The USA hockey team.
No one expected the 1980 U.S. Men's Olympic Hockey team to win much of anything. They did believe the team, made entirely of amateur and collegiate players, would go out there and play their hearts out. The U.S. team to beat the Soviet powerhouse 6 time gold medalist in a stunning 4-3 game. The team would go on to beat Finland and win gold!!

What: She competed in front of millions and ended up winning bronze, 4 days after her mom passed away. She dedicated the medal to her mother.

Derek Raymond

Derek Raymond was a Brittish runner, who tore his hamstring halfway through a semi-final race. Instead of stopping Derek perserviered and continued to finish the race. The most memerable part of the race was when the runners father leapt over the railing, from the stands, to help his son finish the race. The the father had stopped short of the finish line cheering his son on along with the crowd, so Derek could cross the finish line himself.

The people involved in the moment were Derek Raymond and Mr.Raymond.

The moment occure while derek was running his 400m dash.

It occured in the 1992 Barcelona summer olympics

This is my favorite olympic moment because Derek chose to perservere through the pain to continue to finish his race, eventually getting assistance from his dad. While the crowd was cheering for him as he crossed the finish line.

Katie Ledecky is a United States Swimmer. She was the youngest athlete in the 2012 London Olympics, and one of the first women to hold the three distance world record after Jane Evans. This year in the 2016 Olympics she won 4 gold medals and 1 silver. She is a 5 time olympic gold medalist and a 9 time world champion. She also broke the record in the women's 800's meter on the time with 8:06.68.

Because even though his goggles filled with water, he was still determined and worked to be able to make it to to the wall at the finish by purely counting strokes. Then, on top of that amazing feat, he won the gold medal and broke the world record, even though he couldn’t see at all on his final 50.

Ice Skating Gold Medal Win

Peggy Fleming won a gold medal for the United States last minute in Figure Skating event. In the 1968 Winter Olympics, hosted at Grenoble, France. The U.S olympic team in Figure Skating couldn’t seem to win any medals, ever since the Sabena plane crash that killed everyone on the U.S figure skating team in 1961. But finally, Peggy was able to pull through a win the United States team a gold medal in skating that year.

This was inspiring because it’s amazing that Peggy, and the United States as a whole was able to pull through a win the medal even after everything that’s happened.

In the 1998 Calgary winter olympics the Jamaican bobsled team captured the hearts of many by being the first bobsledders from such a tropical place participating in a winter sport. They did not win any medals but they were a great inspiration to all the so called “underdogs.” It was such an inspiring story that Disney even made a movie about it!
Why is this your favorite moment?
This is my favorite olympic moment because they were considered the “underdogs” of the competition because they were from a very tropical place and competing in a winter sport. I think that this story is very inspiring because even though they didn’t have the privileges that many of the other countries had they still believed in themselves and trained and persevered as hard as they could. Although, they did not win any medals it is still a very inspiring story.

Derek Redmond was an olympic runner for Great Britain. He was favored to win the gold in the 400 meter sprint in the 1992 Barcelona Summer Games, setting many previous records. Some of these records include G-1991 Tokyo 4 by 400m, S-1987 Rome 4 by 400m, G-1986 Stuttgart 4 by 400m, G-1986 Edinburgh 4 by 400m. 150 meters into the race Derek instantly stops running due to serious leg pain, he then fell to the ground with a pulled hamstring. But that wasn’t the end for Derek, determined to finish he pushes forward through the pain. Then breaking through security a man comes running all the way down to the track to take him in his arms… It was his father. Then he told his son “You don’t have to do this,” but his son quickly responded with, “Yes I do.” After that the father responded, “Well then, we’re going to finish together!” So together they continued moving forward. Then right before the finish line the father let his son go and finish the race. The crowd of 65,000 responded with a standing ovation. Though he was listed as DNF he went down in history as an inspiration. This is my favorite Olympic event in history because it shows the true spirit of the Olympics, the determination of true athletes, and most of all the love of a father. We can all learn from Derek.

Montreal 1976

In the Montreal Olympic Games in 1976, a lot of big events happened. First of all, 26 African countries boycotted the International Olympic Committee because they didn’t take action against New Zealand sending their rugby team to tour when the were divided. Taiwan also boycotted because the Chinese Republic wouldn’t allow them to participate in the games. The female swimmers from East Germany were accused of using anabolic steroids to enhance their strength and performance. Anabolic steroids give a similar reaction to what testosterone does in/for your body. That wasn’t the only difficulty in the Montreal Games though. There were also a lot of financial issues causing Canada and Quebec to be in debt for many decades to come.

This is my favorite moment because a lot happened that year and it was a really big deal and the olympic people didn't really do anything about the events that happened this year

The olympian who is involved in this moment's name is Abebe bikila. He was from the country Ethiopia and was a track Marathon runner. The moment I am writing about was when he won the gold medal in a marathon race while running barefoot. At that time he was also the first East - African to win any medal. This happened in 1960 at the Rome olympic games. His second gold medal happened at the 1964 olympic games in Tokyo. This is my favorite Olympic moment because he did something no one has ever done or even considered doing. He is a very talented athlete that pushed himself extremely hard and that ended up bring him medals. Gold medals. At the end of Abebe’s career he was a two time gold medalist.

Who is involved in the moment? Dan Jansen What was the moment or event? 10 years after Dan Jansen’s Olympic appearance, he finally won a gold, which he had fought extremely hard for. He won a gold in the 1,000 meter event in Lillehammer, Norway. Dan had decided to dedicate the medal to his sister who had just died from Leukemia that afternoon. When did it happen? 1994 Where did it happen? Lillehammer, Norway Why is this your favorite olympic moment? This is my favorite olympic moment because it’s really meaningful and inspiring. His sister had just died, that day, and he still participated, in the race. To make it even more emotional, he won the gold and dedicated the medal to his sister because she fought so hard in her fight with cancer.

Abebe Bikila was an Ethiopian marathon runner who competed in the 1960 olympics in Rome. He was the first Sub-Saharan African to win an olympic gold medal. This is my favorite olympic moment because he not only won the marathon in 2 hours, 15 minutes and 16.2 seconds but he ran the whole marathon barefoot, the same way he trained.

In 1921, the “International Olympic Committee” decided to host a Winter Sports Week in 1924. The first Winter Olympics were held in Chamonix, France in from January 25th, to February 5th. The games attracted 10,004 spectators and it turned out to be a great success.

Historic Moments

In ice hockey, the Canadian team scored 85 points without conceding a goal in its first three matches. Canada ended up winning the tournament scoring 122 goals and only allowing 3 goals! Clas Thunberg (representing Finland) had an outstanding olympic performance. Clas came home with 5 medals (including 3 golds) in the five speed skating events!American Charles Jewtraw became the first Winter Games champion by winning the 500m speed skating event (the first event).

Smaller Event

In the 1924 Winter Olympics, only 258 athletes competed. In which, 247 men competed, and only 11 women competed. Medal counts were very low due to there only being 16 events. The most medals won individually by Clas Thunberg who ended with 5 medals. There were only 16 Olympic Committees. The winner in medal count was Norway who ended with 4 gold, 7 silver, 6 bronze, and a total of 17.

This is my favorite Olympic moment because I’m a huge fan of the Winter Olympics and I have always enjoyed watching the sports. This was where it all started and the Winter Olympics are always the event that comes every four years that gets my joys up.

Mary Lou Retton is part of my favorite moment. My favorite moment took place in the 1984 Los Angeles olympics. I choose this because Mary Lou Retton was the first female for the U.S.A to win overall gold in gymnastics. I think this is very important to the US olympic history.

1994 Norway Winter Olympics

In 1988 Dan Jansen was competing for the 500 meters in speed skating. But on the very day he was supposed to compete, his sister passed away. As you can imagine this greatly impacted him. None the less he still competed but lost by falling on a turn. He still had the 1000 meter. He did the same thing. 4 years later, he tried again. he also failed both times. 1994 Norway Olympics. He competed in the 500 meter race and again he again fell. In the 1000 meter he almost fell BUT he righted himself. Not only did he win the race but This is my favorite moment because after years of grief over the death of his sister (Jane Beres), and regret of his losses in the Olympics, Dan overcame great challenges and won gold AND set a world record. After he won he held his daughter and looked up and said “Thank you Jane”. This was a touching moment, combined with the fact that he overcame so many challenges.
