The sound of my watch made me even more uneasy as seconds were passing by. I ran down the pavement at lightning speed to reach my workplace in the shortest time possible as I was already two hours late for work. However, that seems to be impossible as there was no zebra crossing on the busy road. Cars seem to be limitless as they passed by me one after another. Despite there was a no jaywalking sign on the side of the pavement, the idea of getting a series of admonishing from my manager, incurring his wrath, made me decide to cross the road. Shutting my eyes out of fear, I took a risk and ran to the other side of the road. When I reopened my eyes, all that greeted me was a car coming right at me and the thunderous sound of the horn. The next moment, an excruciating pain seared through my limbs as my blood-soaked clothes became my last sight before my world plunged into darkness. The answer to the question of seeing the sun again became a mystery.

It was a bright Friday morning as the radiant rays of the sun filtered through the chink of my silk curtain. I was tossing and turning, trying to drift back to slumberland until I glanced at my alarm clock to see that it was 9 in the morning. A momentof realisation hit me as I realise that I was going to be late for work. I took a shower and get dressed for work and drove as fast as I can. As I was driving in such treacherous manner, I pictured my boss giving me a dressing down. Thinking of that made me anxious as I stepped on the accelerator harder so that I can drive faster to my workplace. As I was driving, I felt a thud under my car. Knowing that I might get scolded by my boss, I didn't care that much and continued to drive. As I arrived at my workplace, I settled myself in my cubicle until my clerk shockingly showed me his phone. I was also shocked to see that a roadkill cat with a nametag was at the middle of he street. Shocked to see this sight, I went to the outdoor car-park and to find that just now I was too blind to see that my car tyres were covered in crimson red blood and cat hair. I guess this guilt will haunt me forever.

The molten ball of fire flared in the distance as it dipped behind the horizon. I let out a sigh of fatigue as the cacophony of the children’s laughter died down and the road was a pin-drop silence. I dragged my sore feet to a bus station to wait for my bus. After a few minutes later, the bouncing of a ball could be heard within ear shot. I turned to the side to see a young student in a wrinkled uniform walking down the street with his basketball. Suddenly the boy’s ball rolled to the middle of the rough tarmac. He immediately ran like as fast as a peregrine falcon to retrieve his ball. He squatted down to grab the ball when I saw a flare of glaring headlights coming right towards the boy at menacing speed. I immediately screamed at the top of my lungs to signal the boy to get off the road. Frightened, he quickened his pace to get back to the bus stop but Lady Luck decided to desert him that day. Everything happened in a spilt second, the bus driver could not stop in time and a deafening howl of pain could be heard. I took out my phone and called the ambulance with trembling fingers. The ambulance came after a short while later and took the boy away. This traumatic incident would haunt me forever.

There were a plethora of birds chirping happily outside my window. I tossed and turned over my bed and I took a glance at my clock. My eyeballs almost popped out from their sockets as it was already 10am in the morning! An epiphany hit me that I am going to be late for work. Without sparing a single second, I get into my car and press the accelerator surging forward like an angry bull. I overtake cars on the road, hoping to arrive the office earlier. Out of the blue, a flare of glaring headlights blinded me, I could not see anything, I muttered a silent prayer hoping everything will be fine, I press the break with all my might. But my effort was to no avail, I heard a deafening thud and my car was smashed into smithereens, hot acrid white fumes gushed out from my car bonnet making a pandemonium. I could fell excruciating pain seared thought my limbs, I slowly close my eyes and it was sheer darkness. I woke up in the hospital with serious injury, I regrated my actions for negligent driving.

Having just bought a new bicycle for my birthday, I spent that afternoon practicing my stunts. I called my neighbour who is also my best friend to accompany me into a multi-storey car park adjacent to my block of flats. The place was deserted and cars seldom entered and left in the afternoon. My friend, Ali, thought it was safe to try my stunts. Pedalling furiously, we zoomed up the slope. When we reached the top, I spun around on one wheel and zoomed down again. Ali did the same, but much better. Screeching to a stop at the bottom, I made another spin in midair and raced up again to show off to Ali. I was enjoying myself so much that I was drowned in adrenaline which made me ignorant to the drone of an engine on the third floor. I had just reached the top slope again when a shadow fell over me. All I remember was hearing Ali yelling,”watch out!” and the screeching of brakes. Some time elapsed because when I opened my eyes, I found myself staring into the concerned eyes of a stranger. I also found myself lying on the concrete floor of the car park and about 5 metres away from the car. At the time, I did not know that he was a paramedic. I tried to sit up and noticed the maroon car at the top of the slope. Everything came rushing back to me. I asked the man if the driver was all right. I was overwhelmed by a sense of dread when he told me that the elderly driver was so shocked when he saw me that he had a heart attack at the wheel. I guess Ali was so scared that he would get into trouble as he was part of this and he rode his bicycle away in guilt. I grabbed the man’s hand and forced myself to stand up. Everything around me was spinning and I felt a warm liquid trickling out from my nose, but I ignored everything. All I could think of was the old driver. Just then, I saw the paramedics gently move his limp body away from the steering wheel, lift him out of the car and rush towards the ambulance. The driver’s family members kept vigil outside the intensive care unit. I did not dare go near them because I knew they had already spoken to the police and the paramedics. One of them even yelled that I had a flagrant disregard for safety when they saw me walking towards them. Exhausted and overwrought, I left the hospital. I found out later that the driver was in a coma for several weeks before regaining consciousness. To this day, I do not know if he has completely recovered. I feel guilty because of my carelessness. It almost cost someone else’s life. I am just glad that his family members did not press charges against me.

The sun was at the highest point of the cerulean blue sky as it was during midday. Heat waves rose from the rough tarmac, adding to the humidity of the scorching hot day. I was sweating profusely heading my way to Andy’s house by my bicycle, exultant about the upcoming wonderful period. Before reaching, I passed by Tony’s house and invited him to Andy’s house to get our hands on Andy’s game console together. In no time at all, we set off to Andy’s house. We had a marvellous time playing the latest version “Street Fighters” and can’t get our hands off the game console until we heard a deafening thunder struck. It was such a loud and terrible symphony that even the deaf Beethoven would be able to hear it. We were unwilling to stop the game but to start our return journey or we would be caught in rain. Tony and I took our bike and cycled at the speed of lightning. Shortly, it started to rain cats and dogs. We continued our way back as fast as possible. We arrived at the last junction to reach Tony’s house. We took a right turn and did not witnessed a car was speeding towards our direction at a menacing speed. In a fraction of a second, there was a sickening thud of metal hitting flesh and Tony was sent into the air. Everything happened in a split second and the car screeched to a halt. Tony was unconscious and my mind was in a blank. The driver quickly called for the ambulance and informed me to contact Tony’s parents. I ran towards Tony’s house and informed their parents and headed my way back home. I swallowed a lump of guilt in my throat as I did not listen to Tony’s decision to stay back at Andy’s house while waiting the rain stops. Due to my irresponsible act, Tony was severely injured upon the accident.

I'm the type of person who is constantly on their phone, oblivious to their surroundings. I went to park which was a stone's throw away from my house. I pushed my bicycle to the start of the track and started to cycle. I was cycling as the cool breeze hit my face. I could hear the chatter of people around the park. My cellphone began to ring in my pocket as I cycled. I gripped the handle with one hand while reaching for my phone in the pocket with the other. My mother dialed my number.
