Yersinia pestis, also known as the plague or black death, is a disease that causes fever, fatigue, pain, swelling of the lymph nodes, and emission of pus. This pathogen causes great pain to the host. Most signs are visible within 24 hrs, but if not treated quickly the likelyhood of death will increase. From 2010-2015 there were 3,248 cases worldwide including 584 deaths. There are three types of plagues that can evolve from this pathogen including, bubonic, pneumonic, and septicemic. Although there are no vaccines available, there are antibiotics available for those diagnosed. This disease is transmitted through rodents and their fleas, you can get it from either messing with a dead rodent or from the bite of a flea that has been on an infected rodent.
