Sudanese refugees, upon arrival to Australia, often face many health issues; this is due to the conditions Sudan is in right now, and an example of this is the killing of innocent people in Sudan, which allows physical and mental problems to occur. An example of this is the spread of infectious diseases due to the current condition of Sudan. The spread of disease is highly present there, and malaria is an example. In 2022, there were 7680 cases and 18 malaria deaths alone in a day(Battling Malaria, South Sudan Anticipates Roll-out of Life-Saving Vaccines, 2024). This a severe health concern for refugees as we don’t want the spread of disease across continents, which can lead to an outbreak or even a pandemic in Australia. A treatment option to cure the disease for refuges with less severe cases of malaria is to take oral tablets given by doctors or provide a complete treatment process in a hospital for more severe cases to be able to cure the disease before it enters and spreads in Australia bear in mind malaria can stay positive after treatment up to 28 days (Malaria» Australian Refugee Health, 2015).

The competency standards framework for clinicians outlines the standards of nurses for the care of refugees who need help, and these standards protect them from any unruly or unjust treatment from nurses(Migrant and Refugee Women’s Health Partnership, 2019). Standard for me, standard 1.1 is the most appropriate as it discusses the rights of patients to have care that doesn’t impact their beliefs and undermines the cultural backgrounds able to provide care that Keeps dignity intact; this opened my mind to how open and patient nurses we must be to keep and alter a person’s care to their background and beliefs. Having learned this, I now feel capable and aware of taking on the vital task of caring for a patient with a culture different from mine. This skill will be essential to me in the future workplace as a nurse as I will come across people with different cultures to me, and knowing how to care for them and understand how I can do that elevates and betters my care for my patients in the future (Migrant and Refugee Women’s Health Partnership, 2019).

Traditional medicine

Traditional medicine in Sudan is integral to Sudanese culture, specifically herbal medicine. A vast amount of Indigenous people in Sudan and the rest of Africa uses conventional medicinal plants and care as the first line of healthcare; 90 per cent of the majority of peasant populations people use this medicinal medicine as most other medicines are for the rich and people in power as they don’t run the risk of dying as the medicine is proven. In contrast, traditional medicine must go through trial and error before knowing if the medicine is booming. This medicinal medicine can be consumed in many ways. An example of this is in foods, tea, tablets or capsules. An herb that is used mainly in Sudan is Grewia Tenex. It contains many vitamins and minerals and is a good source of iron. It can be eaten fresh and dried, and it helps avoid diseases such as anaemia. Another example of medicinal medicine is Sannamaka Senna, rich in bioactive compounds used as laxatives to treat intestinal complications (Hassan et al., 2021).
