I am alone and need support. I am also pushing back on the idea of nurses being the "catch all" at the school, and performing all duties for all people.  For example, I have advised SpEd that I do not toilet SpEd students in the health office like the previous nurse, as there are aides that are supposed to perform these duties in SpEd building. This is supported by a bulletin in my district. I must prioritize my required duties such as IEP's, safety, and constant traffic due to the high volume at my school. I worked with our union, and was able to successfully achieve 1 RN per 2 sites after showing the research and data to support this action. This year, I plan on advocating to get district LVNs. Currently, we only have contracted LVNs and they are not always reliable or know how to treat our diabetics. I again will work with the union to obtain this goal by the end of this school year. At one of my sites, I have advocated that student's sitting out of PE for injuries do not sit and be monitored in the health office due to risk of infection and confidentiality. I do think it is important to draw attention to the School Nurse department and our contribution to a functioning, positive school environment. We went to the last Board Meeting and spoke (just in the general comment time) about the dire state of our department and the needs we have at this time. The Superintendent and the SELPA Director have acknowledged us and we are working together to improve the situation.
