Denver is Sethe's youngest child and she plays a key role in the novel. From the get-go, is portrayed as a "victim" of the "spite" at 124, a place that Toni Morrison paints as being "full of a baby's venom" (Morrison 1). Clearly, the "baby's venom" is an early reference to Sethe's murder of Beloved. This moment truly defines Denver's childhood. In the chapter narrated by Denver herself, she states, “I swallowed her (Beloved’s) blood right along with my mother’s milk” (Morrison 242). The aftermath of the event has also defined her life. Her childhood consisted of relative isolation and a lack of social interaction outside of 124. She acts far younger than she is although being portrayed as somewhat intelligent and introspective. Additionally, Denver often feels like an outsider at 124 due to not being present at Sweet Home.

One of Denver's key relationships is with her mother, Sethe. It seems as if Denver’s life is defined by her fear of Sethe. This fear clearly originates out of the incident in which Beloved was murdered. Denver states that Sethe “missed killing my brothers (Howard and Buglar) and they knew it” (Morrison 242). Denver elaborates and even admits that “all the time” she is “afraid the thing” that made Sethe act out in violence “do it again” (Morrison 242). Although Denver fears Sethe, at the end of the book she desperately attempts to help Sethe out of her perilous situation with Beloved controlling her. Beloved attempts to help Sethe escape Beloved's abuse and greatly fears for Sethe's well-being. Another one of Denver's key relationships is her relationship with Paul D. Denver and Paul D exert great animosity towards one another. Furthermore, Denver does not like the sexual relationship that Paul D and Sethe possess and feels that Sethe should be loyal towards her husband, Halle. Denver makes her feelings surrounding him clear by saying she was unhappy about “Paul D in her (Sethe’s) bed” (Morrison 246).

Toni Morrison dedicates a chapter to present Denver's opinions from her own perspective. This passage is nearly essential towards the reader's knowledge of Denver as a character. As previously mentioned, this section opens with insight into her fear of Sethe. Additionally, the section touches on the departure of Howard and Buglar, Denver's relationship with Baby Suggs (who she calls Grandma Suggs), her disdain for Paul D, and finally her anticipation for the arrival of Halle at 124. In the section, Denver perfectly sums up her complex upbringing by stating, "We should all be together. Me, him (Halle) and Beloved. Ma'am (Sethe) could stay or go off with Paul D if she wanted to" (Morrison 246). This passage demonstrates Denver's desire for a more normal lifestyle without all of the craziness she has endured at 124. Denver has the idea that no one at 124 except for Baby Suggs truly does what is best for her and believes that Halle, her father, is an "angel man" that will soon return to 124. This passage demonstrates the trauma she has endured as well as her hope for the future.

As outlined in previous sections, more than anything, Denver fears that Sethe turn crazy again. Denver states that she "loves" her mother, yet she knows "she killed one of her own daughters" (Morrison 242). Growing up, Denver dealt with the neverending fear of living in the house with a murderer, living in a house with someone who nearly murdered her. Not only is this fear clear, but it is undoubtedly rational as well. Over the course of the novel, Denver doubts herself. Due to limited social interaction outside of 124, Denver has very little social skills and self-confidence. She is portrayed as somewhat fragile and as someone who is inclined to spend hours on end by herself. More than anything, Denver dreams of the arrival of her father, Halle. Although she has never met Halle, she was convinced he was both an "angel man" and on his way to 124. In a way, Halle represents the kind of steadfast and uncompromising love that Sethe fails to put forth.

It is with great reason that Toni Morrison is considered one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. Morrison extensively covers the black experience in America in her works such as (I can't figure out how to use italics) Beloved and The Bluest Eye. Most of her works are fictional novels focused on deep themes including racial equality and injustice. Morrison has been greatly recognized for her work including the Pulitzer Prize, the Nobel Prize In Literature, and she has even been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. In 2019, Morrison passed away in New York City. Shortly thereafter, Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am, documentary about Morrison's life and career was released.
