What is Discrimination in Sports?

Discrimination in sports happens because of both gender and race. Women all around the World are phenomenal athletes but every day they lose opportunities to do bigger things because most of the World is always watching the men athletes and looking over the women. With race, just like any other racism issue, people of color have to work ten times harder to be recognized and ever harder to make it to the professional level. "...discrimination in sports continues to be a blight on what should be a fun atmosphere" (Snook, 2019). Sports are meant for all people around the world to enjoy and shows their skill and no matter the race or sex of a person, we should all have the same opportunities.

Why is there a need for awareness and action?

Spreading awareness is always an important part of the process when trying to find a solution to any social justice topic. For sports discrimination, it is extremely important because the more people who know about it and realize how many people are affected by it, the more they will want to take action and try to fix this problem in our society.

Taking action is the most important step in finding a solution. By taking a stand and actually doing something like a protest or a fundraiser not only raises awareness to people around you, but it will get to the people who are higher up and capable of making change for these athletes. It is the 21st century and it is time to take a stand and give all people equal chances and going to the professional level in sports. "This action will help coaches and players to be more open-minded and it is very important to show support towards people who are being discriminated and take actions of those who abuse somebody" (Discrimination in Sports – How It Affects People and How to Prevent It?, 2018.)

My Experience with Sports Discrimination

Personally, I have had a few issues with sports discrimination in my life. The one that most stands at happened when I was in elementary school and middle school. I loved street hockey, so my parents put me in a league, and I ended up being the only girl on the team. It did not bother me until it became clear that I was only played during the games when there were girls on the other team. I understand some may think it's dangerous but to me it did not matter if it were a boy or a girl, I would still play the same and try just as hard. I ended up quitting in middle school because I would get such little playing time and the coaches would not focus on getting me better, only the boys. I do not want to grow up and have a daughter who wants to play a sport that is more "boy oriented" and not be able to do wat she loves because she is a girl. Not only that, being a teacher will mean that I will have female students and I will have people of all different races and I am going to make sure they all have equal opportunities. I will try my hardest to make sure everyone else around me is doing the same thing for their students and letting them grow up knowing that they all have the same opportunities as the student sitting next to them

How to get Involved

There are so many ways to get involved and make a difference with sports discrimination.
- Simply supports a player/team that is a girl or of color, by doing this you are drawing more attention to that team/player which gives them more a chance of getting noticed
- if you or someone you know works in the sports industry, propose more gender and equity policies and try to get them enforced as soon as you possibly can
- support athletes who speak up about the issue and try to make a difference
- encourage it upon others to not make assumptions about athletes based on their race/sex
- if you work in the sports industry, try to create a safe environment for new immigrants where they can practice in the same facilities and be noticed by the same people as everyone else

Along with these simple actions, there are always protested around the country for this and there are groups on social media whose main purpose is fixing sports discrimination. By simply following them you are making a difference, but if you would like to do more you can contact them and see when their next event is and what you can do to help the cause. No matter how small the task may be, anything helps.
