A birth plan is a record of what you would like to happen when you give birth. It will look at your preference of what you would like to happen and not. It also gives your midwife the chance to get to know you better, and understand your feelings and priorities, and allows you to think about or discuss some things more fully with your partner, friends and relatives. As much as the midwife will try hard to accommodate your requests in labour is a good idea to be flexible as sometime facilities such as birthing pools are not always available. Your community midwife will go through your birthing plan with you around 36 weeks pregnant.

Smoking in pregnancy

Stopping smoking altogether in pregnancy is the most important thing you can do to give your baby the best start in life. We know many women cut down, but this is not a safe option, as there is no safe level of smoking in pregnancy. We do know that for some women it can be difficult to quit, however you're not alone, and it's never too late to stop. Protecting yourself and your unborn baby either from actively smoking tobacco (cigarettes or roll up's), or being exposed to passive smoking is vital. Cigarettes contain over 4000 chemicals with the most dangerous being a toxic gas called carbon monoxide. This can damage your placenta and cause serious harm to the development of your unborn baby.
By stopping smoking anytime in pregnancy:
-Reduces the risk of complication in pregnancy and labour
-Reduces the risk of preterm delivery
-Reduces the risk of stillbirth
-Reduces the risk of your baby being underweight when they are born that puts them at increased risk of admission to the Neo-natal unit
-Reduces the risk of SID's (Cot death) once born

There is lots of help that is offered to support you to stop smoking. In Dudley, our HPSS (Healthy Pregnancy Support Service), are a friendly and experienced team who have helped many women to quit smoking in pregnancy. To give you the best chance of quitting, they provide you with weekly behavioural support and access to FREE nicotine replacement therapy, or if you prefer to use a vape, they can discuss this with you too. They work alongside midwives to support you with your journey to stop smoking, either in the community hubs, in the hospital or your home.

You can self refer by
Calling (01384) 244358
or Email dgft.hpss@nhs.net

You don't need to wait until your baby is born to start bonding with them. Your baby can hear from 16 weeks of pregnancy and even earlier meaning talking and stroking your bump helps you and your baby to bond before they are born. This also helps your baby's brain development and starts to form a close and loving relationship between you.

You may feel your baby move from as early as 16 weeks of pregnancy, but most women feel their babies move from around 18-20 weeks. From around 28 weeks pregnant your baby should have a pattern of movement that lets you know your baby is well. It is not true that babies move less towards the end of pregnancy. If there is any change of pattern of movement in your pregnancy- we need to see you in maternity triage.
