The lottery has shifting tones, in the beginning the tone was calm and later turned sinister. For instance, Shirley Jackson starts off with imagery writing "The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green." line 1-2 to portray a seemingly normal and ordinary town, one that her reader's might relate to. As the story progresses, tones quickly shift from ordinary to eerie and sinister as Mrs. Delacroix screams "It isn't fair, it isn't right."
