What exactly is homophobia? I understand the general gist of it...but what exactly makes someone homophobic? For example, what if someone holds the religious belief that being homosexual is wrong, but doesn't let this affect their relationships with people who are homosexual? Does this make them homophobic?...Does this make them a bad person? I hear a lot of different opinions.

I'm studying to become a history teacher so I think it would be super cool to be like yeah check out this gay person who did this rad shit. This will give the Lgbtq kids some hope and inspiration that they can do the same. Not trying to say they need it but I'm sure it would be cool for them to hear.

Being knowledgable about LGBTQ issues is very important as a future educator because inclusion, acceptance, and a shared sense of respect is most consistently cultivated in the classroom. As a teacher, you are a leader and possibly surrogate parent, either way heavily impacting the beliefs/attitudes of the students you teach especially at a younger age.

LGBTQ+ issues will be important to me as a history teacher, but I know that I will have to work overtime to show people who are LGBTQ+ and aren't shown in only the required curriculum. Also, can I as a cisgender straight person use the word "queer" as an adjective to describe someone in the LGBTQ+ community? Also, is "LGBTQ+ community" an outdated term itself?

I feel like it is our job to be as knowledgeable as possible in regards to what our students may be going through. Regarding LGTBQ issues, I think it is important for me to be aware said issues for any of my students that may identify with the LGBTQ community. I want to be respectful of their identity and I want to create a safe environment for them. Of course some students may not be comfortable making their identity public but that is also okay; overall it's about respect and awareness.

LGBTQ issues are extremely important for us as future educators. I believe that we do not have to be experts but we need to know about the big topics. As a teacher, many different types of students will come into our room, and it is our responsibility and duty to make them feel safe. This means keeping up with all the issues that are important to your students, however they identify.

I'm more anxious than anything about being able to make a truly safe space in my classroom.

I find it extremely important. I want my students to feel loved and that they belong in my class no matter what. I also fully and openly support the LGBTQA+ Community and would like for my students to not feel as if they are being discriminated against in my class. Or if they needed someone to talk to I would be an open ear. One question is that I am always afraid to call someone by the wrong pronouns. I have done it before and then apologized and now call them the correct pronouns. But how am I suppose to know or how would I know if someone goes by different pronouns or if they don’t ?
