Critical literacy is a skill which readers use when reading texts that convey or include writers’ own stances, the types of the texts could be narrative, expository, promoting, and many other more, these text might have bias and different opinions and stances from the readers, under this kind of situation, critical reading plays an important role. Rather than only understanding the texts using the traditional literacy skills, critical readers come up with their own interpretations, stances and opinions by understanding and analyzing almost every aspect they could think of, which probably are not mentioned in the written texts. Critical reading prevents us from getting brainwashed and being easily influenced by false texts and information, it helps build up our own critical thoughts.

Critical literacy is to doubt anything we read. We do not accept everything we read, we question and problematize texts so we can decide whether what the author trying to convey is neutral. Moreover, we construct, reconstruct so we can become critical in everyday lives. It differs from traditional literacy because we don't absorb all the information we encounter anymore. Last but not least, we take actions and try to make the world a more social just place.‹

It is an ability to think deeper to the information we got, and don’t just accept the topic or author’s one-side statement.
The traditional reading and writing usually just accept the information they got, while critical literacy encourages people to think by themselves and come up with various thoughts, doubts and questions.

Critical literacy uses different perspectives to understand the meaning behind the texts, and to know how the authors position both themselves and readers. It inquires the authenticity of the information.

Traditional literacy skills just question the authenticity of the texts. However, critical literacy not only read the words but also read the world. We can practice how to use this skill to understand what we read in daily lives.

Critical literacy means to challenge the dominant viewpoints. It enables people to think in a different aspect, to uncover the deeper meanings, for instance, cultural background, values, bias, of the texts. For traditional literacy, it’s based on the author’s perspective and what they want to convey to the readers. Readers passively receive information from the author.
