During the story time I encourage them to discuss and answer questions in groups, so that they can learn from more able peers. Another good example of facilitating group work is through Forest School activities. On a weekly basis my teaching assistant and myself take pupils to the outdoor environment and encourage them to work cooperatively when exploring the natural resources and making their own creations. Normally I group the less able pupils with more able peers during Forest School activities. I act myself as a facilitator rather than a teacher. When working together pupils support and learn from each other.

Group work is a great opportunity to develop collaboration among students. An example of group work is a game I sometimes introduce in my classrooms: the hangman. Students are divided into two groups and have to respect some rules to guess the words. I choose a spokesperson and each member of the groups has the chance to suggest a letter. A member of each group has to take note of the mistaken letters and another one to keep the score. So collaboration and sense of responsibility are fostered at the same time.

This gives pupils some more autonomy. Then after a while I let them assess within the group if they are working as a proper team. Individual assessment is done, too, to make every pupil reflect on his reliability and contribution so far.

I totally agree with all what has been said and shown in the videos. As convinced eTwinner I try to practice many of the methods and activities suggested during this course. If we want our student to develop self-organization and coordination skills, the ability to cope with new situations and solve problems that are not easy to foresee , we need as teacher to take a step back and act as counselor and facilitators. During our project students act autonomously with the help of us teacher when and if required. We help managing for ex. the chats or the timing of the different activities to a better general fitting and general coordination of the activities of the groups . By deciding in the groups themes goals work mode timing , tools to be used and outcomes to be aspected, student are given the opportunity to learn to become "equally accountable to each other and to discuss in the group about how and what they are individually doing as a team, to gain common objects which really consist in value creation. They have also to reflect on how to give evidence and to present publicly the tangible results of their creative process

Working with others is what life is all about. It is not easy, but we are constantly exposed to such situations where we are required to cooperate with team members.
Sometimes I facilitate group work in my classes, I probably should do it more. Firstly, I somehow feel that when students are given group work, they perceive it as 'having a chat in a cafe'. Secondly, there is this fear that not all members will invest the same amount of energy and time in the task. Thirdly, I am not quite sure which roles to assign to team members.
However, this webinar made me realize what my role as a teacher should be when it comes to group work. A teacher should be a facilitator, not a controller; a teacher should make students understand that team work and all that it encompasses is crucial not just at school but throughout one's whole life; teachers should teach all the competences that are involved in group work.
This webinar is of great help.

I think that the following strategies are especially effective in teams:

Round Robin Present a category (such as "Names of Mammals") for discussion. Have students take turns going around the group and naming items that fit the category.

Roundtable Present a category (such as words that begin with "b"). Have students take turns writing one word at a time.

Writearound For creative writing or summarization, give a sentence starter (for example: If you give an elephant a cookie, he's going to ask for...). Ask all students in each team to finish that sentence. Then, they pass their paper to the right, read the one they received, and add a sentence to that one. After a few rounds, four great stories or summaries emerge. Give children time to add a conclusion and/or edit their favorite one to share with the class.

Numbered Heads Together Ask students to number off in their teams from one to four. Announce a question and a time limit. Students put their heads together to come up with an answer. Call a number and ask all students with that number to stand and answer the question. Recognize correct responses and elaborate through rich discussions.

Team Jigsaw Assign each student in a team one fourth of a page to read from any text (for example, a social studies text), or one fourth of a topic to investigate or memorize. Each student completes his or her assignment and then teaches the others or helps to put together a team product by contributing a piece of the puzzle.

Tea Party Students form two concentric circles or two lines facing each other. You ask a question (on any content) and students discuss the answer with the student facing them. After one minute, the outside circle or one line moves to the right so that students have new partners. Then pose a second question for them to discuss. Continue with five or more questions. For a little variation, students can write questions on cards to review for a test through this "Tea Party" method.

I prefer making homogeneous groups, and suggesting the roles but I will let them decide how to assign them within the group. So, I can point attention to the groups dynamics. The results are often different from those expected but very interesting. If they assign the roles without problems it works.

I hope that that would motivate them. What can be difficult is how to form the groups. I usually use the jigsaw, sometimes I let them free to choose their team-mates. In language classes I use peers dictations, reading comprehension tasks, asking-and-giving-opinions tasks, making up dialogues etc. I often use lottery or a game to choose the groups or pairs. If students can choose themselves they tend to work with the same students. Lottery or a game makes them more tolerant and accept all classmates. Organising the groups with the guidance of teacher avoids the situation where somebody is left alone .

If they find difficulty I drive them to find a variety of solution inviting them to choose the best for them. Every students has a role according his competence but also his interest. This kind of collaboration sometimes works well, some others less. Any case students feel responsible for the team and they do their best even when they do wrong or they don't succeed.

Are you facilitating group work in your classroom?
I sometimes have used collaborative learning method, but students does not seem to like this kind of activity so much. They complain that there is who works and who doesn't. In fact they're not so used to work in this way. Probably I should follow more their works and prepare more structured materials, at least untill they will feel more confortable with team working.
Obviously the teacher can be a facilitator proposing at the beginning more structured and prepared activities or for example assigning specific roles to pupils. He has also to explain at the beginning the tasks of each role, the rules that one must follow (e.g. what behaviours are good for team working and which are not), the final goals and the assessment criteria.
The teacher should also intervene in case of conflicts that the children are not able to solve. He can mediate and propose solutions or help pupils to understand which is the problem and how to overtake it.
Team working is also a very inclusive didactic method. Because if the teacher chooses well the composition of the groups, pupils can help their weaker mates.
Assessment is important and it is part of the learning process. So a self-assessment grid used by students for evaluating them selves and their mates can be a really good idea.

I use group work to allow students to work together. I always use it in my science lessons. I give the students different roles such as the; leader, reporter, speaker, designer and others. Students are given an investigation task and together they must predict the outcome, solve the investigation and create an experiment to test their hypothesis. They must agree on who will bring the necessary resources. Finally they present their work to others and other groups give them feedback. Then together from the received feedback they evaluate what they could improve. The picture below shows my students during the group work task and their presentations.

Because of the subject I teach (English as a foreign language), collaboration and cooperation is an integral approach in my classes where I am more often a facilitator than a lecturer. Cooperation and collaboration are also very important in my own approach to learning how to teach: I am a very lucky and happy member of a group of teachers in my school that have chosen to work collaboratively to meet the challenges that our digital classes present. Three years ago we started with a pilot project for one class where students and teachers use iPads as pedagogical devices, collaborative platforms for sharing and creating content, non traditional approaches to classroom time activities that include flipped lessons, cooperative learning activities, etc. This year all my five classes are digital ones and I hope it will continue to be so also next year. What I find more challenging for the students is the approach that very naturally has developed lately to work always more for interdisciplinary and interclasses projects, where the groups are formed for common interests, common objectives. Giving roles is fundamental for the necessity of reaching the group objective, so is responsibility for each member's contribution. The real problem we have is the traditional evaluation system: grades rather than competence, testing rather than developing skills continue to worry families, students, teachers too.

The project work was held at school and at a state museum and each group was responsible for a section of the museum. Each group worked on the recovery of the explanatory material content of the pieces of art in the museum. Then they studied the material in different languages and have done their job as a tourist guide in the museum. My role was to encourage, motivate and follow the different groups, leaving even free choice during work. I believe that the supervision and motivation are essential. The girls involved were initially very fearful, and there were also conflicts within the groups, but in the end they have acquired good skills in mutual help and team work. Currently the students who have joined the project last year, do training and supervision of the groups estabilished this year. And they are very good facilitators!
