Stage 1: Trust vs. Mistrust

Erikson's first stage, Trust vs. Mistrust, is the most important stage of development because it is the stage where a child can establish whether or not to trust or not trust their parents/guardians. This stage is also a big step for getting them ready for the world as they have a safe and protected "world" in their home.

Quote: "People need to trust the world and the people in it, but they also need to learn some mistrust to protect themselves from danger." p.13

Stage 2: Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt

Erikson's second stage, Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt, is where the child wishes to do what they can for themselves by themselves. This pictures is an example of that because a girl is playing with her colors, and thought about whether to paint by herself or the paper. A few examples of this is potty training, a child picking out their own outfit or even choosing to put their shoes on the wrong feet. As a child I loved picking out my own clothes that always ended up being mix-matched.

Quote: "As children are better able to make their wishes understood, they become more powerful and independent."p. 156

Erikson's stage 3, Initiative vs. guilt, this is the play stage and the stage where children like to push boundaries and see how far they can go with something. This is also where children like trying to get their way. When I was a child I had to have my black patent leather shoes that had to make a "clickity-clack" noise (like a horse) other wise I refused to wear them.

Quote: "Children who learn how to regulate these opposing drives develop the virtue of purpose, the courage to envision and pursue goals without being unduly inhibited by guilt or fear of punishment." p.210

Erikson's stage four, Industry vs. Inferiority, is the stage where children like feeling accomplished and proud of themselves for completing something. The major question they ask themselves is, "How can be good?" When I was in school I took all our vacation money, even if it was from other countries, and donated it all to an anti-bullying t-shirt contest that I was in. I won the contest! I felt accomplished and proud of myself and I got praise from my family!

Quote:"If children are unable to obtain the praise of others or lack motivation and self-esteem, they may develop a feeling of low self-worth and thus develop a sense of inferiority. This is problematic because during middle childhood, children must learn skills valued in their society." p.276

This is where they find out what they want to identify as in life. When I was a teenager I knew I was a girl and that is what I identified as.

Quote:"Identity forms as young people resolve three major issues: the choice of an occupation, the adoption of values to live by, and the development of a satisfying sexual identity.
Stage 6: Intimacy vs. isolation

Erikson's stage 6, Intimacy vs. isolation, is the stage where people find love, have a committed relationship, and begin a family. If they do not successfully experience the late stage then they will be lonely. I am now 23 years old and have the best and most loving boyfriend I could ever ask for! One day we hope to settle down, get married and have a family of our own!

Quote:"Earlier studies described young women as more competent at intimacy than men and suggested intimacy was more closely related to identity formation for women than men (Fischer, 1981; Hodgson & Fischer, 1979). Moreover, a meta-analysis using data from studies conducted in the 1970s and 1980s showed that identity status and intimacy were associated with each other in both men and women but that the relationship was more robust for men (Arseth et al., 2009)."p337

Erikson's seventh stage, Generativity vs. Stagnation, This is the stage where people finally become a part of society and start contributing towards society. This is when people start getting jobs and help others to become a part of society too. As I am only 23 I have not quite accomplished this yet but, I hope to become a teacher and help the next generation of society.

Quote:"Factors that contribute to homelessness include lack of employment opportunities, stagnation in working class wages, declines in public assistance funds, lack of affordable health care, domestic violence, mental illness, and addiction (National Coalition for the Homeless, 2017)." p.179

As I am 23 I have not experienced this but I hope to look back and feel successful and fulfillment with my life!
