The purpose of the Brown v. Board of Education case was to end years of segregation in America's public school system. It not only paved the way for racial integration but also for students with disabilities. It was found that the segregation of schools was harmful to all students but mostly African American students and students with disabilities. In other words, this case was one of the major cornerstones of the civil rights movement and became a foundation for further civil rights actions and changes in education.

After the reauthorization of EHA in 1990, its name was changed to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA).

The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001 is a reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act that was enacted in 1965. The purpose of this act is to provide all children, including students with disabilities, with a fair and equal opportunity to obtain a high-quality education. After years of major consideration, the NCLB act was replaced with the current Every Student Succeeds Act that eliminates many controversies such as taking the focus off of standardized tests and the pressure off of schools for "teaching to the test". On the other hand, schools are still required to report the progress of all students including students with disabilities as was required in the NCLB.
