In Along for the Ride, Dessen introduces Auden's past. She shows why Auden is so smart and mature. When Auden was younger, she had a hard life. For example, her parents got
divorced, she had a very mean brother, and she had no friends. During these times, Auden only concentrated on school. Because she focused so much on her academic, she became very intelligent and mature. As Auden started to grow up, she noticed that her maturity took over her childhood. All of the other teenagers had so many memories and experiences that she never had. For example, Auden never learned how to ride a bike. The lack of experiences starts to affect her later in life.

Dynamic Character

In Along for the Ride, Auden is a dynamic character. In the beginning, Auden was very mature, and never had fun. For example, Auden would always work on her school work and she would never hang out with friends. However, when Auden moved to her Dad's house for the summer, things changed. Auden made more friends and was invited to a lot of parties. She started to notice that being very mature isn't always a good thing. She started thinking that nothing is wrong with being mature and that she is making her mother proud. Once having all the new experiences during the summer, she started having a different perspective on her thoughts and the way she acts. These thoughts caused her to change her personality by the end of the story.

Theme

In Along for the Ride, the main theme that I pulled out of the story is, don't let your maturity take over. In the exposition, Dessen introduces Auden and what her past was like. When Auden goes to her dads house, she meets a guy named Eli. Eli takes her on a "quest" to do the things that she never did as a child. For example, Eli took Auden bowling, they stayed up all night, and most importantly, Eli taught Auden how to ride a bike. While bowling, Auden started to notice that she missed out on so much as a kid. She started to wonder what her life would have been like if she wasn't so focused on impressing her mother, and she wishes that she wouldn't have let her maturity stop her from doing the things that most kids get to do.

Internal Conflict

The main conflict in Along for the Ride, is an internal conflict between Auden and herself. There are many small external conflicts that Auden faces throughout the story, but her biggest problem is herself. Auden never had to face her fears, she never had to make new friends, and she never needed to try new things. She was exposed to all of these things when she spent the summer at her dads house. She needed to start making friends to spend her summer with. She had to do new things, like riding a bike, going bowling, and not spending so much time studying. She kept telling herself that she cant do it and that it was impossible. These thoughts caused her to be scared and to not want to do any if the fun opportunities that were offered to her during the summer. For example, Eli got Auden a bike and told Auden that he would help her ride it. She has wanted to be able to ride a bike ever since she was a child. Once she got the opportunity, she let herself get in the way.

Protagonist

Auden is the protagonist in Along for the Ride. She isn't very social, but she is very intelligent. She moves to her dad's house for the summer, and it completely changes her perspective on life. She learns a lot, and she changes drastically over the course of the story, making her a dynamic character. Auden learns a lot from her mistakes and her past. This helps develop the theme. She changes the mistakes that she made in her past, by learning new things and not living under her mother's strict rules. She makes many new friends and she does things that she never thought she would do. Auden was an amazing choice for a main character because her personality is so complicated, and the way her personality changes is what makes the story so interesting.

In Along for the Ride, Auden never completely solves her problem. She is so caught up in her past, and that is very hard to escape. She does, however, learn how to ride a bike and she does make new friends like Eli, Maggie, and Adam. She learns about herself through those people and they teach her that having fun isn't something to punish yourself for. Auden still takes her education very seriously, but she also knows the importance of fun. She explains to her mother what happened over the summer, and they become a lot closer. Also, Auden is going to college with her friend, Maggie, that she met while visiting her dad over the summer. Auden promised her mother that she will try her best in school, but she also promised her dad that she would enjoy her time in college.

Setting

Along for the Ride takes place mostly at Auden's dads house. Her dads house is located in a small town on an ocean. I think the author chose this setting because it gives the story a completely different feel. If the story took place in a cold setting, Eli and Auden wouldn't have been able to do the things they did. For example, Auden wouldn't have been able to learn to ride a bike, and that is one of the main things that happens in the story. Also, the setting gives off a very summery feel which, I feel, makes the book more enjoyable.
