They kind of had a tense relationship though. There was eventually a wall erected by the Soviet Union called the Berlin Wall to stop defects but America eventually broke it down.  The Americans  feared the communism of the Soviet Union and the distrust between countries led to them breaking up. Their constant competing started the space race.They were competing for dominance of "spaceflight  capability. The race was at its climax when the first human were on the moon in the Apollo 11.

They wanted to beat the Soviets to space. But the Soviets were able to establish the very first satellite in space called the Sputnik 1. The Americans were bent on having a man on the moon. Which led to the space crafts today.
