what the trip entails. Moreover, there are multiple types of study abroad, in terms of duration, that the students can choose from.

Fictional yet Relatable Scenarios

My plan for this week is to break up the lesson into three parts: presentation, scenarios, and trivia. For the scenarios in particular, students will break off into groups and will be given separate scenarios (inspired by last year’s PM pro devo!) based on fictional students’ current situations and desired career/life goals. For instance, a scenario could be something like “Bob is a freshman student who studies engineering and wants to work at a software company. He currently has little experience in the field and wants to build his resume. What could be some relevant high-impact practices for Bob to consider?” Scenarios could be based off of Honors Foundations students’ desired paths or random examples. After group discussions, there will be class discussion to see whether other groups agree with each other’s HIP plans for their assigned scenarios. This activity is meant to inspire students to reflect on their involvement and HIP opportunities as they continue to plan out their journeys, taking care to write it in pencil.

USF World and the USF Global Learning Center have a ton of study abroad opportunities listed on their website. They have a program directory that students can use to search for a study abroad opportunity that meets their specific academic/personal needs, and they also have a course search tool that students can use to search for classes that are offered abroad!

Volunteer at Feeding Tampa Bay!

One of my best experiences at USF was my time volunteering with Feeding Tampa Bay. They are an amazing organization with plenty of friendly volunteers. The shifts are very flexible and are offered almost everyday of the month with a variety of locations around the Tampa Bay area.

I used this example for Week Two but it also applies here. CAP is the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force. They are a non-profit that does a lot of community service - as it is one of its core values (in line with the Air Force). They do a lot of hurricane relief help as well. This specific link is to the North Tampa-Lutz Squadron, about 12 minutes from campus.

I think it is important to remind your students to remember their "why". Sometimes Honors students will find their calendar stacking up, and it can be overwhelming. So remind them of the reason they are getting involved and getting these experiences. And also remind them that they are allowed to say no to some things. There will eventually be a crossroad where they need to choose between two activities, so be the person that encourages them early to prioritize what fulfills them and benefits them.

Launch Academy at USF

Launch at USF is a program where students volunteer their time weekly to mentor students with learning disabilities. They usually spend 4 hours a week with the student, helping them with assignments and daily tasks. It is a really great volunteer experience, as well as an overall learning experience, and really helps you find a good buddy at USF after all the time you spend with them. I participated in this program for a year, and would defiantly recommend as a volunteer opportunity.

One way we can always be confident that the Lord will provide for us is looking at creation around us! We see how birds are provided with food sources and habitats. Even flowers are supplied with water and places to grow. Seeing that how could we doubt if things will work out for us! Life is hard and we will go through rough times but look back at trial you’ve already been through and the way you’re stronger now! Just keep pushing through and it’ll all work out!

Getting involved in undergraduate research can be quite challenging due to the competitiveness of securing research positions. I am currently searching for a research opportunity myself, but one thing that has helped me is talking to my professors who are engaged in research. It's not always a straightforward question of whether they have research assistant roles available; sometimes, it's more beneficial to ask professors about their journeys and any advice they might have for students in my position. Additionally, being attentive in class and putting in hard work have contributed to me being offered research opportunities.

Stare Tag Review

High-Impact Practices pack a punch, with all of the information that students will have to absorb and explore. At the end of my lesson, I intend to review with Stare Tag. Students line up in a circle around the room and the PM will count down from 3. On one, each student will look up at another person in the circle. If that other person is looking at them, they should both raise their hands. The PM should have multiple review questions prepared, and should ask each pair a review question, the first student to call out the right answer gets to remain in the game. I've done this game with middle schoolers and it's always a blast. You can usually play for a few rounds if you have enough questions and about 10 minutes.

I remember wanting to participate in some research as a business student before I realized what I wanted to do. I came across this website and reached out to a few professors who were incredibly willing to speak to me and offer guidance. It's also a great way to get into research in areas that may not be in your major but interests that you still have.

This student organization hosts events for members to do community service. They have things like beach cleanups, food pantry volunteering, and helping with community gardens. Sometimes is can be difficult to find opportunities for service or even know where to begin so this is a great way to get involved. It is also a great way to connect with like-minded individuals.

Mission Statement Match-up

Recognizing that not all of the students in my class will be familiar with the Tampa Bay area, I decided to design my icebreaker so that all students can be introduced to local volunteering opportunities. Each student will receive a slip of paper. Half of the papers will be the name of a Tampa Bay nonprofit or service group (examples include Crisis Center of Tampa Bay, Feeding Tampa Bay, Humane Society of Tampa Bay, etc.). The other half of the papers will have a mission statement written without the name of the organization. Students will have 5 minutes to try to find their name/mission statement match. Students will go around in pairs and share their matches.

Honors students constantly aim to push themselves and progressively overload their academic, extracurricular, and personal achievements. Often, I find myself and my close friends comparing ourselves to others who are 'better than us'. This can range from comparing grades to peers in the same classes as me, or even comparing the amount of free time others have. It is important for students to realize that everyone has personalized goals and that there is not a streamline path to success. In the pre-medical sense, many students are extremely competitive in the classroom and often want to 'beat the competition' by achieving higher grades or completing more hours in extracurricular activities. Watching our peers complete actions in a smaller time period than ourselves can lead to feelings of jealousy and unfullfillment. At the end of the day, everyone's competition is only themselves. Students need not get caught up in the rate in which others reach their goals, as the true measure of success is how much you have changed compared to yourself yesterday.

I know that many current research assistants got their positions through cold emailing, which I think is an important topic to discuss in this week's class. I also want to mention that each college's departments frequently send out notices regarding openings for research, internships, and job opportunities. These are very valuable and important to read! I got my current research position through a Department of Psychology notice on Canvas, and there are frequent postings for opportunities there. I think this is a valuable tip to help students stay in the loop with their department and potential opportunities.

Many students want and/or are interested in studying abroad, but funding is a major concern. Showing students that there are resources available to help alleviate some of the financial burden will help them see that there is an opportunity. I also think it is important to mention to my students that there is a scholarship that Honors students receive for going on an Honors study abroad trip (not mentioned on this website).

This is one of my favorite quotes, which I learned through my own high-impact practice and volunteering program I participated in in high school. When getting caught up in the technicalities of actually pursuing a career, whether it's building an impressive resume or completing class requirements, it can be easy to lose sight of the "why," especially for Honors students that are constantly bombarded by new requirements or new activities they are told they need for a higher degree program. High-impact practices are so important, which is why they are a requirement for JGHC; however, it's important not to just complete them for the sake of completing them. Make sure to choose practices you are passionate about, affecting something you care about, whether it's down at the Animal Shelter helping with animal welfare, or in a research facility working toward new information on whatever field you are pursuing. Be the change you wish to see, do not wait for someone else to take on the big task, and never lose sight of the why, as it can take the fun out of the whole experience.

CKI is a club at USF that offers opportunites for community service. In this club you get free carpooling to events and opportunites every weekend to go somehwere that is in need of help. The volunterring opportunties are all unique and also give you good expericne while netowrking with others.

An activity that I am introducing to the students of my class is a group activity about studying abroad. As a group they will decide on a study abroad trip. They will make a plan as a group about what they will do at that location. This will help show what a study abroad trip looks like if they want to complete one in the future.

Scavenger Buddy

One activity I plan on using for Week 5 is called Scavenger Buddy. Each student writes down their name and one HIP they want to participate in- and they should be specific! For example- "I want to participate in a shadowing study abroad" or "I want to volunteer with an organization that provides mental health support". All the paper slips will go into a hat and everyone takes out one slip and gets 10 minutes to find one resource to help with that goal. Not just BullsConnect or the ONS office but something more specific, like a link to the USF in Portugal physician shadowing page. In the end we will all share the resources we found. This is a great way to look at HIP activities you maybe would not have thought of and get some extra help from a peer if you're struggling to find resources.

HIP "Passport" Activity

For my activity, I am setting up stations around the room. I will briefly explain what a HIP is and why it can be important for future career paths/college. I will be giving easily made booklets to each of my students where they will go around to each station and answer a prompt that piques their interest in 5 categories of HIP practices (study abroad, research/internships, volunteering, scholarships, honors). They will be asked prompts such as "if you could research anything in your field – or outside of it – what would it be?" for each category. Then we will all share. After my class presentation, I will ask each of them to go further into their answers for 2 of the prompts and find an organization, resource, or a plan they can engage with using info from the modules, the stations, or the presentation. After, we will all share at least one under any category by writing under categories on the whiteboard and discuss further. Through this I hope all my students practice being reflective and intentional with what they decide to become involved in.

SEA PHAGES Program

The SEA PHAGES program is an undergraduate research program that involves discovering, purifying, and isolating a bacteriophage. The wet and dry lab experience one can get from this program is incredible! Although it is a small and a fairly competitive program, students can email Dr. Richard Pollenz and try to join this incredible opportunity!

HIP Jeopardy

For this activity, I plan to make a Jeopardy board covering questions relating to research, study abroad, community service, ONS, etc. I'll divide my class into 3 teams and have them compete for the most points. I did this activity last year with my previous class and they enjoyed it. I feel like it helped them with recalling the information and getting more familiar with high impact practices. It also gave me the chance to readdress any subject areas or questions that the entire class was unsure of.

Activity: Scavenger Hunt – Find a Resource

In pairs, assign each group one HIP area: Study Abroad, Internships, Research, Service-Learning.

Have them explore USF’s website on phones or laptops and answer:
- What is the main office or contact?
- What opportunities exist?
- How do you get started?
- Each group collects their answers into a shared Google Doc for the class.

I really think that having a shared google doc with everyone collaborating for different HIPs will be effective and a great resource for them to use throughout their time at USF

Organization/System for REU Application

I have found it very helpful to stay organized and ahead of time in REU searches. Attached is a screen shot of part of my 2024 REU Search board on Trello. I've also found Notion to work well. It's important to not overdo it and waste time optimizing the system instead of using it, but it can be quite helpful especially for being organized when meeting with advisors or ONS for advice.

At times it's less daunting to create a relationship with a teacher assistant that is closer in age typically gets to know you in a smaller class setting. While the way in which one can go about talking to them about research should stem from curiosity of their own passions in perusing a Doctorate. That allows you to one learn about them and even learn valuable traits that successful researcher/ young scientist have. If you have shown hard work throughout the course, you can ask if they have heard of anyone looking for undergraduates for research while also understanding that at times, they are limited in their ability to recommend you. I would also say that making friends that are in research lab they may hear that the professor next door is looking for undergraduates to help out.

I think that a really good way to get research at USF is through cold emailing different professors who have research experience that you are interested in. While this does take some time, I think that this has worked the best for me. From my personal experience in becoming a research assistant, I looked up different research that was available on campus and both emailed the lead investigator and filled out a google docs showing interest in their lab.
