The compromise was an agreement between Northern and Southern states - Southern states wanted to keep the importation of slaves legal, while the Northern states were generally against it. The compromise allowed the continued importation of enslaved people into the U.S. for another 20 years. Congress passed a law in 1807 which took effect in 1808 that banned the importation of enslaved people.

The Southern states ultimately benefited from the Slave Importation Compromise as their economy was heavily dependent on slavery compared to the North, and they then had the opportunity to continue using slaves for an additional 20 years. The North had no real benefit from this due to the fact they were already moving closer to the abolishment of slaves.
