Santa Clarita vs. Levittown (To What Extent is Santa Clarita a modern-day Levittown?)

Santa Clarita is the third largest city in the Los Angeles County. It has a population of about 200,000 which is massive for a suburban area. And If you watch Netflix, you may probably now know that the city hosts a show called the Santa Clarita Diet! Over the years, Santa Clarita has been growing in culture, population, diversity, etc. Santa Clarita has many features which appeal to the many wants of the population. There are many shopping centers, parks, schools, and restaurants, etc. The racial makeup of the city was 70%, 21% Hispanic or Latino of any race, 9% from other races, 5% Asian, 4% from two or more races, and 2% African American, according to the 2000 census.

In this project, it is seen that Santa Clarita actually closely resembles the old Levittowns. So, firstly the demographic consensus is perfect evidence. Like Levittowns, Santa Clarita housed 70% Whites in 2000. If it were recorded earlier than 2000; like the 70s- than the white demographic was probably close to 100%. On the other hand, in Levittowns there was a no black policy. Levittown was a landmark in the development of suburban housing in the United States. Santa Clarita can definitely be seen as a spiritual successor to the Levittown-ian idea of a perfect suburbia.

"The most perfectly planned community in America," a Levittown article says. Santa Clarita was also a well-planned community as it contains many areas which appeal to the common citizen and consumer. Santa Clarita, for example, has parks like Richard Rioux and Jake Kuredjian, which have many activities to do. Moreover, these parks are very nice and each have their own flair. To each their own "je ne sais quoi." Like in Levittown, both neighborhoods wanted to have places which attracted consumers and allowed them to enjoy the many luxuries they offered. Levittown committed to the plans of having swimming pools, tennis courts, and shopping centers to accommodate their residents. In Santa Clarita, the Valencia Mall is a very popular place to reside, shop, and hangout. It contains many shops, a food court, and an outdoor patio which eventually leads to a cinema theater where you watch new movies and pictures.

Furthermore, Levittown, when it was first conceived, was planned to house sixteen separate "neighborhoods," each bearing distinctive place names like Stonybrook, Lakeside, and Birch Valley. In Santa Clarita, there are also separate neighborhoods, with names like Valencia, Canyon Country, and Newhall, etc. In Levittown, every street name corresponded to what the theme was in the neighborhood. So, in present-day Santa Clarita, for example, in Stevenson Ranch, each residential road is named after very famous authors like Poe and Hemingway. Each section of the different neighborhoods has assigned themes towards the street names in their residential areas.

Neighborhoods like Stevenson Ranch were planned communities, just like Levittown. Houses in these areas all have a similar floor arrangement and even outside plans that are so conforming to each other's design. A little anecdote for example, would be my friend Spencer and his other friend, Parker. When Spencer went to a sleepover at Parker's house, he realized that the house was just an exact reverse model of his own house. Like Levittown, Stevenson Ranch houses were wanted to be mass produced to appeal to the residents as much as they could, and as fast as they could. In effect, many of the houses are somewhat of exact replicas. The most costly houses are the most open. As the square film of each floor arrange goes down, so do the costs. Exactly how Levittown, PA was subdivided into neighborhoods, Santa Clarita, and on a littler scale, Stevenson Ranch are partitioned into spots, for example, Old Orchard, the Arts, the Palisades and Treana Park. As exemplified in the many designs of houses in Stevenson Ranch, they look like Levittown houses due to the fact that they display the semi-curved and cornered, rocket outline of the 50s and the 60s which were inspired by the heightened sense of technology during the times. The rooftops are long pieces that provide a considerable measure of shade. Consequently, the architecture and design of Santa Clarita homes take after that of Levittown.

While Levittown existed in an alternate period of racism, bigotry, and discrimination, its legacy of shabby, yet gracious mass creating homes has left an effective legacy that many still take after, as in Santa Clarita. Both were arranged neighborhoods and communities intended to bolster a huge number of American families. Santa Clarita even has a comparative demography to Levittown (which will definitely diversify more in the future). Santa Clarita can apparently be seen as the advanced Levittown with a couple of contrasts, yet at the same time conveys the Levittown-ian style.
