The setting is important because it is in a place where poverty is common and people don’t have much money. This is what causes Lakshmi to go into human trafficking.
“At dawn in Nepal, our hut, perched high on the mountainside, is already torched with sunlight.”

In this book the antagonist is her stepfather. Lakshmi's stepfather is the one who initially put her into the human trafficking line. He gave her to people for money and she was sexually assaulted multiple times because of it. Her step father is her antagonist. She was put in a home with other young girls and was a prostitute as well as these other girls. This was what she was going to do for a long time until she paid off her "debt". "You must stay in school, no matter what your stepfather says." another quote is "A tin roof means that the family has a father who doesn't gamble away the landlord's money playing cards in the tea shop."

Theme

The theme of the book Sold is gender. At the beginning of Sold, Ama explains to Lakshmi that women are meant to suffer for life and that's what you see during the book. Even though they have a lower social status, you see women like Mumtaz, Auntie Bimla, and Bajai Sita who want power whatever way possible, even though that power makes them disrespect, or harm other women harshly. And the roles of men are also complicated. There are men who sell Lakshmi to new buyers and don't help her, but there are also men and boys who are kind, who teach her, and who end up helping her escape slavery. So for both genders, it's hard to say whether they are good or evil. "Ama says we are lucky to have a man at all. I am to honor and praise him, respect and thank him for taking us in after my father died." We see why it's important to a man in the household. Even though Ama and Lakshmi are definitely better off without the stepfather as we can tell because he never does any work and gambles away their money, but having a man is socially better for them than having no man at all so they keep him in the household.
