Ji-Li's family has changed lots of thier customs - redecorated the house, got rid of the house maid to blend in with the rest of soceity. I think that Ji-Li doesn't like the fact that thier house has a new look. At the end of redecorating, Ji-Li thought the house looked plain and colourless. Even though she knew this was good for the family safety, she didn't feel right about it. After they sent away thier house maid, Ji-Li described that her mind wasn't working well, and that she felt like everything was in the wrong order. She even burnt the rice and failed to boil eggs. In school, Ji-Li also changes. She becomes extremly intoverted and is afraid of everyone. I think that the cultural revolution had a huge imact on Ji-Li.

There is a propaganda wall that's used for many purposes; however, during the time of the Cultural Revolution, they put on an image of Chairman Mao. Every morning and night (Morning Repentance, Evening Report), people from the Five Black Categories (landlord, counterrevolutionaries, etc) had to stand in front of the image, bow their heads, and confess their guilt. People of the Black Categories also had to sweep the alley until it was clean; then they would go home. Aunt Xi-wen is part of the Black Categories that has to do all this

Ji-Li witnesses the presentation of a Red Guard leader: Jia Hong-yu. Jia Hong-yu talks about the time where she went off to Beijing to "establish revolutionary ties", despite her mother being ill. One day, the Red Guards set off (somewhere) to see Chairman Mao. Even though it took a while, Jia Hong-yu saw him, and he looked directly in her eyes. At this point, everyone in the audience, as well as Ji-Li, is touched by this story. After the presentation, Ji-Li walks back home. With each step, she prays that Chairman Mao will forgive her for her black "origins" (grandpa was landlord) and let her become a Red Guard.

A group of red guards went to old qian's and asked for a bike. He refused so the red guards started searching. It also might've been because they were suspicious he was a counter revolutionist because his son was executed for being a counter revolutionist. Even though he was an old man, the red guards treated old qian very violently. They kicked him out of his house and took away his walking cane. They screamed at him for talking. His wife tried to tell the red guards to stop but it was no use. It was very hot outside and when his wife tried to give him water, they kicked it. Ji-li jiang was very worried about old qian and how bad it was that he was outside, in the sweltering heat and could not do anything about the red guards taking all his belongings. Though,, she also thought that's what counter revolutionists deserves, especially since it was supporting a just cause. It has been a few hours, and the red guards finally took old qian inside his house but left nothing but his walking stick.

Ji-li Jiang was really sad because she considered An Yi's grandmother to be her own and was really close to her. Though she was deeply hurt, Ji-li Jiang still went to her memorial. An Yi was also close to her grandmother so she must've been sad she'd gone. Ji-li Jiang was also mad at grandmother too because it was believed commiting suicide was part of the counter revolution and that grandmother was not considering her family and her granddaughter and how they'd be affected when she killed herself.

Ji-li Jiang is not that happy, but rather bored. In english class, they aren't learning anything except for political terms. Ji-li Jiang also seems dissapointed because when she was younger, she thought that Junior High would be fun and where you could learn endlessly. Not only English, but all her classes had turned into politics and about Chairman Mao's idea to “combine education with practical experience.” It also seemed like the teachers were very bored and tired of the lessons they had to teach.

It was December and it was very cold. Ji-li Jiang was still bored as they still were learning about Chairman Mao and the Cultural Revolution. Ji-li Jiang was more worried now. Her dad started going to political classes and would sometimes come home very late. As well, her family was falling apart. Her uncle had been detained while being suspected for counterrevolutionary actions and her aunt was detained for having relations to men who did counterrevolutionary actions. As well, her dad had been smoking and she thought that meant he was worried or there was a bigger problem with her family that she didn't know of. Ji-li Jiang knew that unlike school, her dad had been going to political classes because he was being accused of a counterrevolutionary action, but that meant that he had commited a very severe action.
